CHANELFrom Camilla Morton, in Paris

IN the other half of the Grande Palais, the refurbished venue was still to be marvelled at, yet this time the set was also ready to write a blockbuster in the shape of the Chanel show. As a zeppelin with camera attached flew over the crowds, guests sat down to a weighty book about the installation and ooh la la restoration and - perhaps more excitingly - a parasol in either pistachio or a shade of strawberry shortcake. The pink draped curtains crowned the wide flat grey base that was merely a platform for a 30x50 foot plasma screen and keyboard - a larger than lifesize laptop. This time instead of hitting the keys you could jump and jab you heels on them. The show notes said this was Coco meets James Dean and what a rebel with a cause this combination was going to be. The show started with frantic touch typing on the keyboard, fingers like scurrying mice, and then the electronic rock version of "This town ain't big enough for the both of us" and the Coco v Dean rivalry/frisson began. A floppy black and white Prince of Wales check coat with monotone booties was followed round the rampage by a denim-clad Dean but he was hotly chased by slimfit denims slashed at the knee, denim jacket complete with the house camellia corsage and a girl with an expression of determination. Tweed bomber jackets were zipped up front and classic Chanel frock coats were worn with slimfit pants cut off at the knees - all done in buttery black leather for bike rides after dark. Girls followed by boys, chased by girls, and the pursuit ended as they all stood in formation on the quirky keyboard - every need from A to Z was covered and punctuated. Denim pants were tight and worn with tweed or a dash of evening attire. Classic Delanay-style prints in chiffon billowed over the tight gamine Natalie Wood denim. Yes there were the classic Chanel tweeds but why not in technivision - try yellow with peachy trim or a blushed tweed with biker black underneath or plum tweed with chunky zips and bell sleeves. Cocktail to evening and Coco's spirt still preferred things black and chic. Silver trim on a masculine military style jacket over lace cropped shorts and best of all , a black tux complete with ruffled satin shirt was a slimfit Le Smoking avec le slim shorts. The lacy crochet section in black and white and the Eighties electronic Weird Science style lesson continued as black chiffon and stripes stood to attention. A bronze sequinned corsage, pinned on a black top, was teamed with a bronze sequinned skirt made up of more camellias. Carman Kass looked girly in a black ruffle chiffon dress, Maria Carla like a doll in a black dress with white sequinned fan bodice and Gemma Ward was angelic in the off-white finale - a chiffon dress, camellia at her heart and on the hem. Then all the assembled letters needed only one man to come and make the jumble into the prose that is Coco meets James Dean. (October 7 2005, AM)
