here are some i found, from the january 2005 girls on the street shift section:

well-said...
i've seen interviews with some of the kids in harajuku...
the interviewer asked some young kid why he was wearing what he was wearing...i think we all expected that he was going to say something meaningful about expressing himself and his individuality through his wardrobe...but he just sort of laughed in an embarrassed way and said it was because it was what everyone was wearing ...because it was 'the style'...turns out that they wear some things that are very different than anywhere else..but that they 'ALL' wear it...so it's not really individual after all...just another trend specific to that culture...

what may look like massive creativity to us...may look like mindless trendiness to others...

it was a completely different perspective and was very enlightening for me...

i completely know what you mean raijin...
doesn't mean i don't still see lots of creativity out there as well...

Coming from Hong Kong (where the youths try extremely hard to emulate Japanese style), I can see how kids who would be seen as "fashion-forward" by Westerners are often just trying to follow the latest trends that they see on Hong Kong and Japanese pop stars. For instance, when the punk/new wave look was in several seasons ago, I saw a lot of kids from Hong Kong wearing The Misfits t-shirts, Chuck Taylors,...the whole get-up, even though they didn't listen to punk at all.

does it really matter WHY they wear what they wear? when I go out I'm not thinking, "oh does this outfit expres my inner thoughts"

isn't the main thing that japanese street style is inspiring ( to me at least) and great to look at?!

i think their style is either a hit or miss. but personally, i think only the japanese can pull it off, if we were to dress like that we'll probably look ridiculous. ;p that said, i do like many of the clothes worn in those pictures, especially the stockings, blazers, scarves etc. but living in singapore where its summer everyday of the year, its not really practical to be wearing so many layers. sigh
