Q&A

Dita Von Teese

Interview by Rosanna Greenstreet
Saturday November 4, 2006

The Guardian

Dita Von Teese, 34, grew up in Michigan and then California, and was named Heather Sweet. Her love of 1940s glamour began as a child and she went on to collect clothes from the 1920s through to the 1950s and to dress in vintage from head to toe. Her first job was in a lingerie shop, and she also worked as a go-go dancer on the LA club scene and in a strip club. She began to glamour model in 1991 and soon gained worldwide attention for popularising retro style and vintage eroticism. Her career in burlesque began in 1993 when she performed her tribute to Sally Rand's feather-fan dance at one of the biggest fetish events in the US. Married to the rock musician Marilyn Manson, Von Teese lives in Hollywood. She is performing at Erotica 2006, which runs from November 17-19 at London Olympia.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

Having beautiful and memorable life experiences.

What is your greatest fear?

The sudden loss of a loved one.

What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?

I'm terrible with names.

What is your most treasured possession?

The diamond ring my husband gave me when he proposed.

Where would you like to live?

Paris. To me, it's the most beautiful city in the world, so full of history and marvellous things to see.

What makes you depressed?

Not any one thing in particular. Some days are just bad days, that's all. You have to experience sadness to know happiness, and I remind myself that not every day is going to be a good day, that's just the way it is!

What do you most dislike about your appearance?

I make a point to never, ever point out my physical flaws ... this is advice I give to women as often as I can. People don't notice the things we see in ourselves that we hate, so why direct them to it? Living with your flaws doesn't mean you should tell people about them.

What is your most unappealing habit?

I fuss with my hair a lot.

What is your favourite word?

Jackass.

What is your favourite book?

La Parisienne, a rare and beautiful book that my friend the corsetiere Mr Pearl gave me. It's full of antique snapshots and portraits of women in the 1860s wearing the most divine and decadent clothes and hats.

Radiator or air conditioning?

Radiator. I hate to be cold.

Cat or dog?

Both. I have two Dachshunds and four Devonshire Rex cats.

Is it better to give or to receive?

I enjoy both! Anyone who says they don't like to receive a gift is lying.

What is your guiltiest pleasure?

I occasionally wear fur.

What do you owe your parents?

Thanks to my mother, people tell me I look younger than I am, especially without make-up. And I suppose my father had a part in making me more frugal with my money.

What or who is the greatest love of your life?

My husband.

Have you ever said 'I love you' and not meant it?

Of course.

Who would play you in a movie of your life?

Someone who isn't shy about being nude.

Which words or phrases do you most overuse?

'Thank you, I'm glad you liked it.' This phrase is always said after I've done a show when I'm mingling, and sometimes, just to mix it up, I'll say, 'I'm glad you liked it, thank you'!

When did you last cry, and why?

I cried recently when I went to the ballet. I become emotional when I experience wonderful live performances.

How often do you have sex?

As often as possible. Sometimes several times a day, sometimes not for weeks.

Have you ever had a same-sex experience?

Yes, I had several experiences before I was married, and at 20 I even had a serious relationship with a beautiful girl.

What song would you like played at your funeral?

I hadn't really considered that ... I must have been too busy figuring out which outfit to be buried in!

How would you like to be remembered?

For being a great showgirl.

What is the most important lesson life has taught you?

Never to worry about people's opinions. We all have different ideas about what we think is entertaining, or what beauty or talent is. So why bother trying to please other people? It's impossible, so learning to accept criticism, and understanding what it means when people give it, has been the most valuable lesson.

2006: THE YEAR IN FASHION

Bump & Grind
Dita Von Teese, the burlesque pinup and fetish-cheesecake artist with the porcelain skin and scarlet moue, had more exposure than ever this year. What was the tip-off that she had truly arrived? Was it the Vogue story on her nuptials to goth rocker Marilyn Manson ("The Bride Wore Purple")? The M.A.C. Viva Glam ads? The zillion performances, from Posh and Becks' pre-World Cup party to Art Basel Miami? No, no, and no. It was her front-row seat at the Marc Jacobs spring show.

That white dress is Rodarte i think. She's so put together all the time. Jeez i wish all the celebrities were like that. Even though she's a strip-tease artist you never see her crotch hanging out.

Dita Von Teese, Salma Hayek

14: DOLCE & GABBANA HONORS SALMA HAYEK

Dolce & Gabbana honored Salma Hayek and her foundation for the work she does with Mexican women affected by domestic violence. The setting was the historic Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel and its newly renovated Gable & Lombard penthouse suite (named after the screen legends who trysted there). “It’s very exciting for me to see this eclectic group of people getting to know each other,” Hayek enthused. The A-list guest list included Jane Fonda, Molly Sims, Maria Bello, Ginnifer Goodwin, Bill Paxton, Christina Milian, Mischa Barton, Lake Bell, Eva Longoria, Tony Parker, Nicole Richie Serena Williams, Monet Mazur, Matt Dillon, Dita Von Teese and Bridget Moynahan.

Did anyone in the UK see the Faking It Burlesque that has been running these past couple of days? I saw it last night and there is a bit with Dita in it. She sounds somehow different than I would think that she would. She looked great though. I like her Q&A.
