Lily-Rose Depp

lily-rose depp opens up about the media circus and her true passion

We are built to admire. We crave it. There are plenty of stars and icons, yet we keep looking for the next one to fall from the sky (or our Instagram feeds). Like Lily-Rose Depp: 16 years-old, divine ancestry (she's Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis' daughter), heavenly cheekbones (well, yeah, she's Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis' daughter), celestial aura (she has the world's coolest social media presence and a burgeoning film career). She's a beautiful, modern little earth angel. Yet completely straightforward. As she tells us:

"I grew up with the media circus. My whole life. My parents were very calm about the photographers, the fans, and all that. But I understood right away that I hadn't done anything to deserve that attention. No matter what happens, it will be there. I didn't choose it. You just can't take that too seriously. You need to live your life. And stay calm."
Lily-Rose has calmness in spades when we meet her backstage after the Chanel runway show, surrounded by a circle of whimpering admirers. Not just any admirers, but it-girls in their own right like Kendall and Cara. All there to admire this divine child. Six months ago (an eternity in Internet Time), at the Chanel Métiers d'Art event, she made her first big appearance, in pastel. Since then, she's booked a Chanel campaign, as well as two major roles in French films (Rebecca Zlotowski's Planetarium with Natalie Portman and The Dancer with Soko).

So she's a pro backstage at her third runway show. Lily-Rose smiles politely, her posture superstraight in a strapless top, her bun high on her head. Kaiser Karl keeps an eye on her from a distance, Vanessa keeps an eye on her from a bit closer. "For now, what I like most is making films," says Lily-Rose. When we ask if she plans on a long career in the cinema, she shrugs and smiles: "I'm a Gemini, very spontaneous. For now, I'm having fun doing it, we'll see what happens later." Nonchalantly, ever-lightly, she's making her own way in the world.

2015 was the year of... lily-rose depp

She came, she saw, she conquered the internet.

On March 31st, Lily-Rose Depp made her first official public appearance, at the Chanel Métiers d'Art show in New York, and the internet officially broke. Who was this wide-eyed, elfin beauty dressed head to toe in pastel Chanel? More importantly, how could we find out? A quick click and a scroll later, and numerous YouTube videos were unearthed featuring the oldest daughter of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis, and by the next day, the whole world was obsessed. We tirelessly pilfered through her public Instagram in a bid to find out more about our new queen of everything, and the world's coolest teenager. For a while, this is all we had to go on and lengthy opinion pieces about the power of celebrity and the rise of a social media it girl were conjured out of thin air. But as the year unfolded, a few things begun to happen, and the mystery of Lily-Rose Depp began to unravel, making 2015 the year of Lily-Rose Depp. Here's what we've learnt so far:

She became an LBGTQ ally
Following the footsteps of Miley Cyrus and Cara Delevingne, Lily Rose is the latest star to reject labelling when it comes defining her sexuality. Joining actresses Gaby Hoffman and new step mum Amber Heard, the 16 year old has lent her face to a new campaign called Self Evident Truths, in which artist and activist iO Tillett Wright hopes to take the portrait of 10,000 individuals who identify as being somewhere on the LGBTQ spectrum. Now coming out as being definitively non-heterosexual could be read as a bit of a meh statement. But when you consider the good that will come of someone like Lily Rose, who is very much in the public eye, challenging gender binaries and highlighting the fluidity of one's sexuality, it's actually inspirational. Not only does it help to normalize what has previously been regarded as 'other', it also encourages more and more people to stand up and speak out about LGBTQ issues.

She opened up Chanel to the next generation
First she rocked a pastel look at the Chanel Métiers d'Art, then she was a vision in black for the spring/summer 15 casino themed show walking in arm in arm with Lily Collins, and she cemented her relationship with the brand when she was revealed as the exquisite face of Chanel's latest eyewear collection, Pearl, shot by the one and only Kaiser Karl. She also made a pit stop at Chanel's very own spring/summer 16 airport runway, as well as featuring heavily at the brand's Mademoiselle Privé exhibition following in her mother's footsteps as face of the fashion house.

