Overrated Actors

I don't agree... I think Depp is an excellent character actor, and to compare him to Tom Cruise is insane. Has "never tried to get away from his sex symbol status?" Look at the array of nutty or off-beat characters he has played, for example, in Benny & Joon, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Fear & Loathing..., ... Scissorhands...

In all of those, except for Fear and Loathing..., he looks so-calledly "cute".

I am not saying Depp hasn't done any good roles (Gilbert Grape, Donnie Brasco...), but in many of them there are points that could be done better...And when weighing in all his hits compared to his misses, he is quite mediocre.

I don't see almost any difference in the quality of films and publicity between Cruise and Depp anymore. The thing that is different is that Depp has recognition (which has come from constantly ranting about Hollywood to reporters while still being part of it...).

But we probably just have different tastes :flower:

Natalie Portman is verrrry overrated as well. Beautiful but bland, just like Scarlett. She was totally overrated in "Closer" (might just be Clive Owen, though, cause he outshone everyone in that film imo), "Garden State", "V For Vendetta" (the accent bugged).

The only movies I've liked her in are two movies she did from when she was younger, "Leon" and "Heat", and I also thought she was the best thing about "Cold Mountain." She has 10 minutes of screentime in that movie and outshone everyone else in the film, even Renee Zelwegger imo (who won an Oscar for her role!).

But in everything else, she is overrated.

I recently saw Bobby (which I loved, btw). All I heard was how great Sharon Stone is in it and how she might get an Oscar for it.

I beg to differ. She was okay, but there were others who defnitley outshined her in the movie, like Nick Cannon, Freddy Rodrigeuz, Shia Lebeouf, Laurence Fishbourne.... Where's their Oscar buzz?

there is a difference between Overrated and OVEREXPOSED.

I want to see which critic is rating Lindsey Lohan so highly in the first place for her to be overrated.

My vote for most overrated actor is Johnny Depp

another for Depp. I really started hating him after I watched Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

It's undeniable that Depp is a good actor, he just hasn't been in many/any good films...

Penelope Cruz

Why? Why? Why?

Im really sorry but I have to say Jennifer Aniston, I now im going to get lots of rubbish about it but I dont like her as a actress, I find her far more intressting in talk shows, where she is her self:ermm:, and I dont know why. But her movies just dont leave up to her "fame".

colin ferrel, leocaprio, joshhartnett
all terrible actors
g. paltrow
terrible actress

Has anyone brought up Julia Roberts yet?

I'm sorry, but I will not spend money to watch her, play herself on screen. Every movie is the same part. The same cheeky grins and unfaulting belief that she's may or may not be Jesus.

Same thing can be said for Gwyneth Paltrow. I cannot stand watching her give interviews. She always seems so bothered to have to actually address people. To speak to us on such a pedestrian level. The same can be said for her "acting," which except for a few sparkling moments in the past, has been less than interesting over the last five years. She, in turn, has developed that same Julia Roberts-esque habit of just playing yourself over and over again, instead of actually acting.

shes not even in the industry anymore so I would hardly think she applies. She was, however always overrated when she was in movies

.

Couldn't agree more, I thought I was the only one who didn't like her

I hate Russell Crowe('s acting abilties). I can't watch him on screen. It's like nails against a chalk board.

I also don't like Kiera Knightly(her acting style, of course), but I mean, who does!? Pshhh.

I think most of the HOllywood A-list are overrated. They're so focused on their images and selling themselves that a lot of them seem to have forgotten their actual purpose and that they are smaller than the film itself. I agree with the abovementioned - Nicole Kidman (where did the sudden adoration come from these past few years post-Cruise? She has an excellent team around her). Jennifer Aniston is Tv, gwyneth paltrow, julia roberts (although i just watched Pretty Woman and I forgot how pretty she was).

Most performances i find repetitive. Although i think some like Russel Crowe are good actors for example, after a while you see them just revert to the same emotional reactions. Many seem to have developed particular expressions or reactions and just stick to them for every role they play. All their performances just seem to merge into eachother.

Other actors- their faces are soo distracting that i can't concentrate on their performance. The more private actors, the less we know about them, the better the performance imo.

Some come to my mind now...
Teri Hatcher (She is the worst desperate wife.)
Julia Roberts (I really don't get her at all.)
Angelina Jolie (Too bad she lives in a stereotype role.)
Gwyneth Paltrow
Tom Cruise ("Magnolia" is the only good work he has done.)
Audrey Tautou
Jamie Foxx (He is just lucky to get "Ray.")
Keira Knightley
Gong Li (She has been deteriorating.)
Ziyi Zhang

Penelope Cruz is very good in Spanish-spoken films, but not in English-spoken ones. It has nothing to do with her accent. I think somehow her acting ability is handicapped by the language barrier.

i think the same can be said for the foreign ones on your list (penelope is really very good and commendable in spanish language films :crush: ... even in italian for don't move). gong li i find to be exceptional in movies using her native tongue. and i agree about jamie foxx ... i didn't even find his role in ray as good a performance as it is as mimicry. :ninja:

Cameron Diaz...I only liked her in there's something about mary and that was years ago. Her acting is so unnatural. :ninja:

tom cruise... cameron diaz....penelope....

cameron diaz is very hit or miss
i really liked her in being john malkovich, shrek (even though it's just her voice), in her shoes and there's something about mary
but movies like the sweetest thing and the invisible circus are beyond deplorable. i also really hated any given sunday, but that's not entirely her fault.

jesus christ i've seen a lot of her movies
