with all due respect I disagree with the above quote. I jumped into the mddle of this whole thing... and there are many points being thrown about so I'll just say...
I believe japan to, in general, to have a more compact, precise, and extreme expression of internal personal and group mentality.
Also the time of early chidhood to young adult, is I think is used differntly then perhaps other cultures. Also, what are exceptable forms to express taboos, sexuality, statues, are differnt then Other cultures. This does not mean better, worse, right or wrong, just differnt.
The opinion that tokyo is the 'most fashionable place in the world' is an opinion. You cant say thats right or wrong. I agree that it's NOT the most fashionable. But as a westerner in Japan, I felt the same way. Actualy I thought it was *the best dressed* Cuz everyone from the train operators to private school uniformed children, to the monks, to the elderly all had a well constructed, formal ''cute" uniform. ("Cute"??? yup. Even the Yakuza look pretty cute compared to USA's thug gangsta wear.)
The whole quote was really complicated.... I mean... ok?
I think they base most of what they wear, from what is coming out of europe and America, and as they do with everything, they turn it upside down. Make it smaller, more cute, and wear it in a way not exactly the way it was 'meant' to be worn.
The skill of matching others and 'fitting into a group' is also something I think we perceive as something unique in japans style. Every culture in the world deals with this. I think in Japan, It is more extreme version and leads to really cute, cool, interesting, more extreme trends. That tend to change quickly. Also being a culture based on being the same (which is very differnt then USA). The personal need to feel differnt is amplified perhaps....
I hope I'm not just talking to myself here.
but what do I know....
Interesting ideas... hope that wasnt too boring or snoby sounding.
