Fiona Apple

^^ yes paper bag is a well known pro ana song .. if you listen to the lyrics .. alot of girls listen to it for inspiratio. I just said I liked ugly girl (an other one of her songs) and paper bag :flower:

i never interpreted the lyrics of "paper bag" (one of my most favorite songs ever) as pro-ana...
"Hunger hurts, and I want him so bad, oh it kills
Cuz I know Im a mess he dont wanna clean up
I got to fold cuz these hands are too shaky to hold
-hunger hurts, but starving works, when it costs too much to love"

"hunger" and "starving" are metaphors pertaining to love! or at least that's what i always thought.

Paper Bag is definately a song which has to do with eating disorders. She was anorexic herself, so it's only logic. At least to me it has that special meaning, but everyone should interpret the lyrics their own way :)

Oh, i see. I didn't get what "pro ana" meant. I think it's a stretch to say "paper bag" is about eating disorders, but i wouldn't take anyones meaning from them. She's definitely had those issues in the past.

^^ i never said point black it was i just said alot of girls use it as a pro ana song :) not being ana i cant really understand the mentality but yea :) :flower:

btw: by "ugly girl" i assume you mean "sullen girl"?

nope two different songs darling :flower:

Days like this, I dont know what to do with myself.
All day - and all night.
I wander the halls along the walls and under my breath.
I say to myself.
I need fuel - to take flight -

And theres too much going on.
But its calm under the waves, in the blue of my oblivion.
Under the waves in the blue of my oblivion.

Is that why they call me a sullen girl - sullen girl.
The dont know I used to sail the deep and tranquil sea.
But he washed me shore and he took my pearl -
And left an empty shell of me.

And theres too much going on.
But its calm under the waves, in the blue of my oblivion.
Under the waves in the blue of my oblivion.
Under the waves in the blue of my oblivion.
Its calm under the waves in the blue of my oblivion.

sullen girl ^^^

ugly girl .. i dont recall being on her album ... think it was a b side

When I saw you at the grocery store
You were sharin a shopping cart with her
And I couldnt turn and run away
I didnt know what to say
You introduced us for the first time
And I had to look her in the eye
But you could not have imagined my surprise
Cant you see?
Youre leaving me
For an ugly girl
Does she talk about politics?
And all that stuff that used to makes me sick
Does she smoke cigars and stay up late
Oh shes so great
Does she tell you what you want to here?
And I bet she could grow a beard
I feel better thinking you were queer
Its not fair
I cant compare
To an ugly girl
To an ugly girl
Lalalalalala lalalalalalala lalalalalalalala
Lalalalalalala
Lalalalalalalala
Lalalalalala hhahah
Hahaha the jokes on me
I feel jealous and I feel mean
Shes so nice
That it makes up for her face
Theres no way, do you have to keep your eyes closed
Do you have to keep the lights down low?
Oh I bet you wish you had a blind fold
CAN

The Rolling Stone interview I read with her (years ago) did reveal that she did go through anorexia. But, I highly disagree with the idea that Paper Bag is in support of anorexia. Paper Bag is one of my favorite fiona songs and I've listened to this song (and related to it) enough to know that it's about love. To be specific, it's a song about false hope, realizing that the guy you like isn't willing to deal with your problems and that he's nothing but a fool. No matter how much you hope and wish, the only way to break away from that hunger for love is to keep him away... because "it's cost too much to love."

The use of words may have come from her anorexia, but I don't see how just taking that one line to say that it's "pro-ana." :)

i absolutely agree with you lovemyboots! it is clearly about love :)
and tiamaria, thank for directing me to "ugly girl"...i didn't even know that song existed! i'm d/ling it now :flower:

i just finished listening to "ugly girl" and it doesn't sound like fiona at all! i never would've guessed it without your reference and a "tidal" b-sides thing i found! it must've been some sort of joke or experiment during the "tidal" recording sessions, with fiona singing with a different voice, or maybe the recording engineers sped up her recording so her voice would sound higher pitched. truly! one way or the other, i find no pro-ana statements in the lyrics to the song. she doesn't even say "you're leaving me for a fat girl" or something along those lines, but "ugly girl" and said girl could be "ugly" but skinny! i'm aware some years ago fiona had an eating disorder, but she doesn't reflect it in her lyrics. i guess people selectively read things into her songs

**eating disorder/weight talk is against tfs guidelines so please refrain from talking about it in this thread**

regarding "ugly girl"
it's not a fiona apple song... it's by fleming & john on the album "the way we are"....

^^ oh right i always thort it was some werid cover by her because .. it shows up on loads of lyric sites as being by her ... and same on limewire as well ... werid maybe some one has got their wires crossed and then misinformed loads of people. Werid ... god i hate the internet sometimes :(

Has anyone else seen the iconoclast episode (show that aims to capture celebrities "through the eyes of the creative visionaries who respect and admire them the most.") with Quentin Tarantino and Fiona Apple? It was really interesting I thought. He said that Extraordinary Machine was one of the rare albums he became obsessed with, and had to listen to at least once a day, for however long... It was also quite surreal to see him singing along backstage to all her songs :p
