Thankyou so much for your advice guys. The fact is I dont particularly want to change agencies and I dont need the money -it is more to do with my obsession about the clothes that come out each season and girls like Eugenia V and Ali Turner (Thanks for the grounding advice model_mom which was needed after my brain was blasted about 10 miles above the atmosphere! Cambridge is my priority and I wont forget I fought tooth and nail to get there. I was just wondering a couple of things -how tall is Ali and is there anything she regrets about the business?)

Esmerelda -thanks for the advice about confidence. It made me remember how annoying the overly self-deprecating models on ANTM are!

Is there anything in particular someone can do to get noticed -is it about the portfolio and sending it to the right people or meeting those people?

In answer to Ali's height she's 5'10. The one thing we would have done different if we could change it was for Ali to stay in school. She ended up going back this past fall but it's hard to fit back in when you've been away for a year and a half. I also wish Ali had stayed with Ford Chicago till she was older instead of being sent to Paris during show season when she was 15. She was too young to do the shows. We stayed a month before I decided it was time to come home. She was so depressed and sad while we were there and I will never forgive myself for putting her through that. She had much better luck when she was in New York and has a wonderful agent. She graduates in May and then she can decide for herself if she wants to model again.

A big part of the modeling business is who you know or what photographer takes a liking to you. I wish you luck in whatever you decide to do.

Calling all Models & Fashion employees

So, I have a photographer who is doing a 4 day shoot in the Bahamas, it is an 18 page swimsuit editorial.
He wants to book me - which is great....but I have concerns.
He seems like a dinkum photographer, he has a good portfolio (not GREAT, but good for Miami), he contacted my agency rather than going directly to me (good fashion manners) and the pay is good.
So what are the concerns? Well:

1.) It is an 18 page editorial - that is very long for swimsuits? What sort of mag is it?!?!
2.) We are to be flown to the Bahamas on a Private air charter - what EDITORIAL client pays to get 4 models on a private plane to the bahamas?? The whole package must be costing the client over 10G at least! Again, what editorial can pay that...?
3.) He hasn't given me alot of info (but I will probably get it from my booker)


What do you guys think? Does this sound legit?

Just the fact that he went through your agency sounds good. If you have any questions or concerns you should ask your agent about them. Make sure you have contact numbers to give someone about where you will be. Another good thing is that four girls are going . How safe is that!!! Is the pay good? It sounds like a pretty good deal to me. Ali flew to Honduras when she was 16 with a stylist. She staYed at a nice place and had a great time It was for D magazine. She wasn't paid real well but she got to work with horses which she loved. TAKE A CHANCE IT SOUNDS LIKE FUN.

My first thought was 18 PAGES?!! But if there are 4 models maybe it's a super-duper swimsuit extravaganza? Your agency should be provided with a copy of the magazine, or at the very least website links etc. in order that it's of the standard you're used to working to. There's a swimwear shoot and there's a swimwear shoot...

If it's through your agency there shouldn't be anything to worry about though - just be sure to be safe...you'll have 3 other models, stylist, hair/make-up so even if the photographer is a bit you'll be in safe hands with them...above all enjoy yourself! Bahamas? I'mvery jealous!!

You are right, I have myself flown all the way to thailand on less secure ground but since I have grown older I have grown paranoid.

As long as the magazine is legit - what is it? And who is the photographer? The thing to remember is that your agency would never let you do a job that is unsafe or would jeapordize your career. So assuming you voice your concerns with them and they assure it is ok - go and enjoy it!

Editorials are not made to make models rich. Its to get them good tears - experience - exposure. But that does not mean the magazines shooting the editorials arent rich. They have budgets for shoots - the more amazing the shoot - the better reaction - the better reaction they receive - the more sales.

No there are special Alexander Technique practicioners because it is its own school of thought. I had it booked for Monday but I have a shoot instead. G-d the dilemmas in life...not!! I am sure there are many people in Toronto who do it

i've been given a few cards from some agency's and am considering pursuing but would like to first know what i'm getting myself into (timewise - im a student, financially, etc.). could anyone tell me about mode (calgary), lizbell(vancouver), and giovanni (toronto). i understand these are all canadian agency so perhaps no one has heard of them. i am really quite ignorant when it comes to the whole fashion industry, but anyone has suggestions/input, would be greatly appreciated. sorry if im posting in the wrong place.

Hey! Mode, Next, lizbell, and Giovanni are very good agencies which I have had the pleasure of styling their models, as well as seeing them when I'm going to castings (i do double duty, modellin/styling). Giovanni in Toronto, I must say is not as strong as Giovanni in Montreal, the agency in Toronto seems to focus more on their artists than their models. I know many who have recently left the agency I'm with. Other agencies that I reccomend you check out before you sign on anywhere, are Elmer Olsen, Stylus Models, and N.A.M. models in Toronto. Those agencies are a healthy combination of editoral and commercial, while B&M, Ford(TORONTO DIVISION), Elite(TORONTO DIVISION), Sutherland and Velocci, are very commercial. Ford and Elite here don't even compare to the American Ford and Elites, the boutiques pretty much rule here.
