Matthew Williamson Gets Colorful for H&M

Matthew Williamson’s bright peacock feather-colored designs will strut around H&M twice this spring. The British designer created two collections for the fast-fashion retailer inspired by the brilliant blue, green and iridescent plumage of the swaggering bird.

The first, a premium, limited edition women’s collection, will bow on April 23 at 200 H&M units worldwide. Featuring cashmere, leather, sequins and embroidery, prices for the line range from $49.90 for shorts to $349 for a ruffle gown.

As an encore, H&M on May 14 will introduce a more populist collection of Williamson’s women’s and men’s styles in all the retailer’s 1,700 locations. This will be the first time a designer collaboration is available at all H&M stores.

“We like his signature style, colorful patterns and ethnic influences,” said Margareta van den Bosch, H&M’s creative director, of Williamson. “The huge interest that these collaborations garner means that often the collections sell out very quickly. We wanted everybody to have a chance to own some of the collection. In a new step, the second part will be available in stores for a longer period of time.”

“I was inspired by the idea of the colors of a peacock feather,” said Williamson, who reworked iconic shapes from his repertoire. “There’s a leather biker jacket and a tailored silk electric blue trouser suit inspired by my last show.” Several pieces contain a peacock feather motif, including a jersey dress, patchwork clutch and peacock feather necklace.

An ad campaign shot in Tulum, Mexico, featuring Daria Werbowy and Williamson as the face of the men’s line, will promote the H&M collaboration. In Europe, there will be print and television spots.

“There’s a certain eclecticism to the collection,” Williamson said. “It was interesting for me to do the men’s wear. For the first time in 12 years, I could think of what I’d want to wear myself. I went to my wardrobe and picked out my favorite pieces and reworked things I’ve collected. The vibe is British boy on holiday in Cuba returning to England by way of Ibiza or one of the Greek islands.”

Asked whether customers of his signature collection will shop for his designs at H&M, Williamson said, “There’s a definite crossover in the aesthetic and the way women buy clothes now. It’s not about one singular idea or designer, it’s about mixing things up. It would be interesting to see a woman in both collections.”

Oh no. The Menswear is awful :ninja:

nitrolicious.com has the still photo images of all the items in the first shipment.

here are some of the best in my opinion. i still can't tell if the gray/army green/brown leather jacket is shrunken or not (i hope it is) from the pic it looks quite plasticy. its probably not worth getting.

im not at all interested in the purse. i think it looks silly.

the shorts are 50$ which i think is too much. 40$ would have been perfect pricepoint.

also it looks like the 350$ ruffle dress has two versions. one with black panels and one without.

i like the embroidery work on these items. but enough to pay 250$ for the jumpsuit.

H&M is not even bothering to run print advertisements in the US so this stuff will only be available in a few stores. its not worth getting excited about in that sense.

MAJOR QUESTION: is this line going to released for one day like say the comme des garcon line or is it going to be available in large quantity?

itll be a letdown if im going to have to go through the chaos again if its only for one day. i didnt even get anything last time.

I had high hopes for this... I love matthew williamson. But this isn't great... I doubt I'll buy any of these pieces. Bummer!

the stuff shown will only be in select stores. (200) and yes, most of it will probably sell out the first day. (at least the good stuff)

the 2nd collection will be released in may and will be in all stores for a longer period.

wait so the ones on the first release are different from the second release?

correct, we havent seen anything from the 2nd release yet.

The second collection will be in all stores:woot:?! I just wish the closest H&M wasn't so far away from me:doh: I hope the menswear will still be good because to be honest, I really like what he made.

A little birdie told me it's about 30 pieces per look:innocent:

this is confusing. so the items were seeing right now are only going to be available on the first release?

as for the second release, theyre going to keep restocking it after the release.(?)

I'm so disappointed in this collection. I had high hopes for Matthew Williamson but everything is like a puked up throw back to the 80's. Ugh.

The only things I like from the 1st collection are the brown leather jacket and that colorful scarf. I doubt I'll be able to purchase either though b/c they probably won't stock them at my H&M.

I have strong suspicions that the second collection, to be released to all stores in May is their big swimwear campaign. So much like the Kylie lines, it'll mostly consist of beachwear/swimwear and accessories.
