Daniel Lee - Designer, Creative Director of Burberry

I agree on everything.

I'm happy you think it's very bad, considering you joined here 2023 and I 2004 haha.
I'm a bitter old baitch and I love it.

Either way, as you mentioned, he's saying nothing new, so just don't say it.

I think he's just rolling with the executive punches, as he should.

What do you think about a whole collection of only it/hit objects?
It would likely not hang together but I'd be morbidly curious. I think it would end up being inadvertent bad camp, like a reverse Jeremy Scott.

(I only joined recently but I'm 32 haha ... I'm newish to fashion, having been secretly interested for years but put off by nothing fitting me personally due to a weird body type, and bad design lessons at school, still learning my history and loving it).

But Jeremy Scott was super viral.

I'm happy you joined!

I'm super into fashion since the late nineties, and studied fashion design and do create, but don't invest in high fashion and don't see most of it in person, but I still have a very strong opinion!

Daniel Lee’s Burberry turnaround vision dashed by analysts

Published: 22:04 03 Oct 2023 / Written by: William Farrington

Daniel Lee’s appointment as Burberry Group PLC (LSE:BRBY)’s chief creative officer in September 2022 came with high hopes of a turnaround for an iconic British fashion brand struggling with lagging top-line growth and industry-wide headwinds.

Not unique to Burberry, reduced China demand, labour shortages and cost-of-living pressures were all sources of concern for Burberry that Lee had to contend with.

However, UBS analysts today poured cold water on Lee’s performance to date, noting that “the increasingly challenging sector context, combined with so far muted reaction of the trade and consumer to the new brand aesthetics, means that the turnaround may have to be more costly to succeed”.

“Our discussions with selected wholesalers suggest its price point is too high for the targeted consumer, thus driving a reduction in orders year on year, while some of the social media trends also don't suggest any ‘hype' among the consumers,” UBS stated

Yikes....that must be a hit to the ego....

I am not the biggest fan of what he's done so far but I do enjoy his point of view and how unique it is in a sea of brands that mesh together. The prices however are just not realistic at all for Burberry. Even with the recent inflation price increases, it just doesn't merit that luxury type of pricing. No one is paying full price for a $1000 MensT-shirt when you can just spend that money at Dior or Versace for a bit more "clout". They shoud've gone the contemporary route if they wanted more success.

I mean, technically, he can’t do anything about it. The pricing is a decision made by the suits. I like his Burberry and I really think that it has the potential to work but Jonathan Akeroyd needs to have his reality check. They can re-adjust the pricing for the resort but FW2023 will end up on sales starting at 50% off or straight to the outlets.

i checked out the collection in store and quite liked the duck print trousers with zip details however the price comes up to more than 4000$ which is quite ridiculous. i have camo trousers from tisci's burberry from yoox and i think im happy to keep wearing these instead :D Maybe they are just preparing lees burberry to be sold at their outlet stores since most of their business happen there.

They should have launched with the Resort collection instead. It's much more commercial and appealing than the Autumn Winter show which was quite challenging in terms of appeal.

The price of the clothes at the moment is ridiculous.

What are the prices? I cant waste my time entering the Burberry store. Embarrassing lol

If this is true then it must be pretty bad because that's not uncommon in the industry but wasn't there a video where after a show he was talking about the collection and he was very "up"?
Yeah, and in that same video, the nose was “itchy”

Pricing as high as the creative director. If the pricing was around ⅓ of what they're demanding, then it'd feel more reasonable for their range.

Akeroyd needs to realise that for Burberry to charge such prices, they need to be perceived as one of three things:
• a couture/artisanal house (like Bottega)
• a force of creativity (like Margiela)
• a cultural powerhouse (like Louis Vuitton)
Burberry is perceived as a brand that makes semi-accessible trench coats and check caps for 90s hypebeasts and hooligans.

Burberry needs to get their core products and brand identity firmly in places before even attempting to selling five-digit viscose dresses.
