BoBo Chic

For some weird reason, the pieces from Marc by Marc Jacobs F/W 05 are really really tempting.... :shifty:

...not so much for me kimkhuu...

i still have all of mine from the 80's that he's knocking off...:innocent:...
i could probably make a killing if i sold off some of my archives...

Its untastefully done, i have yet to see 1 single style that i could say looked OK. Its like celebrities cant be bothered to put an outfit together. Its either that or they dont have the personal stylist to help them out:D

stylists really only dress celebs for events...
they dress themselves the rest of the time... ...

a stylist is expensive......and celebrities are cheap...
they're used to getting everything for free...

I don't think the Burberry looks cheap, but definitely the Marc stuff.

Ann Dem was in this thread?

I think there's a certain line though where you just start looking like a slob as opposed to making a statement. if you can walk it and still look good, then more power to you. as for me though, I prefer to combine more polished elements with my vintage and thrift scores.
 same here, lady.

where I live, everyone's so concerned about looking rich, even if you dont have money for your fricking coffin, you should still wear Armani and all that crap. I'm far more interested in looking poor if that makes me any different.

I hate that whole homeless look, I bailed out of that Marc Jacobs look right when he started hinting at old sweaters with holes in it...Umm, no Marc. I just don't like it, although it is good for college students, can be fashionable and spend $20 on a whole outfit.

My friend made this quote "it doesn't match or look good but it was expensive."

Quite frankly, I find this approach and the general attitude behind it offensive. It pisses me right off when multimillionaires like Ashley Olson dress like bag ladies. It's almost like they're making a mockery of poor people. Very like Marie Antoinette pretending to be a milkmaid. Not cute if you've never had to decide between your electric bill or getting some groceries.

i have to disagree with AYLI. it's just a style. i'm not poor. but i'm definitely not rich. styles are styles, fads are fads. things come and go, they repeat themselves, and pretending you're poor is no worse than pretending you are rich (knockoff LVs and the short Uggs that were on sale).

i really like this look; but not for everyday. however, this is coming from a girl who does a completely different look everyday. i have some basic styles to which i gravitate, but i would never bag lady it every day.

... this look is called bobo chic, by the way...

...bobo chic at christian dior fall 2005 ...

can't you just picture mary kate olsen in these oversized, ripped sweaters with baggy cropped trousers, 50 bead necklaces, her balenciaga bag and a pair of birkenstocks??

Homeless-Adjacent

Call it BoBo Chic (Bohemian Bourgeois), call it Dumpster Dressing—whatever it is, Make-Kate and Ashley’s homeless-adjacent street style of piled-on rags has the New York Times atwitter. We reported earlier that the insane get-ups in which stars pretend to go incognito have already inspired a groundbreaking photo shoot in Italian Vogue and, simultaneously and closer to home, a fun promo for the Angeleno line NAQADA. The Times reported yesterday that this hippie-fied style is finally putting Paris Hilton-style logo-mania to bed.

Dumpster Debs
We recently blogged about Mary-Kate and Ashley's BoBo Chic looks, and that the New York Times has heralded the twins' homeless-adjacent look as a refreshing alternative to logo-laden status gear worn by the likes of those other pretty, young, troubled sisters. But we have parsed the key pieces of this funky new look and learned that they, in fact, cost a pretty penny. Mary-Kate’s stressed and torn T-shirts come from Mark and Estel, a company that does the stressing and tearing for you, at $98 a pop. The "eternity" shawl that often surrounds Mary-Kate like so many paparazzo is from Juul, and it runs $160. It all reminds us of Marie Antoinette, who enjoyed "playing" poor.

not for me...vintage is fine and very nice, but paying $98 for an old-looking, ripped up t-shirt is just a bit much. And I like my sweaters without holes in them, thank you.

well I always like this style, i hate that it's so trendy now. it's more ragamuffin or bohemian than hobo for me.

it's been a total [relieving] inspiration to me lately... i wear blue plaid pjs, a fur coat, a tank top, and sunglasses to get groceries...

and when i go to the gym, it's okay to look mussed... in fact, guys seem to thing my bed hair is kind of sexy at school... i haven't combed my hair in two days.. on purpose

Wow! Dude, that is right... dress like youre poor.
I personally pref the Carrie Bradshaw way- where you mix "poor pieces" or goodwill pieces with designer stuff.

I couldn't agree more Plastic'sWife. But I do like the Bobo aka MK&AOlsen way as well. Heck...whatever floats your boat flies my plane. :flower:

I have a bit of trouble understanding people who'd spend 300+ for an outfit to look cheap, are they too freaked out to "afford" going to vintage shops or what?

Maybe they don't like the "hassle" of having to dig through clothing at a vintage shop. You know vintage, thrifting and goodwillin it takes a special kind of shopper. Heck, if I can find a deal on a nice piece i don't care where it comes from...as long as its what I like. :D

one minute everyone wants to look rich, the next everyone wants to look poor.. what's next, middle class?
