"It’s amusing to kiss a man“
Tele5: How do you cope with the whole hype around your person?
Robert Pattinson: It’s slowly becoming my everyday life. It’s still very stressful and exhausting but at the same time very overwhelming. When you’re standing amongst all these people who scream your name and you’re being dragged to all sides, you sometimes get the feeling, you’re loosing control. It’s a weird, strange feeling, but I’m getting used to it.
But don’t you feel like a superstar? Do you enjoy that?
No, I just look at it as my work. My life isn’t really too different now anyways. I still do the same things as before. The only thing that has changed is that you can’t go everywhere anymore without being recognized. I’m just getting used to that change.
Did you expect this enormous success that came with “twilight” ?
Absolutely not. It was my first American movie. When we started I thought it was a little movie with a tiny-budget and I had no idea it would get this huge. Not even during the shooting. Just when the whole hysteria broke out months after the shoot I realised it would be a hit.
How do you explain the success? Why do people love vampires?
I think it’s more than just a vampire story. It’s a very personal, intimate and unique story. There aren’t many books that portray the life of teenagers as something serious. In most stories teenager come across as rather silly. And that doesn’t happen in “twilight” compared to other books or movies. It shows the life of teenagers without any sort of irony or cynicism and takes their issues and feelings seriously.
You play Edward a sexy vampire…
The director Catherine Hardwicke helped me with that a bit. I had interpreted the character as a very sad person. You know. This guy is over 100 years old and believes there’s no reason for him to exist anymore. He can’t give in to his true instincts and has problems to fit into human life. That’s why I at first played the part in a very depressant way. Catherine told me: ”Don’t do that. You don’t look very attractive.” And she gave me more self-assurance and helped me to see and play the part differently.
Have you already signed on to the following three movies?
For two.
You’re being cast as tragic figures pretty often – first Cedric, now Edward. Why?
Maybe people want to see me suffer (laughs). I don’t know why, but every part that i played had something tragic about it. Those topics are more my cup of tea.
Are you still in contact with Daniel Radcliffe?
Not really. He’s permanently working and I haven’t been in England for almost a year. But we’re good friends and he’s a really cool guy.
In your next movie you play the young Salvador Dali, who was bisexual. Was it difficult for you to play that part?
It was weird and something new to kiss a man in that movie. But it was also amusing (laughs). I wouldn’t call Dali bisexual, he was rather asexual, full of neuroses considering sex. He was a very contradictory person, both in his sexuality as well as in all his emotions.
Why did you take that part? Did you want get away from your image as teen-idol?
I already shot the dali-movie before “Twilight”. I don’t try to get away from any image or GET one. I played the part because I thought the script was interesting. I wasn’t thinking about the image or generally about the future.
There was a lot of buzz when you were announced to play Edward. Many fans thought you were the wrong choice. How did that feel?
I had kind of seen that coming. People have certain conceptions and ideas. Many saw Edward as the perfect man and everybody has a different image of how the perfect man should be. In the end you can’t please everybody and that’s why I didn’t bother about it too much and just did my job.
Why have you been chosen?
Catherine and Kristen told me that i didn’t try to portray Edward as self-assured, strong hero during the audition. I tried to play him as a desperate, broken person. That’s how I perceived him. And that may be the reason.
You also recorded two songs for the movie that are on the soundtrack. Do you aspire a career as a rock star?
Not anymore. I wrote the songs about a year ago together with a friend. Back then i planned to quit acting and become a musician. Then came the dali-film and shortly after that “twilight” which was a huge success. I think I will go on being an actor and give up the childhood-dream of being a musician for now.
