:magic: can't believe i'm already 1/4ths through the challenge (i did set my goals to only a hundred since i don't have much time to expend watching movies) but this whole activity has been very good training so far (for a movie marathon ), i'm slogging my way with new found determination through the backlog of films i've postponed and put off for the last few months, seeing that i had no excellent reason to push myself before, but i had no idea this whole challenge thing would prove that effective as to inspire me to exert more effort into watching more effing movies :argg:

i too didn't think the movie was Best Picture material but it was quite decent enough, nice to see the usual gauche Clooney play someone sensitive, almost vulnerable for once.. the story dragged a little here and there but overall i like how this movie put its own spin in the dysfunctional broken family type. it almost makes for an enjoyable family movie, if you take out the cursing  and Shailene Woodley, what an eyecandy! :crush: (asides from being a good actress :P) she reminds me so much of Jac for some reason.

I don't understand how you can make a film about Tatcher without talking politics... I felt like it was more the story of an old lady... dealing with loss and remembering the past. I don't know, the quick flashbacks about things so important left me uncomfortable. Meryl Streep is unbelievable though, no doubt she deserves an oscar...

Just saw The Descendants as well. Movie #12. I was disappointed. Way too much hype over this film and Shailene's performance (well at least the hype over Shailene was justified). The same exact thing happened with Up in the Air when that movie came out -- I think it was 2009. Just so much hype over both the film and George -- and then by the time awards season rolled around it didn't amount to much. So at least, this time, I'm happy for George that the hype for this movie sustained.

But I really didn't get the hype! Shailene was great, and some of the bit characters were great. I wish we had more time with some of the smaller characters, like Matthew Lillard's and Rob Huebel's. I liked the character of Sid. But I was certainly not blown away by this movie! It left me cold. Maybe I'd appreciate the book better. Like with The Help, I'd give this movie a 3 out of 5. A movie with good performances, but the actual story did not move me.

I don't understand how you can make a film about Thatcher without talking politics... I felt like it was more the story of an old lady... dealing with loss and remembering the past. I've heard the same complaint about The Iron Lady, by people who haven't even seen it yet. It's too bad. I guess to learn more about Thatcher I'd have to watch a documentary or just read up on her. I do adore Meryl in everything she does, though.

I completely agree!! I watched it in november 2011 and I was very disappointed, but I was think over it months after. Maybe I expected too much from this movie but I didn't like it at all. I don't get why people call it a masterpiece.

^haha, guys, me too. Well, actually I can't say I didn't like it, but I expected something 'wow'.
