Foreign Movie Recommendations

love me if you dare - its French and beautiful
Manual of love - Italian and lovely too

sorry if those have been mentioned

Funny Games

Has anyone seen this Austrian film? I saw it last night & can't get it out of my head... Apparently they are re-making it with Tim Roth & Naomi Watts... I am disturbed! It was fantastic!

 :ninja:  :woot:

Try getting The Piano Teacher (La Pianiste) out of your head... :ninja:
Haneke films always linger..
I'm curious to see the remake... I can't think of another case of a director remaking his own film, and I'm sure he isn't so starved of money that he would bring out a Hollywood version that would taint its predecessor.

I love the original -- Haneke is one of my favorite directors; I've seen all of his movies! But I have no idea why he wanted to remake Funny Games ... I read somewhere it's even a shot-by-shot remake. Weird.

I haven't seen it B. What is it about?

I don't know if I could explain it without ruining the storyline... My friend who is a film-maker said you can either look at it as a psychological thriller, or as a slight parody of the genre... Either way it'll stick around in your mind for a while...

I can't imagine why he would want to re-make it either, unless he just wants to show it to a more mainstream audience...? Especially if it's shot-for-shot, he's not even adding anything different to the mix. I'm not sure, I'll wait to see it before I judge.

I'm going to merge this thread with the Foreign Films thread :flower:

Thanks, Sounds interesting! I will have to check this one out soon, Thanks for merging as well.

Le Temps du loup

by Michael Haneke

just finished it.
its so real .
i love it.

i recently saw the french movie la tourneuse de pages (the page turner).

i guess it could be considered a psychological thriller...
it's about a girl who was brillaint on the piano, until a woman ruins an important audition of hers...
the girl then grows up and it's obvious that nothing ever came out of her talent...
the movie is then about this revenge that she tries to carry out on this woman's family...

I saw Le Scaphandre et le papillon yesterday, also known as The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, and it was stunning. It was brilliant. I really fell in love with the cinematography.

I remember reading a recent interview with him somewhere and if I'm not mistaken he is re-making the movie because he thinks the theme of violence is still very urgent nowadays (or it was something along that line)

I've basically seen ALL Haneke movies of the past 10 years and I think he's absolutely a genius director. Still, I'd say Funny Games is his masterpiece...it's just a movie I will never be able to forget. I'm holding my heart for the remake...I'm curious even though I think it's almost impossible to make this version better in any sense than the original. We'll have to wait and see.

A great German movie I've seen last week is Requiem, directed by Hans-Christian Schmid. Short plot line from IMDB
An epileptic girl suffers a breakdown during her first year at university, then decides to seek help from a priest in battling the troubles associated with her strict upbringing.

i've heard that this is supposed to be one of the best movies of the year..
am definitely curious to see it..

em that movie sounds interesting as well..
i'm going to look it up right now

Thanks for the recommendations on Funny Games - I'm intrigued. :P
I haven't had any time to watch any movies in the last couple of months at least not any good ones since I want to watch them in one part without having anything else to worry about, and I just haven't had that much amount of time on my hands lately. That's all going to change in 2008 though. At least in the beginning. ^_^

Anyway just wanted to say that all of your recommendations are appreciated :flower:

I can only think of one director that has done this: Alfred Hitchcock.
