bouh .... that is the one of the worst I.Marant's collection I've seen in years ...
the Emmanuelle Alt touch is really annoying ... and I can even feel she tried to make a Marant version of Balmain ...

I thought Condé Nast didn't want its editors to consult ! Shame !

But I'm also wondering if Marant isn't, now, making collections for her US and UK customers and no more for her French Fans !

i totally empathize with your feelings about Alt-ification...

But, isn't it actually the French who are the big Balmain fans (i think we can safely use "Alt" and "Balmain" interchangeably in this context )?

I can't speak for those in the UK, but most Americans don't seem to get it. I can't even think of a place in New York that stocks Balmain...

Anyway, for some seasons now, i've felt that Marant is basically a commercial designer, and commercially, i guess this makes sense right now.

i like them, but I far prefer them styled with the floral skirts than Altified.

i actually really like those looks with the longer skirts....there is something refreshingly eclectic and bohemian about them that brings to mind a more free-spirited Isabel.

i like how emmanuelle wore them with leather trousers, but wearing them like that is more expected, since everything has this "rock'n roll" vibe... the contrast they made with the floral skirts was definitely more interesting.

Isabel Marant, imo, always represented timeless, comfortable albeit interesting
clothes + silhouettes... It was special and very particular...

While, I love Alt's personal style and think it works quite well for HER, I'm starting to wonder if she's capable of anything else? I haven't been following her editorial work for a few months, but my god, all of her work is a mash-up of the same s**t... Balmain, Marant, and Daria Werbowy (sp?)... OLD NEWS, more or less...

TOTALLY agree, I buy a lot of Isabel Marant, and I buy it because it doesn't seem to belong to any particular season and but since I'm also not into a neutral style, i need something with added "spice". I think IM was the perfect mixture of this two ideas. But with this collection I'm not sure.

I like those Studded boots for example, Alt looks gorgeous on them, But I wouldn't buy them, they are the perfect example of what I'm not looking for in IM. If i want this type of "statement", I'm pretty sure i can find other designers that do it better.

in between all the flash and trash seems to be something i always find that is just right. this season i think she hits that mark closer than the last one but i cant argue its more difficult to see these days. her trousers seems to always hit the right spot on my hips and the tops seem to have the right amount of casual and pretty vibe i like to add season after season. cant argue overdone elements on the runway just get in the way of all the good stuff, but that seems to happen whenever hollywood gets involved.

^ Yep, as soon as it's seen on Nicole Richie and demands reach an all-time high, the novelty just goes out the window... It's all about dishing out that same look that will def. ensure sales...
It is definitely understandable from a business perspective, esp. in times like these, but it's sad to see Marant in this state... She had such a solid fanbase... the 'little-known' factor added to the Marant allure... as snobby & pretentious as that sounds..

i agree with you. when i "discovered" emmanuelle alt some years ago i fell in love with her and her vogue paris stories, then i found interesting her partnership with balmain, etc. but nowadays i love her more for her personal style and attitude than for her work, which has a good result if you look each story separately (and as if it was the first time you're seeing her work), but if you look at everything she's been doing, it all looks too similar (similar to her other works and similar to her personal style), and the influence she's been exerting on these desigers make everything look just trendy and uncreative... instead of thinking and trying to make something different, it's like they're just copying a style that is working at the moment - very commercial, which kind of makes sense..?

Idk maybe I'm too old school, but a part of me wishes all these stylists would've remained enigmas... it's becoming much too difficult to separate their own personal style from their achievements as stylists.... It's a shame because a lot of these people are truly talented...

Alt, Roitfeld, Lanphear, etc... the immense interest in their personal style, lives and philosophy on clothes + fashion is understandable..
Let's be frank, it is nice to see pictures of people with true style, whether they be fashion types or random individuals on the street... and one can't help but wonder what these people are like and also what kind of things these people may find appealing...
But this almost celeb-like frenzy in regards to these people is taking a toll on the richness and strength of their work as stylists...

But ah, I digress... am def. on a tangent... sorry mods!

I agree 100% and I think this really needed to be said. Personal style may inflect one's work as a creator (stylist, in this case) but it should not over take the object itself. I would love to hear some stylists sound off on this...in another thread of course.

I don't think you can even compare Balmain to this...Balmain didn't invent shoulder pads...mini dresses are nothing new!...their are no blatent references to Balmain...

No, he did not invent shoulder pads..but take a jacket when it's military inspired, suede and the extended shoulder pads..I believe Balmain produced a jacket exact like that in his collection.

It is also the swarovski crystal used..the shiny material..very party-girl... the boots look like Balmain did a couple of seasons ago which all the editors were wearing, which also had studs and suede.

I am just seeing too much of a 'euro trash' look here..and I am not liking it..but I guess it will suit her new L.A clientele.

what i would like to know, is, in isabel marant's case who steered the cart, her or the stylist? isabel marant, seems like a strong willed woman, but if this isnt her show then why bother? keeping in mind, the runway show is a staged version of the collection, its our personal style thats the greatest test of all. i think when this gets to stores it will be a pleasant surprise.

i like some of the pieces from this collection...but iam not sure about the overall vibe that she is routing. I was first attracted to IM in 2001 - on my honeymoon in Paris I bought a couple of pieces before I had even heard of her as a dsigner...i.e I genuinely liked the clothes not just any hype surrounding the label...and what attracted me was a sort of innocence...gamine cuteness, sexy but not knowingly-so.....if that makes sense. A typical french insouance....like jane birkin I suppose. This however seems to have moved away from that starting point.....which I guess maybe is understandable and everyone moves on or grows up....there is a much greater emphasis on sexy dressing......but not in such an innocent way. Maybe its Alt (I suspect so), maybe its giving people what they want.....(she is much more commercially sucessful now than when I first started buying her stuff).....

Its still good...and come Autumn in paris I will probably find 101 things I want....but I am just less keen on the vibe of the show.

I love it, adore it! It's like someone has taken what I attempt to construct in my personal style and put it all on the catwalk. I'm in love and if I had to pick ONE label to wear (head to shoes) this would be it.
