So You Want to Become a Model? (PLEASE READ POST #1 BEFORE POSTING)

Just thought I would share a funny thing that happened today,
I went to a casting today and because it was to meet a casting director, I naturally found myself at a cattle call with about 50 models waiting before me. The casting director would come out of this room to tell each model to come in when it was their turn. At one point that he sticks his head out, he sees one model who just came into the waiting area, socializing with another, and carrying her tiny chihuahua in one of her hands. He catches her attention and says in the most disgusted voice you could imagine "You brought your dog to my casting?" She didn't say anything and he just pointed away and said "get out." And then he went on saying a few things about how utterly disrespectful, inconsiderate and unprofessional those models are. "You're not celebrities, you're models."
(I guess that could be considered good or bad.. lol)
So I guess for those aspiring to be or already are models with dogs, leave the pups at home.

By "escorts"I was mainly referring to those internet "models" who want to bring their b/f etc. The problem is that some Internet modeling websites are popular and help spreading misconceptions, those can sort of "spoil" a girl wou'd have potential for real life modeling.

That's funny, and coincidental, because just the other day I heard a story about a model bringing her dog to a shoot she did, and how unprofessional she was about it!

And yeah, if you're with somebody, definetaly make them wait outside for you. Having someone with you is distracting and takes the focus off of the important issue at hand - your modeling.

That shouldn't have been a difficult problem to solve. One call to her agency, replace her, and that should be the end of it.

^^that's usually easier said than done. There's a long line of people for the clients to go through to approve a model for a job.

I'm just wondering - for guys - what is the ideal model? Like a Hedi-Slimane-boy-thin look or a muscled look?

And what do you think is the standard weight of a male model and a female model? (for comparison)

I know more about female modelling, but I know guys shouldn't be to muscular, more with small hips and a bit feminine. hope this helps at least a little bit

Its just I read this really interesting article about what a modelling (in an Australian newspaper called the Age) and they also write about male models and that the most successfuly/desired models are those very masculine, 20-30 something MEN.

I find this really innacurate just looking at the trends in Milan and Paris where the boys look quite emmaciated!

What does everyone think about this?

I think this has to do with what type of modelling the male is doing. If they're doing the majority of the high end designer runways and high end publications, they will be expected to be thinner. Of course there are also the specific brands that generally ask for the more masculine types, ie D&G, Dsquared, etc, but as per higher end modelling (which won't pay as much) it is more likely going to be a thinner male. For fragrance campaigns, and more commercial work like mainstream campaigns and catalogues, the more muscular male is going to be the one that gets the jobs which most likely pays more.

Hi all, i have never posted in this thread before but i just happened to think of it all of a sudden this morning. May i ask some advise? I have just finished university and currently wondering which direction to go in job-wise. I have been told a number of time over the past few years that i should try out modelling. However with university and the work i had never really found the time. But during the last few months of university i started to think about what i am going to do once i had finsihed and the thought was scary however i had been invited to a LV party so i was speanding the day in London. As my train arrived around lunch time i was earily to meet a friend. So i decided to vist an agency. (i had to get the address from an internet cafe!) and then made may way as it said on there website that they had walk-ins all day. As i arrived the lady was looking at me from all angles and said that i have a more commertial look and that agency was more editorial, she also said i was a little short. She did give me a list and pointed out some other agencys to try. However i know the fact that there is no halm in trying however i am the sort of person who feels if it is ment to be it will be. So the fact that the lady was like try these places made me feel that maybe it is not the way for my future to go. Could an body clear up for me what commerial and editorial are? And also do you guys think it would be a good idea to try other agencys? or just move on? sorry for the long post but it has been on my mind for a while and i realy dont know who else to ask.

That is a tricky one - being available for castings and bookings while balancing a school schedule is not easy. If your agency sees real potential they make work around your school schedule but you WILL NOT be making decent money due to your availability unless you are extremely lucky. It can be done but it will be hard to be committed to both your college studies and a budding modeling career. Good luck!

There's no harm in trying other agencies since you're out of school and if they give you other suggestions, even better. Editorial modelling is the high end work like L'uomo Vogue, Vogue Hommes International, 10 Men, V man, and runways. Commercial modelling is very broad, can be catalogue work, etc, or campaigns for more commercial brands. Commercial modelling can pay well

The best way to get the definitive answer about your modelling potential is to go to a few more open calls.

It doesn't matter what they say after "no". Just ignore it. If four or five agencies say no, move on to something else.

Is there a person here who works with male models? I have never been a model but some of my friends have suggested it. My weight & height should be alright (tall&thin) but maybe someone could check out my face.

There's info back in this thread about male model requirements. Iif you use the search, and just type "male" and specify this forum you should come up with a bunch of posts ... or just read though it ... uh, very very long!

Just as we tell all the girls, you really need to go to open calls to find out if you have the "look" they want. It varies from agency to agency and day to day, depending on what their clients are looking for.

You have not done this, but do be aware that we do not allow aspiring models to post personal stats or pictures in this thread for critique. But, you certainly are welcome to ask someone to PM you and exchange the infromation privately.

Hey, im just after getting back from living in dublin, ireland for the past 4 months. I was spotted on my like second last week there by an agency who also got me to have a few snaps taken, no make-up or hair, just to see how i looked in snaps. Im back living in toronto now for university, was just goin to put up a few of my snaps that were taken to see if its even worth me goin into a half decent agency in toronto!!! take a look and comm comment plz
