I didn't like the last one. The story is good, it could have been a great film... The only thing I save are Kate Bosworth and Ezra Miller characters and the way they play them.

^ People already seem to be following that rule very well. It's also never really been a big problem in the book challenge threads in my opinion. I personally think that too many rules is a turn off; the challenge is fun and caters well to the individual before all these rules come in.

I agree . For me this thread is just a way to make myself watch these 100 movies. I feel more obliged to do so, if I have somewhere to post my list. And I see that as a good thing. With that said I do enjoy reading other people's list and hear about the movies. I just don't want rules on what to watch or how to post my list etc. except if it bothers anyone.

For inspiration: Today the french director François Truffaut would have been 80 years old. One of the movies he directed was The 400 Blows (1959). I'll try to watch at least one of his movies today.

I think the suggestions for themes etc are great, and people can either participate in those themes or not at their discretion...
or tailor the theme to what is accessible to them..

for instance, someone suggested foreign film oscar submissions...
i think that's a great idea...
but if you don't have access, or if it would be easier for you to look for foreign submissions from past years then i would say go for that...
or if foreign films don't interest you then don't bother following that theme.

i think the thread is just a nice way to get movie suggestions and a discussion going about the types of films we like, how we choose what we're watching... etc
that's the sort of thing we've been doing in the book challenge thread and it seems to work well.

you sort of work on your own challenge but discuss in the thread how it's going and talk to each other about what you're taking in... the good, the bad, the ugly etc.

I´m busy marathoning a tv show atm but when I´m done I want to watch every movie -if I can get them- that´s nominated for an Oscar, either the movie or its actors. That´s my challenge for february

I'm thinking of making a personal challenge [within this challenge] by watching the entire filmography of a classic filmmaker, and by time order (starting by the first film up to his/her last one). I've actually been toying with the idea since last year but this year seems perfect for it. At first I thought of Buñuel, but he made 32 films and some of them need like days of meditation.. or therapy . I'm also liking the idea of finally pushing myself into the entire body of work of Fellini, or Tarkovsky (who's conveniently only directed 11 films ).

Any recommendations or experiences on something like this?

^I've thought about doing something similar. However one of my qualms about doing such a thing is I don't think I'd be able to get all the works of one director/actor/actress. I have to rely quite a bit on netflix (especially instant streaming) and I can't afford to buy a ton of dvd's. But this might just be something that just relates to me...idk. I would love to watch the films of one person (or what if you watched the films of one film company?) but for me, at least at the moment, it probably isn't realistic. However, I really want someone else to try this, and tell me how it goes! Then maybe I'll get up the courage to do this challenge!

I love the idea of watching the films of one filmmaker or actor...
I go through phases (this has mostly happened with actresses in more recent years) where I feel like I end up watching a bunch of Meryl Streep films, or Penelope Cruz (the good Spanish stuff)...

I would love to carve out some time and watch some of the big classics that I haven't gotten around to...
whichever Hitchcock films I haven't seen, and tons more that are slipping my mind at the moment.

I tried that last year with Magic Hour Films, and failed , particularly for what you mention, the lack of availability.. it's just too contemporary, undistributed.. it takes an extensive quest to find each documentary they've produced, so I gave up.

It is much easier with classic filmmakers I assume.. or hope!.. but then I rely a lot on free (admittedly pirate) sites.

I think for trying to finish someone's entire filmography it's easier to stick to modern actors/directors, just because their films are easier to access. I mean, good luck to someone who wants to find and watch all the John Ford films ever directed.

A good tip for this though would be to keep an eye on TCM (if you get it), because they devote months to certain actors. Last October was Buster Keaton month and thanks to my DVR I've seen most of his shorts and silent movies. Every August they also dedicate one day to a star and just air their movies on that day, and the actors they choose from are quite diverse so it's not just the big name stars.

On TCM right now they're doing their annual 31 Days of Oscar, so all the movies are either winners or nominees.

And if you don't want to buy movies, make sure to check out your local library and see what they have. My local library has almost all of the dvds in the Criterion Collection, so I don't have to pay much to get the more rare movies they have.

Oh my, just looked up his filmography (62 films ).

I thought of doing that with Anthony Minghella last year, but somewhere I lost my interest. I might give it another try this year.

What I find interesting about a classic filmmaker (say, someone that was at his peak in the 60s/70s) is that you get to place their work in history and the more extensive it is, the easier you notice his personal style/touch and obviously his impact on cinema.. the way he perceived current events and film-making. I don't know. I find it enriching, and I do love stupid challenges like that , I wouldn't be as crazy as trying to watch someone's 60-film filmography in one year but pushing myself to watch his first 10 films for example would be quite the accomplishment.

I'm in. Though so far this year I've mostly seen ´no-brainer, hangover´ kind of movies due to exams and well, hangovers But I would like to start watching more movies again like I did years ago

I actually wanted to watch all of Lars von Trier and Woody Allen's works at some point, so I started collecting, meaning I have A LOT of what they have made, but I never really got around to watching most of it. Maybe that should be one of my own personal challanges this year.. That and actually watch the movies I own which I've never seen.

Chrissy, I do that too, I had a phase just around Christmas where I watched a bunch of stuff with Kristin Scott Thomas.

I think that I am going to use this challenge for Japanese directors though, because I just can't get into Japanese film for some reason. So maybe I'll try to watch like 5 by Kurosawa, 5 by Ozu, etc. Just to get my foot in the water.

I also need to work on my Fellini, I've only seen two of his movies.
