It's quite easy to get a really beautiful cummerbund in either satin, silk or cotton. You can get them almost everywhere and they're not expensive.
For a less formal look, I often wear mine with black jeans and a shirt, or with black trousers and a t-shirt. If you want a less formal look for everyday outfits, I would definitely go with an unshiny cotton cummerbund or a leather one and save the satin cummerbund for evening wear. I think the autumn/winter collection is much more wearable than people give it credit for - it's just a question of mixing the items properly for everyday wear. You can easily look casually formal without looking like you're going to the opera.
