Dries Van Noten S/S 08 Paris

this is eccentrically beautiful. it reminds me of east africa

The accessories are amazing except for the chunky necklaces. Love the shoes and cuffs.

dries van noten's accessories always appeals to me.
and the drape-looking dresses are so gorgeous, very exotic yet very western.

The styling is awful, but some of the pieces would look nice individually.

This is above and beyond styling, imo. Each look is like a exquisitely lush little painting. If you look at them compositionally (almost like a work of art, as Melisande said), they really work perfectly.

I think this collection really demonstrates the depth of Dries' talent; and his understanding of the diverse cultures and places that influence him. He's not just a tourist who picks up random "ethnic" inspirations and crashes them all together without any understanding of local aesthetics. :innocent:

He's more like a poet traveler, at home throughout the world.

Speaking of travelers....

I love this look with the back pack so much...makes me want to set off on a trip.

my favorite collection by far! love the mix prints used with a ferocity. so fresh without being cluttered.

darn, i was expecting so much from this collection :( it's not awful but i'm starting to hate prints (the more i see this season, the more i despise them :D); some of the pieces are brilliant, i love the jackets and i think the styling was actually pretty amazing. probably have to give myself the time to digest the whole thing, and maybe then i can appreciate it for all that dries is worth

I can't stop coming back to look at this collection! Thanks for posting the detail pics. :crush:

and the shoes...

I love this collection, amazing! Refreshingly fun
vibrant, energetic and so beatiful

I think i can safely say now that this was one of the best ss08 collections .

laika, that is such a lovely way of looking at this collection and the man himself. thanks for sharing...

Dries' ability with colour never ceases to amaze me, it is such a difficult element to bring together as nicely as he does. Wonderful.

:flower:

on a professional level...it's fine...
nice prints....classic artful mixing..all the dries shapes we have come to expect...
it's really a signature dries collection...
*which is good timing...since a good many customers are new to dries in the past 2-3 seasons and this will give them an overview of what the label is really all about...

but on a personal level...it's really not for me...
i've seen most of this before and the colours/prints are not for me...
just not bowled over by any of it...
gonna be skipping this season of dries it seems...

trekked into the city on friday, spent the entire day laughing, shopping and getting to know a new friend; it was light-hearted, silly fun, a kind of girlish day when you forget to eat; boy, do guys miss out on this good stuff...it occurred to me that girl friendships have similarities to Dries' spring collection in that they both have a juxtaposition and compliment to them that brings out the best of both sides.

his collection was very "islandy" with tropical, fine, bright silks accented by natural stones and oblong glass beads. it was easy to get lost in so much going on, and in a way, a bit of a needle in a haystack trying to find colors that worked for me and patterns that I liked together. fortunately I was able to find some color combos that were more subtle, broody and connected in a nest of bright and somthimes reckless ones. you really had to know what colors and shapes looked good on you or you risked looking like you had your grandmother's lounge-wear on. this collection seemed to attract an older clientele then I would imagine the last two seasons did.

I loved most of the cuts of the dresses but often the patterns got in the way. I did find a very cool light knit sweater that had balloon sleeves and drooped in the front below the chest then gathered in a ruched square of fabric. the sweater had colors you would find in a Vermeer painting, with the same sunlit glow, I absolutely fell in love with it. also a hunter green silk crewneck with rectangles of printed fabric arranged like a necklace. lastly, this really incredible delicate white v-neck sleeveless tunic with a drop waist that had a simple pattern up top but bold, big flowers in aubergine, teal, and black sandy browns below. all in all this Dries collection was a real mix and most likely has something for everyone but can easily go wrong if overdone. as usual the beading and adornments are something to behold. I'll be curious to see how other stores interpret it.

I wasn't wooed by the shoes but that always happens until I see them IRL.

well, i'm so happy with this collection. it was what i've been looking for the spring-summer season. it's rather interesting that everyone notices the prints and patterns, I love them too. but what i'm thinking of is that these patterns are not really so important. the thing is in the way he mixes them, it's about his creativity and ability to actually do it, not looking too heavy or cheap. the styling was outrageous. each single look was so completed yet not overdone. it was like a big big story of... journeys? different cultures? i don't know. it leaves me questions, and that, I think, is the most important thing for a fashion designer, not just to tell a story or make a statement, but to make a viewer/customer react (or interact if you want) to what he shows.
what i saw was an excellent collection, extremely traditional (in a way of staying true to the roots, to the inspiration) and amazingly modern at the same time . it felt fresh and bright but not in a vulgar or some flirty way. it was very young, but as lanvin's collection, it did suited any age. it's intelligent, yet he made his clothes play. what more can we ask for summer?
the impression i can't get away with is was a funny mixture of pucci and marni put alltogether. and i can't get enough of that sparkling dress seen on alana. it totally shot me down.
thank you, dries!

This collection looks like it would FEEL amazing!
I'm in love with the bold stones in the accessories.

Lucky - sounds like you found some gems!

thanks Curious, I think I did well based on what works for me, that's the key to this collection. I had some very talented help sorting it out. :innocent:

the Dries rep said that he is going to start making jewelry.

^ Great post, Lucky...! So glad to hear about your lovely day!

Dries' strength is in his ability to cater to women of all ages, I think. There is always something for women of all ages to covet. This collection will be rather tricky for customers who aren't in tune with what suits their coloring and personal style. Will definitely take keen discrimination to weed out the beautiful yet unnecessary pieces.

A jewelry line...?!? :buzz::wub:

i think that is a really good observation ...
totally agree with that..

and i agree that it's a very modern collection in terms of the shapes and silhouettes...
really appealing styles that seem like they would suit a variety of women...

*just not me...
:innocent:

if only he would do some of it in solids or more muted tones mixed with the vibrant ones...
:ninja:

one of my fav SS collections, and i so hope i get my hands on one of those amazing printed pumps!!

I'm SO in LOVE LOVE LOVE with the silk pants... I touched them in the shop the other day, but did not dare to try them on... Was afraid to love them even more... They are way over my budget, taken to consideration how little wear I could actually get out of them here in Denmark :(
