So You Want to Become a Model? (PLEASE READ POST #1 BEFORE POSTING)

Are only models allowed to live in model apartments? It's really intriguing to me, cause I wanna see all that drama unfold in front of me

If there's a chance to live in a model apartment in NYC, lemme know!

yes only models are allowed to be in the model apartments and the opposite sex is forbidden from entering. Even if it's family. Drama happens every once in a blue moon and is quickly snuffed. "Shutup I'm trying to sleep" is about as rowdy as it gets. Also, every agency has their own setups. Some agencies have a sort of "den mother" setup where someone from the agency is paid to maintain the rules and curfews (if they exist) and others are more like college dorm setups with no one to monitor.

^ Really coz in Hong Kong, they mix the models up. Meaning that boys and girls share apartments and sometimes rooms..

How many models are in one apartment?
Who looks after the girls if they´re under 16?

The person was inquiring about NYC model apartments.
--------
as far as how many models share goes.. I've seen 4 beds per room as a typical max, 5 if you count the couch (if you can fit it.) Last place I was at, there were 3 bedrooms.. 2 of the rooms had 2 beds, the larger one had 4 beds and a couch. And then there were 2 more couches in the apartment as well. So.. it could sleep 11. Model apartments vary from agency to agency. Most can be far more cramped than that with bunkbeds and sharing..

Models who are under 16, if they're privileged enough to have a parent come stay with them, that's what happens. Sometimes a girl will come with her mom and they'll share a room at the model apartment if there's the vacancy. Otherwise they stay in hotels with said parent. You wouldn't really know a model's under 16 unless she says something about it though. They're fairly good at not disclosing that sort of thing with others.

Length of Career

From "The Professional's Guide to Modeling":

"The average career span for an editorial fashion model AFTER being signed by a New York agency is six weeks."

So if you are not booked for anything in the first three weeks or so, you are on the edge?

Anyone know stories of how much girls spent (and owed to the agency) if they arrived as signed models and then weren't booked?

Threads?

a) That's totally exagerated, look at Coco Rocha, Gemma Ward, Daria W, anja, alek, Cinti Dicker, Stam, Malgosia and many others.

The span of a models career (after the prerequisite aesthetic appeal) has everything to do with personality and management. A good management company or agency know that the onus is not to just create an editorial star, but to maintain that star and have her successfully cross over into the campaign grid and eventually the catalogue market.

b) The amount of money a girl owes depends on how longs he stays in the city, if she came from another market (like let's say has a mother agent in belgium, and has a good book) then the cost of development won't be as much. Girls and guys who do just editorial usually always carry a debt with them. The money is in the campaign and advertising.

length of career

I think the quote refers to girls who are signed, but who don't catch fire with the clients and don't get jobs. How long can they afford to stay in NY if they are not getting work? It's an expensive city. The meter is running.

Has anyone been tracking the new faces boards to see if the faces disappear completely or get moved to the women's boards?

Some new faces aren't even really in NY yet, they are kids signed like pro sport draft picks who go to college while they grow (but the girls here are in high school). So I guess you can't count them yet; it is not costing them to live in NY.

Or is this still wrong?

I think you are right about that some of the new faces aren't even in NY yet. I believe a lot of the models on the board do not live in NY....they just come and go.

^that's right paws! We always try to keep the model account as low as possible.

Length of Career

If you are IN NY to go to castings (many per day) how often does it happen that someone just doesn't get work there?

I guess they can try again later, or go to a foreign market for a while. Or go to college for a while.

It's all gamble, there are no guarantees. Some girls come for one season of castings and are never heard from again. Some are held over for the following season if they made a small splash the first season. Some go home wait a few years and give it a second try and hit it big (Daria W.) Some hit it big the first try and are seen everywhere and then a few seasons later fade away...and only a very few lucky ones hang in there and become top models.

Girls aren't developed slowly like they were in the past and given time to work their way up. Its in the door, make the round of clients and photographers, impress the right person and you're in....every model has that dream but for most of them....thats all it is.

What would you do?

I hope this is the right place to post this message. I'm still fairly new to TFS, and trying to figure things out. I have been modeling for two years, I did have an agency representing me for a short period, but didn't like them much. I'm already old, 24, but would still like to work. I'm not sure what it is that draws me to modeling so much. I guess I just want to make it happen, because I decided that I wanted to make it a goal. I live in the midwest, and am prepared to move after May next year to any larger city. I have traveled a lot, and lived independently for most of my life. *****************I don't know what to do anymore. I'm not sure if I should continue looking for representation, or give up and find another dream. ***************** I just wonder if I'm not dedicating time and energy to something that is futile. Any advice?
