I think people are shocked by it because it is quite rare for someone not of upper-birth, who has no noted accomplishments, to be such a 'star' of the scene. There are dozens of not-so-wealthy girls out there, but the fact that Genevieve was at the top at one point, and still remains in the A-circle is quite amazing. The New York social scene is not exactly known for its acceptance of outsiders of any kind. I say kudos to her for breaking into it, if its what she wants...

It seems as if it's becoming more the norm though. Lots of the new girls on the social scene have no real pedigree: Lydia Fenet, Laird Roach, Olivia Palermo, Sylvana Soto Ward, etc. They just have the "right" jobs (ie PR, fashion, etc) or they have the money to hire PR. It seems that Genevieve went neither of those routes to break into the scene, so it is pretty amazing that she succeeded. I think any girl with a carefully laid out plan can break into society.

i've chated with her a few times and she was really nice me, i didn't detect the slightest bit of arrogance from her. she's a sweet girl
