So You Want to Become a Model? (PLEASE READ POST #1 BEFORE POSTING)

Posting personal information about oneself on line is dangerous, and even more so for aspiring models. We have a lot of minors who have been approached by less than legit people ... and it can cost them serious money and possibly their lives. Therefore, we just don't allow critiques for aspiring models anywhere on tFS.


Critiques in forums like these are rarely helpful at all, anyway .... because these are not the people who make the decisisions. Any aspiring model must present themselves to booking agents at numerous modeling agencies to determine whether or not they have the "look", the right stats, and what that agency is looking for. That is how it's done ...


You may ask about the minimum standards for modeling (stats) if you need more information. And you may ask about the standards for each of the various types of modeling ... such as runway, commercial, catalog, promotional, plus, fit, etc. And you may ask what type of modeling is available in various cities ... because most cities don't have any "high fashion runway" work... that is found mostly in the fashion capitals ... NY, Paris, Milan.

Thanks, that makes sense. It just feels weird for everything to be at the mercy of booking agencies (I'd like to think that bookers could be kept on their toes by savvy internet posters). Sort of like if (on some other forum) critiques of amateur actors' skills were banned and everyone was referred to some monolithic organization like the Creative Artists Agency.

Bookers are too busy to be nosing around here looking for models. They have thousands of applicants to choose from already ... wannabes who walk in and or send them pictures or that are referred to them. If a girl (or a guy, for that matter) is serious, she'll make herself well known to all the agencies in her city.

there's actually not a real guideline for thights as long as the legs go well with the other part of the body

Cologne is completely correct ... with only one exception: Fit Modeling ... where you have to be measured almost everywhere and must be within a very small range of the client's standard sizing ... and that varies a lot from client to client. So ... there is still no "standard" for thighs or arms or any part other than bust, waist and hips ... and height, of course.

cant find anything on this thread on mother agencies and getting more than one. if you are signed with one small boutique-style modelling agency how can you get another agency for other countries??

1) If your agent introduces your polaroids/tests to an agent from an agency abroad.

2) If an agent from abroad scouts you on-site.

I've been scouted a couple of times before and have been told by my photographer friends that I should try modeling, but the thing is I don't have the best skin. I have a small area on my cheeks that's plagued with hyperpigmentation from acne that I (thankfully) no longer get aside from the occasional zit. My question is, I feel like if I don't attempt to do modeling NOW then I think I'm not gonna have another opportunity. Would they really care about the state of my skin if I have "the look?"

^ Well, if you already got scouted several times - I'd defenitely give it a try Skin is something you can maintain and improve. And, like you said, if you have "the right look" - it shouldn't be limiting your chances too much.

If they like your look they will most likely insist that you start seeing a dermatologist and maybe even wait to sign you until they are assured that your skin problems are taken care of. In modeling, it is very important that it be in the very best condition possible.

Here is why: Time is money to your clients, so taking longer in the makeup chair and keeping a whole crew who is being paid just standing around is not a good thing ...it can cost them thousands of dollars an hour.

Makeup can hide pigmented areas ... so as long as it's not too bad, the makeup artist can deal with it quickly. But, if you have pockmarks and scars ... you will need to get rid of those, because makeup cannot hide them. And it would cost the client even more money in post production photoshopping.

Clients want models with good skin ... for that reason ... money.


So ... yeah .... go in and see some agencies and see what they say. And start to see a dermatologist ASAP to see what he can do to improve your skin.

Hi everyone, i have a concern. I've always wanted to do modeling, but never had the self confidence to really pursue it. However, recently i was scouted to be apart of a campaign. The scout took my polaroid on site and the execs of the company that was doing the campaign chose me out of like 400 + people (including models that were signed to agencies) so i was really stoked about that. Now my question is should i pursue modeling(even though i really want to)? Im 19, ***edited****

Oh, and i also live in Los Angeles. Lastly, what is the best way of going about sending my pictures, thru mail, email, or both?

Best is to go to open calls in L.A. to start with. If they like you, you will know right away. Try some of the better agencies for that like Ford, Wilhelmina, Click ... they all have offices in L.A.

Ok thank you very much!! And im so sorry about posting that, i'll be more careful next time and read the first post . But i will do that, I'll go to some open calls and see what happens. Everyone keep your fingers crossed for me.
