Ellen von Unwerth - Photographer

thanks for the link bleufunk! there actually was a thread already so i merged:flower:

the sexuality is a bit too gratuitous and overt for me . . . I prefer it to be a bit more subtle for the most part . . . the ones I am drawn to are the ones that don't have bared breasts, legs spread etc.

Ellen von Unwerth is a Teutonic who is fond of flash, and grainy film.

She is like a neo-Helmut Newton with less of the aesthetic.

I definitely see a Newton influence in much of her work, but i personally prefer her to Newton. I find Newton to often be misogynistic in his works. Whereas Ellen, in my eyes, maintains a subtle feminine quality at all times. It's both blunt and coy at the same time, which i think is a tricky balance. There is a playfulness in them.

That being said, i tend to prefer her vibriant color images, which are more unique to her. Like the Bebe ads she's done. I think those are a bit more original as well.

Has anyone looked at her books? I've been debating on buying one of them for years..especially the one that features Adriana Lima.

Thanks for the link BleuFunk.I have been looking for the Adriana and James Kind editorial for years.

I love her work.

She is amazing photographer

i'm not sure if i like how contrast-y her images are... i think it looks better in the black and whites than in the color images in this last editorial but I'm pretty much on the fence about it... thanks for the pics IlvMags :flower:

i desperately want her wendybird video for Erin Fetherston!!!!!!!!!

anyone lucky enough to have seen it?

Hugh Grant was talking about how much he liked Ellen's work. I was wondering if you guys know whether Liz Hurley ever modelled for her? That would be a cute reason for liking her.

You think Newtons portrayal of women is often misogynistic ? I must say thats not something I associate his work with. While I think Newton doesn't portray a great variety of "types" of women.. I find in many of his photos an admiration for strong amazonian women

^yes but it's a male projection of an amazonian woman, maybe misogynistic is the wrong word but i have never been comfortable with his work. i know a lot of people will deem me humour-less for saying so and he definitely was a very talented photographer but his idea and exploitation of the theme 'woman' leaves me cold if it doesn't annoy me.

Yes, I think that's it.. it's not misogynistic, but a very confrontational depiction of women.. they seem rather like fictive characters...Newtons fantasy

I just browsed through the Newton thread on here, just to see if i was being a bit hasty. It didn't change my mind. I find much of his work misogynistic.

This thread isn't about him, but in comparison to Newton i find humor and playfulness in Unwerth's photography, whereas in the same type of photography with Newton, i see coldness and sterility. Not that there isn't beauty there, but it isn't beauty that i find pleasing.

i can relate to what you're saying, bleufunk.
and von unwerth's work is definitely more playful, only i find her images very contrived, too ... but they don't offend me.

I think Ellen Von Unwerth is the greatest working photographer alive!

She has a unique ability to bring out the "wild child" in all her subjects.

She has a great eye for true beauty, and she is not afraid to express fun and sexuality in her work.

She is a true professional, and her original editorials always have something new to say!

I too prefer Ellen to Newton, mostly because her photos are just more aesthetic in my eyes. But both seem to be more often... somewhat sensitive conceptual artists. While composition is most important for me, because I'm just too dumb to sit around and think about how a woman is being portrayed. I have Newton's "Sex and Landscapes" book, and I just find that his landscapes are more beautifully photographed.

I understand what you guys are saying about Newton's fantasy image of women. But I see Ellen's fantasy women too. Maybe a lot of photographers do this. I don't really see anything wrong with it. It's art, make-believe. The difference between them I think though, is that Ellen's photographs are more alive.
