MacBook

oh yes! i ruined my first laptop with juice. i almost ruined my sony also but they could replace the keyboard. i always use a second keyboard with my mac, so it's more likely to brake the additional one. i need my coffee in the morning with my mac, so i can't do the no drinks near the computer but i do try to put it further afar. :p

agreed! cannot go without my coffee in the morning or my tea at night.. but perhaps i will have to next time!

I've had my black macbook going on 4 years in may and it's still great and I use it 10+ hours a day almost everyday since i got it. It's a trooper and I love it. Hopefully it can last two more years till im done university, then I'll buy a new one. I'd never go back to pc, they are ****.

currently typing from my new macbook pro which i just received! highly recommend it!!

I have been thinking of of getting a mac, now reading all these comments makes me think it is deffently worth buying for uni!

They're definitely useful for university! You do have to buy Office separately which is a pain, but it's nice to have the little extras. I got MobileMe when I got my macbook last year, which syncs the computer and the iphone as well as serves as an online storage disk. It has seriously saved my butt quite a few times when I'm trying to print something out and forgot my flash drive, or needed to pull up a phone number when I didn't have my phone on me once!

I love my mac - the ease of use is just incredible. Once you start on a mac you'll never go back!!!

thanks for the tip labelleetoile, i will be sure to keep that in mind when i get my mac

For sure. I'm so in love with Macs, there are so beautiful and so useful!
I just love mine. After I bought one my own Macbook two years ago, I just cannot use another kind of computer.
I work as art director and graphic designer, with a Mac everything is much easier, Adobe programs work faster and the interface is so beautiful! Even the simplest Macbook is great.

You know what guys?!!
I still have nothing!!! Ordered on 15/05 !!

I'm so angry right now!!!
I can't believe what a fool they made of me!!

If you order online you have a choice to buy either Standard, 2 Day or Next Day Delivery which is an extra $15 - $23 respectively.
I don't know if you, Laurianne, went for a faster delivery, but it usually doesn't take any longer than 5-7 business days if you go by Standard shipping.

@Festat: Yeah sorry I meant 15/04

And I bought my MBP in an Apple Premium Reseller...that's why it take sooooo long!!!

ok so apple quietly updated the MacBook

now the regular MacBook is pretty much leveled with the 13' MacBook Pro

with the price tag at 200 dollars less, maybe some may want to rethink....

ok, the only difference is the 4 GB of memory to the 2 GB on the MacBook
but 2 GB are not worth the 200 dollar difference.

it's actually $100 difference on their website which you can upgrade when you purchase.

it seems all Macs have going for them is the OS, because when it comes to specs, even after their much awaited updates, they are have fallen behind their competitors. sad but true.

So I am thinking of getting a Macbook; however, I have been using a PC for about 10 years and I am worried about the transition. What kind of virus software can I install on a Mac, and would you suggest buying the Office 2008 for Mac software? The majority of my university work and content is PC-based.

I got a Macbook after more than 10 years of PC-ing. It's more than easy, now I accidentally try to press command button on PC. I just got it out of box, turned it on and just entered who I am and where I am, and thats it. It was ready. 5 minutes later I was playing with Photobooth. It connects to wifi seamlessly.
Security wise... All you have to do it turn on firewall, its off by default (its in System Preferences>Security). I read up on antivirus and Mac, and I decided I don't need one for my Mac. But you might want one, maybe go for Avast, if you access lots of public networks or get a lot file sharing with flash drives, etc.). :innocent:
There is a cool app called Preview, that opens pretty much every image file and pdf, there is also a built-in unarchiver and so on.
I installed iWork, Keynote (the Power Point equivalent) is cool, Numbers also is better than Excel, but I don't really like Pages the text editor. I think Word 07 is best text editor. It's more intuitive and flexible than Pages, when I wanted to work with some tables, it felt like working with Word 97.:ninja:
I also hate Safari, it's just as bad and slow as Internet Explorer. I got Opera and Chrome (Flash tends to crash Opera on Mac and Youtube doesn't work play anything on Opera).
Quick Time and that cinema app play most videos, but I had to install Divx and Flip4mac (wma/wmv support).
And I'm not sure about the Magic Mouse, it's not really that ergonomic, altho it feels cool (literary) and it has multitouch features and so on (I got BetterTouchTool app to manage the mouse better). It also eats batteries very fast, like in 10 weeks. So a different mouse if probably better.
Dashboard is cool thing, Stickies are better than in Windows and I really like how the apps and everything works on Mac, it's sort of "cleaner" than Windows or Linux.
I don't regret going Mac, there are things that I love, things that I hate, but all in all, they are good. I like how the case is seamless and it doesn't creak and squeak like other laptops (with exception of Sony and Dell) and typing is easy, keyboard is high quality, trackpad is great.
Go over the new to Mac video on Apple home page, it's really enlightening. And see a Mac in a store, play with it a bit and I think you might fall for it. :flower:

Thanks, rayoflight. So you don't have Windows for Mac software (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint)? And are the specs on this MacBook fine (I would only be using it for internet, personal use and university work/assignments)?

No, I don't really miss any of the Windows software on Mac, as long as don't have to make complicated page layouts with Pages. Otherwise everything is good.
Lol, I think my Macbook is the same as that in your link, or very similar, mine has bit different graphics card, I think. It runs ok, I thought of upgrading to 4GB RAM, but so far it woks more than fine with 2GB. The only think I might get is an external hard drive, since the music folder alone is almost 90GB. So, yes, I'd say it's a good choice, fast web browsing, music, some movies, little bit of photo/video editing, loads of text processing, ebooks, chatting (Skype, for mac it's somehow nicer than Win version, but it took a while to realize that), thats all I do and it never had a problem with problem with performance.:woot:
And the battery is really almost 10 hours, but thats with lots of features turned ff. But closer to real life, with Bluetooth, Wifi, music, web browsing ,display brightness to 80% it's about 4-5 hours.

everyone goes on about installing windows office on mac... but i actually find pages easier to use and more intuitive (like macs on the whole) and when your done you just export it to a .doc file...
no need to waste money on office.

Yep, not to mention IWork is cheaper than Office and I think students get discounts on iWork and Macs (like $100).
