Parsons School of Fashion, New York

Thank you soo much to everyone who has posted here, eventhough I'm now terrified :ninja:

I have so much to ask.
1) So Parson's is $40 000 CDN / year? Does that include residence?
2) The only schools I know for sure that I am applying for are 1) Parsons 2) FIT. I'm in Canada, and there's nothing here. And I'm not planning to go to CSM. What else can I consider?
3) I am in grade 10. What can I do now to help me in the future? Extra classes outside of school? What about course selections?
4) What needs to be in the portfolio?! My dad says I should start working on it now
5) Is co-op useful? Or a waste of time?
6) IF I can graduate from Parsons/FIT, what's next?

..Any other advice?

I hope this somehow relates to the topic.. because I really need to make sure I want to go to Parsons because of the cost. Please help and I'll forever be in your debt :blush:

What's CSM? You can consider Ryerson if you want to stay in Canada. They do a grad show for Holt Renfrew in forth year and that can get you some exposure.

The $40,000 DOES NOT include residence fees and books. A year at Parsons is more than a year at any old line boarding school in Ontario (where boarding tuition can be up to like $38,000...including rez and food)

I think that Parsons is expensive, but what you get out of it is amazing. Look at Donna Karen, Marc Jacobs. They've made a career out of their education.

Donna Karan dropped out after 2 years...

Actually, she failed I believe out, studio methods or it's equivalent course at the time of her attendence. :innocent:

What do you do after you graduate Parsons or FIT? Look for a job of course. If you're in grade 10, you've got 2 years to really think about things, right? I wouldn't sweat it so much. Goodluck in whatever path you decide to proceed with.

ick i am in grade 9 and i am freaking out about what i am going to do. tho i have somewhat of a plan....but still parsons is ridiculously expensive but i really want to go there!!! are there any other places that are not so expensive but still as well known?

As far as I can figure, FIT is the next best thing, then Otis (in LA). Those are $20,000 and $30,000 respectively. the only school with a comparable reputation would be CSM, but I believe that's more expensive than Parsons.

As an aside, this is not the top 100 global universities, it is Newsweek's top 100 global universities. And it's pretty rubbish, it includes numerous American universities high up whose international reputations are second rate. The THES ratings are better respected (or even the flawed Shanghai table).

THe THES list is still mostly comprised of fee-paying schools.

ERM... sh*t?! How much for foundation year? Forty grand also? I was planning to apply for foundation at Parsons after I finish my English degree but not if it is that much. I may try to either go foundation at a London school, or bypass foundation and try and get into the Slade's BA course. Btw I don't want to do fashion -I want to do fine art. Is there anywhere better (and cheaper) in NY or the East Coast where I can do a fine art foundation?

School of Visual Arts.

Sorry so late in replying--haven't kept a subscription to this thread.

You young highschoolers should chill down don't overexcite yourself and make sure you want to really go to parsons. If you don't come from a big school Parsons may not be it niether may be FIT. Both are extremely competetive to get in to ,stay, and get in the JUry shows. There are alot of other schools that have fashion programs just find the right spot. and research. I'm a senior in highschool and even though now I feel overwhelmed researching and deselecting schools like Parsons or Otis , Acedemy Arts in San Fransisco due to money and big school I chose Pratt or FIT. I;m a a real art drivin person so Pratt really gives me that feel without the cutthroat competition of Parson.
May be you should look to Paris they have fashion schools there that aren't super expensive and CSM isn't that expensive compared to Parsons. Just research and take the enviromnent in mind when choosing a school.

I don't understand why everyone's freaking out about the price. Private universities in the US generally cost about that much. The school I want to go to in upstate NY will end up being about $40,000 for tutition, room and board. Then I'll have to pay more for books, supplies, plane tickets and fun. Some schools I looked at cost about $38,000 for tutition alone. It's not that insane for a private college in the US

that has to be the most flawed biased uni rankings i've seen- cambridge at 6 and imperial at 17- i did not go to the 6th and 17th best unis!!

I'm in the same boat as you...I got a letter from Parsons a week ago, and I litterally couldn't open it I was shaking so bad..it ended up being a letter to tell me I needed to complete my application..which is crap since I did..and now they won't answer my phone calls or my e-mails..

I really hope that if ( Please let me in) I get accepted the financial aid/ scholarship they give us will be somewhat credible...

Haha. I am having the same issue. The whole online application status is a mess. I had to send my transcripts twice by mail and fax, yet it seems they still haven't recieved them.

Khoipond, I know how you feel! I was shaking so bad when I opened my letter. I'm really sorry you guys are having such a hard time with the app. process. It's hard enough as is...

Just so you guys know, you can't get really stressed out about the application process...and stop thinking if your're the right fit for parsons and think is parsons the right fit for you...fashion design is the most popular program at the school so classes tend to have more students (especially required classes)...

RANDOM BITS AND PIECES ABOUT PARSONS and FIT THAT I WISH SOMEONE WOULD HAVE TOLD ME WHEN I WAS APPLYING:

Parsons is a private school...your total costs after tution, fees, housing, meals etc.= $40,000-$45,000 USD (take off about $10,000 if you don't have housing)
FIT is a state school...your total costs after tution, housing, fees etc. will be about $25,000 (take off $10,000 if you're in-state resident)

FIT has a very small campus, Parsons doesn't have a campus at all...b/c of FIT's limited space they only have like two dorm halls thus you can only live on campus for your freshman year (this may have since changed in the last 2 years, but I don't think so)....b/c Parsons doesn't have a real campus they have buildings all over the village were they house kids and there are four freshman dorms (Loeb and union square are apartment style as in bedrooms living room kitchen union sq. have huge loft style suites gisele and leo used to live in the pent house of that buliding but the staff as in RA's and security guards are crazy strict DO NOT LET THEM CATCH YOU DRUNK SERIOUSLY DONT LET THEM CATCH DRUNK OR HIGH. 13th street and Marlton are dorm style as in bunk beds and all that-Marlton is GHETTTTOOO but the staff is really chilll as in they dont really care what you do) and 2 upperclassman dorms (in chelsea and tribeca)...If you are pursuing a BFA, foundation (first yr.) is gonna kick your *** no jokebut after that it gets better....Parsons is a realllllly liberal and kind of hipster-y (there are alot of misshapesw, cobrasnake, last nights party kind of kids) whereas FIT is a little bit more "suburban" (as in juciy couture, long guyland types) you can take classes at both Eugene Lang and Parsons and you get a B.A. and a B.F.A. when you graduate....um let me know if any highschoolers have questions b/c you need all the facts before you decide

2 hrs south of the catfight

I'm kind of surprised that no one on this site is aware of Drexel University's fashion program in Philadelphia. I'm not suggesting it is any cheaper than any of the other private schools, but it's a fantastic program (lots of individual attention in classes, great resources, lab access 24/7, very connected to NY fashion world) that really pushes the development of artistic and the technical knowledge equally. Plus, the classes are much smaller, and the atmosphere is really supportive and much less bitchy than more well-known schools. It's a tough program, though, I think they all are, and it includes liberal arts requirements as well as fashion, so you have to be an excellent student, but that's the story wherever you go. I did my masters there (they offer BA and MA programs), and now I am at the couture school in Paris, so I've had opportunities to compare Drexel with other schools (Chambre Syndicale, ESMOD, Studio Bercot), and it is definately a world-class program.

Berkeley College of New York Fashion Marketing Management program is well respected as well and it's a lot cheaper...a whole lot cheaper.
