I've been a long time reader of this message board, and I just recentely decided to join. It impresses me how when someone asks what designer designed a specific peice of clothing (like, seen on a celebritity or something) you all know who designed it and what collection it was in. How you do you guys keep on top of the trends and know all the collections and everything?

Yeah I feel the same way about this board. I'm a newcomer to fashion and sometimes I'm just in awe at some of the outfits people on here put together, their intricate knowledge of details in clothing and design....I love this board. Welcome to TFS by the way.

welcome:D

I dont know much about fashion but I surely have too much times in my hands:P

Welcome to TFS! I used to feel the same way; I was blown away by how someone could see a piece of clothing and know what designer/collection it was from. But now that I've been obsessively looking over collections for a while, I'm pretty good at it. But I never thought I'd be able to do it. It's just saturating your mind with fashion, I guess. You develop a feel for each designer, figuring out what makes each one unique. Then the process of elimination becomes easier and easier, until the answer often comes easily. I still have a LONG way to go to be where I'd like to be...

I work in fashion and my partner is a bike mechanic. He used to say how impressive it is that I could identify a trend, designer and store to buy from, and all from one look at someone's outfit.
But what blows me away, is he does exactly the same with bikes. He'll see someone cycle past, and he'll be able to say what kind it is whether its anygood or not. He'll even get it down to the smallest details of what kind of brake pads thats on the bike.
Often, when walking down street, he'll have to drag me away from a shop window, but then I'll be dragging him away from a nice bycyle tied to a lampost! :woot:

i know, sometimes it overwhelms me, but im still getting into the habit of posting more

My theory, EXACTLY. If you know, care, and see the beauty of any aspect of life, you can understand other people with similar passion. That is my huge problem with so called "intellectuals", who can't appreciate fixing a motorcycle or making a garment, but can go on for hours about the beauty of a painting. It really makes me feel that they are fake.

I have a present for your partner, BTW (and for you, as a matter of fact). It explains everything.

I'm fascinated myself how some people here know just about everything. *heart*

Me too. I've been reading for some time before daring to post. But what encouraged me was that most if not all members here are very open minded and tolerant to constructive critism / critique and are very free with advice and honest opinions. This is a fantastic place to be! Welcome FashionForward

so- what sites do you guys go to daily...
what mags do you read?...
any good books?...

please share your must-reads for fashion info!

^ I find blogs are the best for keeping up with either up and coming brands or brands that are being revived. Usually, like clockwork, I start seeing more local stores carry these brands a few months down the line.

Aside from that, I also flip through magazines and with my short attention span, I usually gravitate towards the blurbs, rather than the feature articles. I find these are actually the best places to find out interesting tidbits about designers, stores, fashion gossip, etc.

If it's runway I'm looking for, then I go to www.style.com. Nothing beats that site for runway images.

Mags:

British Vogue
Vogue Paris
L'Officiel (when I can get it)
i-D
Italian Vogue (occasionally)
US Vogue (occasionally)
purple

Blogs:
Sartorialist/Garance Dore/Streetpeeper/Cafe Mode/jakandJill/Facehunter (most of these i find quite irritating though)

...oh yes and I come here when I have time.

I also keep in touch through looking at various shop website - NAP/Matches/Browns/La Garconne/myTheresa/ASOS

I also try to go to Paris or London relatively frequently.....and obviously I watch people!

Welcome to the board! I learn about fashion from this forum and fashion magazines (occasionally books too).

Hm.. I actually learn quite a bit from vintage / boutique store clerks. They are all pretty fashion forward in the city... at least the ones I go to. Blogs are great too like the ones Helena listed. I also feel like looking at model streetstyle is a pretty fun and easy way to keep up with what the fashion forward are wearing... although sometimes their outfits are terribly trying, the individual pieces are usually right on trend.

It's neat because once you pay attention to it, it's like you tap into the collective consciousness of fashion, and can almost instinctively know what's in style and what's out.. to a degree.
