Hussein Chalayan F/W 07.08 Paris

the funny thing is, his real name is Hüseyin Çağlayan but he uses "Hussein Chalayan" so that people can pronounce his name, but seems like pronunciation is still a problem :D

it doesn't really impress me when it comes to concept but it's an admittedly gorgeous collection.. the shapes and materials.. it's all too good.

At least Ghesquiere cuts the best jackets and he designs clothes that is relevant to our everyday life. I'm not sure about Chalayan's recent two collections.

It does not matter if what Chalayan is designing for everyday life right now. What matters is that he is pushing the boundries in what is actually possible in fashion now. When we know what is possible, then we can move foward. No one needs a dress than can morph into another shape right now, but it's important and interesting to know what may come out of this idea in the future.

These past 2 collections will not please everyone. But I think it's important for someone to go in this direction.

I certainly don't love it as much as his last collection. Some of the pieces feel very contrived, and the stripes are extremely hipster. If the stripes were removed, I think, it would seem a lot more cohesive.

I really enjoyed the geometric, corseted pieces and the shapes on some of the pieces, but the stripes are just too distracting in some cases. Same with the black and silver metallics. The real standouts to me are the two burnt orange dresses. I think that's the direction he should've gone in because they are lovely.

I'm in love with the dark red and orange dresses with that geometric detailing :) Im not as keen on the stripes, but it's gorgeous overall.

it's really fun to read zazie's ebullience. such a joy.

True...I'm percolating over, but have you seen clothes like these elsewhere on the runway this season, or any other past seasons? :p I'm small-boned and high-waisted, and his cut will suit me to a t, and everything is so wearable.

And I  the stripes - my heart is set on the bodysuit that unfolds into a dress in stripes bit by bit like a bee. A dress like a toy I can play with, now that's a special kind of pleasure. The model was beaming the whole time. It's a kind of fun without being too childish. ^_^

You can see the smiles on the model how much they are enjoying dressing in this collection. Seriously, the look on the models' faces do tell a lot if the show is appreciated or just a dud.;)

Ok. Last season this was...GENIUS. But this season, it's quite obvious he's figured out what draws attention. I stil love that the clothes transform, etc, but last season gave me chills, this season...does nothing.

^Yeah it's really not something a person could wear in the fall or winter :ninja:

Anyway I still love all the shapes and lines in the designs
and how he combines different kinds of materials
Very interesting... it's so hard to find this kind of design looking at the other collections coming out now. So many seem to look alike or look like ordinary clothes, even with the new silhouettes--there's hardly any growth and experimentation anymore.

Oh I really wish he did menswear :p

Hi Lena!
Would you care to elaborate your opinion on this?

I'm really interested because often you seem to be noticing things that my untrained eye does not...
:flower:

Thanks!

^I guess you meant this
I was wondering as well:p
I can understand though, if it doesn't suit someone's taste

i'm sorry but i hate all of this, i find it real bad taste and uber hyped as usual.. :ninja:

I can understand not suiting someone's taste too...

However, Lena always seems to have an insightful opinion when commenting on collections and quite often her comments make me notice things I wouldn't have noticed if she had not pointed them out...

This is why I'm asking her to elaborate (provided that she has the time and will of course):flower:

I really, really dislike the bold blue stripes, but I love the rest. There are some incredibly beautiful pieces here, and I love how it manages to be futuristic without the "YEAH! MAD MAX AND ROBOTS!" gimmicky vibe that nauseated me last season. (Balenciaga, anyone?) There's just something about the collection that keeps drawing me back to it. Spring did the same.

This just might be the only context I can tolerate latex leggings in, too. Not on the average woman, but they do add something to the clothes here. I liked the presentation in general.

How short fashion memory is. Balenciaga did those same latex boot tights 2 yrs ago...
They are both mavericks and this collection has enough little dresses and items to sell in the stores. It rarely sells out, however.
A complicated mind for sure. At least he's developed into something more sexy and left the librarian look behind. Makes for a great show and addresses issues in a way others fail to.

I LOVE the latex tights! I think those are an awesome touch, and most of these jackets are great too :) I'd say I'm satisfied.
