his work/aesthetic has aged terribly, not sure if he'd be a good match for versace as you need a bit of humour for that which he doesn't seem to have
It’s interesting because I think that his work, precisely for Givenchy has aged quite wonderfully. I’m a little bit less convinced by some of his menswear but when I look at his work from 2005 to 2017, for the big part, that woman is still relevant.
I think however that like all the greats, with Riccardo, it only works when he apply the less is more thing. His work at Burberry was sometimes too much of more.
The gimmicky jewelry, the over-design, the unwanted accessories are not adding strength to his work.
That couture dress from spring 2011 is exceptional but the headpiece is nothing more than a gimmick.
But what you are saying about Versace is valid too. More than humor, it’s about fun. I love Riccardo and his work but it’s not fun. It’s sexy, it’s edgy, sometimes too heavy but never fun (which is a paradox because I have had a lot of fun wearing his clothes at parties).
And it’s weird because when you look at his IG, his life seems like a lot of fun!
Maybe it’s also the paradox of designers. Gianni much like Karl or Azzedine didn’t have a quote on quote « fun life ». But their clothes had that playfulness. However, people like YSL or Claude Montana had a lot of fun but that translated in heavy Drama in their work.
