"Permanent" Trends?

I don't think there are any trends that will last forever... There are classics that'll be around for decades, maybe even longer, but trends aren't that long-lived.

I beg to differ .. there was a point (70's) when everyone SWORE that denim would be trend ... and look 30 + years later ... it stays in power ... so far I think this is the only "exception to the rule" ...

^that reminds me of an article from 19...63 or something that i read, it said that miniskirts were a trend that wouldnt last more than 2 years. and even though the lenght of skirts come and go...there's always a miniskirt on the catwalks. :P

i think what tott is trying to say is that there's a moment when a 'trendy' item (such as the miniskirt) has been around for so long that it actually becomes a classic

really? because denim has been around for much longer than 30 years. the denim of the 70s was different than the denim of the 50s, and so on, but denim was pretty much a classic from its begining. The way its worn and its cut has changed countless times, but it has still always remained a classic. I do not think that anyone really has ever disputed that.

Ballerinas. They are already a classical, but I think they will be more present in the future, as very young women who rather used to wear sneakers oder flats in the summer just discovered them, and learned to love them

denim is too broad. We might as well say wool suits or cotton dresses will last forever..

Denim was worn by miners and such ... isnt that its purpose? To last for people who work hard? Then it made it to the young people ... but it has not been forever ... just like -men's- hats

I don't think there's such a thing as permanent trends. If you look back more than 150 years ago, it becomes so obvious.

I think alot more people are adopting the more practical minimalist's wardrobe... combining quality basics with trendy seasonal pieces... and this new way of dressing seems to have become a trend. There is a TFS thread on this somewhere...

As for ballets and skinnies, they will always be my staples as I feel comfortable in them, and I know they look good on me. Kind of like a uniform... In fact, I can never stop buying them:blush:

i agree. fat people had the 90s, now it's our turn!

speak for yourself ... I also suspect that said "fat people" would say they haven't "had" a decade in quite some time now ...

Capri length pants and 3/4 sleeves come to mind as trendy items that re-emerged in the last decade and have now becomne classics.

Second on whoever mentioned long, elegant, "city" shorts. I think you're right on the money.

um, i agree. when i think of 90's...i think of like, alaia and all that other skintight unforgiving stuff. definitely not a friend to the "fat". it's been like forty years since fashion allowed women to have meat on their bones.

anyways, as for trends that will stay around for a while, i'm also going to go with skinny jeans. i'm so sick of bootcut. i really am. they might not be the most universally flattering item, but what is? i hope to wear them for several years to come...

Polos.. are classics IMO. Correct me if I'm wrong (which I probably am!)

for men IMO permanent trends (i.e. classics) are:

navy pinstripe or black 2 pc. suits
plain white button front shirts
dark non-distressed jeans
nice black leather shoes

These also happen to be an integral part of a minimalist's wardrobe. Is it boring to wear only these items exclusively? It can be, but the fun is picking garments that fit the person's body type and/or style. This implies that a plain white button front shirt from one designer is NOT the same as one from another.

I also think age is a factor, this is an overgeneralization but 15-25 year- olds are more likely to experiment with trends. That is when they develop a taste for what they like and will wear for a long period in their lives. I am 24 and still experimenting with my wardrobe but I have bought several pairs of skinny (some super skinny) jeans in the last year and plan to keep them and wear them for a long time. In fact I bought more jeans and trousers in the last year when the skinny trend started than I have in the last 10 years because I love them so much and they were not available before.

To sum it all up I believe trends will always come and go, some people will stick loyally to some and others will keep moving on. As long as people need clothes and seek individuality it'll never stop!

I think skinny jeans are going to be a classic. Maybe not with soccer moms but i think it will be around for at least another decade.

i hope skinny jeans arent going to be classic. i have yet to see one person they look good on (i dont mean to insult anyone here who adores their's, but its what i see)

but i do agree with the people mentioning city shorts. they seem here to stay, and practical for the summer really
