Gucci To Start Couture Line - Gucci Première

Unless they fried Frida, or find someone else to be the director of HC, otherwise, dont u even join the couture week , pls !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

^tom could care less. i'm sure he's more concerned about locking up an oscar nomination for his film.

And here it is; the first ever Gucci Couture dress :flower:.

Although Gucci declined comment back in January when rumor went around that Frida Giannini was working on a debut couture collection for the brand, it appears the rumors were true. The brand sent out a release today announcing that the dress Salma Hayek wore to the Robin Hood premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, at left, is the "very first" couture gown from the Gucci Premiere collection designed by Giannini.

The dress was described in the statement as a "floor length bordeaux silk georgette one shoulder gown with hip, back and shoulder drape detail [which] also features deep red crystal embroidery at the shoulder and waist." Hayek was accompanied on the red carpet by her husband, Francois-Henri Pinault, CEO of PPR, which owns Gucci. Back when the rumors of the Gucci couture collection went around, there were no plans to show it on the runway. Instead, it was said it would be sold by appointment and used to dress top celebrities for big red carpet occasions.

I don't mind the dress, but if I hadn't been told who it was by I never would have guessed Gucci... I don't really see the point in paying 'couture' prices for something if no one can place who made it...

At least with an Atelier Versace number you can always tell its a Versace

She looks gorgeous but the dress is absolutely nothing special or different...

it's a pretty dress. but i agree with squizree and irresistable_loz. it looks 'unrecognizable' unlike a dior or chanel. instant recognition. but then again, that could be the gucci thing. to 'whisper'. but then again, let's be honest. it's gucci. what part of gucci 'whispers'?? :P

which part from that dress that can be seen as couture? im confused

It does not look very couture if you ask me!
Sure it's a wonderful dress, but you can find tons on them in every Elie Saab RTW runway shows...I don't the couture vibe coming from it

That's not the point of couture at all.
The people who can afford couture are not looking for a brand shoot-out.

The dress is beautifully cut and very flattering on Salma's body. It would be interesting to see the internal structure of the dress as 70% of Couture's appeal is comfort and that's determined by what's going on beneath the fabric.

However, I will agree with everyone that the design is sub-part. It does look like an off-the-rack dress. Off the rack of Harrods, of course, but still...

It doesn't look like Gucci. It doesn't look like couture either, for that matter.

The tucks are very delicate, but otherwise it's a standard dress.
What's the point in Gucci bringing out a couture line?

oh Gucci

oh Frida

No

and seriously, WHAT celebs who wear designer clothes to BIG RED CARPET EVENTS ever PAY for the dresses?

from all the brands PPR has to offer, Selma had to be dressed in Gucci.

and not even the good F/W 10/11 stuff!

I think in terms of craft, this Couture of Gucci's might not be as spectacular as something like Atelier Versace. Gucci is symbolic of fast fashion and having products that are mass-produced and generally lower in quality than say, something at Givenchy or Balenciaga.

i don't think that was always true. nowadays, well, most likely yes.

but not in the good ol days (also known as Tom-days )

Also, I think people are focusing too much on the description of this line as 'haute couture'. It is not couture in construction or techniques. The only similarity between this and genuine haute couture in France, is that it is conceived as made-to-measure clothing. And I think this is what Gucci intends. I don't know if this premiere collection is available to regular customers. It seems very directed towards one-off red carpet appearances, no?

Besides, from a commercial viewpoint, this is a very clever move for Gucci. Too often we see celebrities wearing looks straight off the runway and although we are made to believe that woman would be more inclined to purchase a dress that has been worn by a celebrity, the truth is, nobody wants to be seen in something that is too ubiquitous or readily avaliable.

What Gucci is doing is trying to appease both customers by making itself seem more exclusive via this premiere line and also by restricting how many celebrities they dress (notice how little we have seen of the Fall collection compared to past seasons).

^ Exactly. Gucci is basically saying "If you want us to make you a dress then come and talk to us".
It's the targeted customer that's the challenge, not the targeting customer.