She had her first spread in French Vogue
The Clockwork Orange-esque editorial, shot by Inez and Vinoodh appeared in 95th anniversary issue French Vogue. In the images, Depp, much like her guy-liner loving dad, wears super thick mascara and heavy eye make-up. But her signature pink cheeks and over-all cool aesthetic are still very much present. J'adore!

She came of age
While most Hollywood tweens were getting fancy cars and diamond rings, Lily-Rose threw her very own 'sour' 16th where she dressed up in chains, held a sword and wore a string of onions around her neck proving Lily-Rose is anything but average.

She's demonstrated how down to earth she really is
In an exclusive interview with i-D, the sweet 16 year old told how she grew up with the media circus. "My parents were very calm about the photographers and the fans," she explained, "But I understood right away that I hadn't done anything to deserve that attention. No matter what happens, it will be there. I didn't choose it. You just can't take that too seriously. You need to live your life and stay calm."
She launched her acting career
With a cameo in Rejjie Snow's music video, and four movie roles already under her exceptionally stylish belt, including one opposite her dad in the new Kevin Smith film Yoga Hosers and another opposite Natalie Portman, it's fair to expect big things from this one. As the doe-eyed beauty said herself, "I'm a Gemini, very spontaneous. For now, I'm having fun doing it, we'll see what happens later."

It's even weirder since the guy on the pics is a French actor, Guillaume Gouix.

When I shot the scene in Tusk when I was 14.

It was on Tusk and it was so fun! That was when I realized I wanted to be an actor. I was also surrounded by friends and family so it was a great experience!

What's the major difference between acting and modeling?

Acting is more emotional

What's your favourite movie?

Who would be the dream director to work with?

Quentin Tarantino

Where do you see your career progressing?

I don't have any plans in particular, I just know this is what I want to do and I want to work hard at it, and hopefully keep finding roles as beautiful as the ones I've already been lucky enough to come across.

Victoria Secrets model and Lily Rose Depp's best mate Stella Maxwell talks to LOVE about their friendship. From wondering the streets of Paris together to drawing a very apt "LOVE" on their foreheads with lipstick, or donning comedy fangs, Stella tells her what makes Chanel eyewear campaign star Lily Rose such a good friend.

"With 7 billion people on our planet the odds of meeting any individual are inconceivable" says Stella of her and Lily's friendship,"let alone meeting someone you appreciate and love as a dear friend. Someone like Lily."

Stella continues; "She's one in 7.3 billion. Literally "

It’s only a few weeks away from the opening of Lily-Rose Depp’s first film Yoga Hosers, a Kevin Smith comedy-horror, and now we’re being treated to the first look at another of the budding actress-model’s projects: a film about sisters who possess the ability to connect with ghosts.

If that weren’t exciting enough, Depp’s sister will be played by Natalie Portman who will help her figure out the spooky happenings going on in 1930s Paris.

Today, Depp shared a first look at the film – a single image of the pair in beautiful silk dresses looking into the sun. While it’s thin on the ground in terms of plot details, it’s enough to capture our imaginations, particularly because they look so believably related in the shot.

According to reports, the film has already finished filming and could be out as early as May this year.

Besides the Kevin Smith movie, she’s also got the starring role in Stephanie Di Giusto’s film The Dancer based on American dance pioneer Loie Fuller. She’ll play Isadora Duncan, a prodigy who came from poverty and revolutionised dance in the process. Two days ago she professed a desire to work with auteur Quentin Tarantino, adding “I just know (acting) is what I want to do and I want to work hard at it, and hopefully keep finding roles as beautiful as the ones I’ve already been lucky enough to come across”. Last year the stage was set for Depp, and 2016 will see her firmly showing us what she’s got.
