Jil Sander Mens F/W 06.07 Milan

I like the fact that he started at JS so modestly.

Thanks for the article Mutterlein:-)

This collection is much needed breath of fresh air. This as good as an opening collection as you could expect. I have a feeling Jil Sander is going to be back in the black next year...

I am slightly let down. The only thing I really see myself buying is the camel zip up. However, the S/S stuff that is rolling out into stores looks really promising.

This collection is growing on me, especially after viewing the whole collection at GQ Style website. My eyes are getting used to the looks with more experimental proportions...and as for the classic looks that seem like a throwback to Jil with the knitwear or simple tailored coat over clean white shirt and dark trousers with black shoes, that's how I remember my dad dressing in his prime. I'd wear a lot of these clothes if I was 30+ for sure...now I can't wait for the women's collection, hopefully my whole family can step out in these clothes some day!

Menswear fashion seems so youth obsessed you forget that older men want to look good as well. Especially with Raf Simons who is known for his references to youth culture, it comes as a surprise, but it is smart. Raf clearly understands the Jil Sander market or at least who the company should be catering to if it wants to succeed financially. Like you said, I could definitely wear this if I was 30+. One fear I have now with the womenswear is that it will be a bit too douty and older. I'm not too worried but it'll still be interesting.

Actually for the womenswear I'm just hoping for a female version of this...would be a nice way to begin his foray into womenswear. What I meant by female version of this is...something kinda reminiscent of Jil/Helmut minimalism in their prime but with a modern update through Raf's play on fabrics and proportions...it'd be interesting to see how some of these shapes translate into androgynous, but futuristic womenswear.

I just don't want it to be too matronly. Raf has always been really fun about his use of fabrics as so has Jil so I am thinking it's a sure thing we'll get some interesting clothes.

I also  the cardigan. About the 80's, we've been talking about it, and it really seems to have come back! "Designer" 80's as opposed to plastic street 80's. Here, the silhouette at McQueen, Prada's knits... The Japanese feel more relevant than in a long time. It's all about volume with some quirkyness. Wider cuts, higher waists. It feels fresh again after slim has become as tight as it possibly can...

That's how I feel, anyway...

i know tott...
i guess if you live long enough, you see everything come round again...
it seems we're easing out of 'punk' and into 'new romantic' (see gucci)
he even used an 80's song to close the show...
ah well...i'm not complaining...
i was too young (and too poor) to wear the stuff back then...
so i am happy to have a second crack at the look...
the best i could do back then was some thrift store version of the runway...
can't wait for the women's show!!!...

^_^...

though i wouldn't mind it if someone came up with something really NEW one of these days...
:innocent:

i think it's a good first collection for jil sander, i need to remember not to expect too much of raf in the collection, though!

It might just be a little too forward for some people on this thread that raf has gone for a boxier look... i could see the same ppl wearing his stuff and raving about it down the line... The whole overall slim-fit thing is getting stagnant...
the variations of proportion seen in this show is a breath of fresh air to me..its very simple and clean cut but isnt that what Jil Sander is about??
Whoever said that this collection doesnt have Raf's enitire input is downright wrong.. this has Raf written all over it... And im happy that he is brave enough to make this move(of different proportions) but I agree it does remind me of Yohji, a lil bit but honestly speaking i like the fact that he has gone for tapered fitted trousers with those coats.. I am quite interested in where all this is going to end up.. im with Raf on this one..

and like someone said before.. the more i look at the clothes, the more i get what Raf is trying to communicate through them..

so, this collection has been sitting at the back of our minds for a couple of days now..does nayone have anything different (or positive) to say?

i've got to tell you. this is one of my big favourites so far. i mean, first and foremost i love the fact that raf simons brought back something not yet ripe for a comeback, the 90's. and made a very distinctive look out of it. i think the anti-fashion-nness of it is fantastic.

and second..how excited does this make you to see the women's line?!:woot:

I'm with the "tired of the Dior Homme cliche" clique here. It actually looks very fresh and modern for me to see this slightly bell shape for men. It's been happening with the women's wear, having the sizes slightly off and askewed. It looks a tad uncomfortable, as we are so used to the rather dated black, skinny silhouette. This is so much less in-your-face-sexy, it fits into the new vibe.

the only thing I detest is that weird curvy neckline...gimmicky. Otherwise, damn cool clothes. I don't think it's for "older" guys, becuase the really old guys are wearing Dior Homme, heheh...;P

Ah, now I know what this collection reminds me of...the first collection of fashion from Mandarina Duck! :)

The more I look at it, the more I like it. The outerwear drapes so nicely, it follows the silhouette of the body but in a very loose, gentle way, all without appearing baggy (ie, like Prada this season) nor shapeless. Masterful stuff is being done here. Understated, subconcious elegance, which is what Jil Sander is all about.

*had to rescue this thread from the 4th page*

I think I was at first disappointed with this, but I think GQ style put it rather well - "fashion in it's purest form"

I don't think I could ever doubt Raf, because he's a designer with integrity - real integrity, and that's why I love him. I imagine that up close, this collection is very impressive.

Why is everything 12 sizes too big? I don't understand. It might be something else if these pieces had some sort of shape but I can't even give them that. Also, isn't Jil known for slimmer fitting pieces?

I don't find it boring or safe at all. It is one of the riskiest collections, because it is trying to convince men to wean from the DH skinny silhouette which has been with us for what? 10 years? I love it, because it is very difficult to get it exactly right, bigger, voluminous, yet not baggy or ill-fitting. It probably took a lot of experimenting with cut and tailoring to get the collection looking like this.
