(NEW YORK) Tinsley Mortimer isn’t the only stylish PYT aiming to leave her mark in the world of fashion. Genevieve Jones has created her own eponymous capsule collection of jewelry, inspired by her travels with an emphasis on nature. “It tells a story, like a poem, because each piece is related to the next,” Jones said of the initial 13 pieces, which include earrings, bracelets, rings, and one necklace—all fashioned in a combination of 18-karat gold, diamonds, and semi-precious stones ranging from amethyst and topaz to garnets and emeralds. The collection was conceived of and produced with an artisan in Thailand, where Jones recently spent a considerable amount of time. “I’ve always been creative, making things for myself,” she rationalized. “I thought it was a great time for me to do something like this. Sometimes it’s good not to think too hard; otherwise, you can think yourself out of ideas. Basically, I was tired of talking about things I wanted to do.” The collection, which is still in its initial stages—Jones has yet to show the line to retailers—features intrinsic details that she hopes, her bold-faced status aside, will set her line apart from others. Bracelets, for instance, feature the ripple of a snake vertebrae or the spiky tail of a stingray; shell rings are fashioned in 18-karat gold and diamonds. Price points have yet to be finalized, but Jones likens them to be on par with the realm of fine jewelry.
Meanwhile, Jones’ friend, Julia Restoin-Roitfeld, an art director at Baron + Baron, created the square logo that will be discreetly laser-etched onto the pieces. “It’s a G and J mirroring each other four times and upside down,” Jones described. “It has an Asian look to it.” As for her own personal inspiration, Jones said that she’s always admired Cartier’s Indian-inspired collections as well as Diane von Furstenberg’s personal jewelry style. But her travels to destinations like New Mexico and Utah played an influential factor in the design as well. “The ocean and desert are my two favorite extreme destinations,” she said.
During her time in Thailand, Jones also created a collection of handbags made from stingray, python, and snakeskin—though for now, she’s content to just let her friends show them off. “I treated this collection like an art installation,” she emphasized. “This isn’t me re-casting my grandmother’s rings. They’re original and unique and look good on. They’re not too rare to wear.”
