So You Want to Become a Model? (PLEASE READ POST #1 BEFORE POSTING)

Miranda Kerr and Gemma Ward participated in model competitions, I don't think they were scouted on the streets either? I think....

I think Gemma ward was in the audience for a model competition, but it was one of her friends who she was supporting in the actual competition, not Gemma, but she was scouted in the audience :woot:

Tristan may I ask who you work for and where? Is 24 really too old to get back into modelling if that person looks 17? Also are eurasians in?

I work for NeXt Canada's Toronto toronto office.

On getting back into modelling, 24 is a fine time to get back in. Eurasians are always in demand, especially in asian markets. Where do you live?

Measuring? I'm represented by two agencies and have only been measured once and that was going to do a job in Stockholm but couldn't be there for the casting. Eventhough I'm 180cm my agency told the designer I was going to work for that I'm 183, which is mor or less the minimum in the industry.

Agencies and designers care less about how the tall you all. All they care about is that you meet the required minimum. If you lie they'll notice it instantly when you stand before their eyes or when you are standing along side other models. If you have alot of presence you might be able to get jobs eventhough you are 1-3cm short. I've managed to get several jobs, despite my height.

As for business cards, you should always look up the name of the agency on the internet. Just by looking at their website and the models they are represent you will within 5 seconds know if it is a serious agency or not. What you want to be represented by is a major agency which has contacts with famous brands, rather than a lousy agency which will at the most get you a job for the local new paper.

183cm is not the minimum requirement in the industry at all. Most runway models don't even match that.

yeah no kidding, a lot of people are not that tall and still are runway models...

^^ of course height matters. There are certainly men and women that are under height, but it's really hard to do anything besides beauty and some print, if your a little shorter. The exception would be if you're really young and still growing, or if you have an amazing face that beauty clients will book repeatedely.

These web sites for models are not anything to do with what is considered legitimate modeling. If you wish to be a fashion model, you need a real agency in the right city who has clients that hire and pay models well ... not a profile on a web site for amatuer, aspiring and web models.

This type of modeling called "web modeling" and some people are successful at it ... but it's very dangerous and somewhat sleazy.

Anyone can put up a site and call themself a model on these sites. And anyone can call themselves a photographer, producer, agent ... whatever. No one verifies anything ... and many people are not what they say they are. So these sort of sites are a haven for predators and weirdos.

But more than anything, it's a place for people who can't get into legit modeling because they don't have what it takes and for photographers who are really little more than amateurs, if that. Photographers who are just starting out will sometimes test with these models, but I rarely see any model on there that is strong enough with ther right stats and look for building a professional portfolio for a photographer... so any shooter that is looking to go pro, needs to get away from these sites as soon as possible and start testing with agency models.

Some web models make some money on GWC's (guys with cameras), by charging them to shoot them ... but it usually entails some nudity.

Get a reputable agency or if you can't ... you may have to face the fact that you don't have what it takes. Resorting to trying to break into modeling though these sort of sites won't help you get "discovered". Legit agents and clients don't shop for models here.

^ Exactly, and we are not model scouts or agents so even if we say yes, that doesn't mean you will get in. Just send you photos and details to model agencies and they will tell you or even better walk into agencies and ask them...

While I modelled I know people who worked in agencies always laughed at pics sent to them by girls who aspired to work in this business. I always thought that was really cruel of them.

^ Yup, it's a cruel world. I heard of an male agent getting pics of naked girls wanting to be models..arghh!!

geeeze , i thought it was appropriate being that this thread is titled "so you want to be a model' i definately misunderstood....

though the information is very much appreciated on my part, i'm certain it's not my thing at all , i just figured i'd give it shot...after all i would probably spend much more time on models.com (if it was my thing) as opposed to TFS...whatever back to what's important

^I remember reading that Hana's sister submitted her pictures to an agency...but then I also heard that she sent them in herself, so who knows?

Agents do have a better track record for finding successes by scouting just because they choose who to approach. On the other hand, at an open call ANYONE (seriously though, anyone! ) can come in. You might see 100 girls at an open call and only one has potential, but if you're scouting you could 'see' hundreds of girls and get the same result.

My advice to anyone who really wants to model is to be proactive, don't just hang around where you think a scout will be;)

Hana shopped her pictures around to several agencies before being signed to Glamour Model Management in Prague. I've heard one agent talking about how she passed on Hana with no regret, which I think is a little silly since she's making her agent pretty rich now. The mother agency get's 3% of everything, right?

By the way, off topic but Hana is really tall (she seemed about 6'1" when I met her) while other models are suprisingly short. I think Sasha Pivovara must be the shortest model working today and she's working really, really well. So if you're 5'6"-5'7", don't give up hope. Send your photos in and fudge your height until they see you. If they like you it won't matter that much.

You've just got to be extra skinny then to keep everything proportioned.

Very good point. I know quite alot of girls who are trying to break into the world of modeeling eventhough they clearly don't have the "high fashion" looks which are neccessary in order to get hired by premium brands.
A friend of mine seem to have some problem with her selfasteem and has during the latest year evolved into a new person focusing on almost nothing but modelling. She has taken several pictures with freelance photographers she found on the net but non of the pictures won't get her represented by Sweden's top agencies. The hardest thing is telling these people that they can't become high fashion models. Some people have difficulties with accepting that modeling just like other professions in life aren't meant to be for everyone.

My biggest tips is to visit or send pictures to the top 3-5 reputable(gets top clients and send models off to Italy, Paris och the UK) and if can't get anyone of them to accept you then just give it up move on in life.

Off course you shouldn't give up quickly but don't sweat it. Pursuing a career in modeling with no success will tare on you mentally. Especially for girls since the competition is so intense. I can tell you that more than 80-% of the women we have seen on the runways this year won't even be on the scene in three years. The majority of a careers in modelling are very short lifed
