The 4-5 piece French wardrobe #6

^That is very possible what I observed. It has been a year since I looked at it, and to be honest, I don't think I made it through all the threads:lol: That said, the dynamic is likely to change as different people enter the mix;) But I am to tired to analyse... Too much material to study:D

I found my december item!! No, no snowboots yet, but that might still happen during the sales... But I had a 25% discount at NAP and this dress was low stock. I had it on my ultimate wishlist for months now and always hoped I could grap it during sales. I love winter dresses and there are always only few out there that look right for me.

The dress arrived today and it's gorgeous... Strangely I recently tend to buy more classic, less colorful items. I still love strong colors, but right now it feels as if I can need some neutral, classic items. I'm sure there will yellow times again ;-)

^ Love the plaid ... funny that you aren't a skirt person, but this is a top/skirt effect dress ;)

My new jacket ... this is fleece, but the reviews indicate it's convincing as a fake fur ... hmmm. This is meant to keep me warm while walking, and hopefully also be useful for real life as well ... it has a wind-stop lining. I sized up per the advice of the reviews, so hopefully I ordered the right one.

Curious on your new jacket!

You are right about the skirt effect. Well, I must say I've been wearing the two skirts I own more often in recent weeks. With this dress I like how it falls. I think if I were to wear a real sweater with a real skirt in this look. It probably would look a bit bulkier. I'm petite and always pay attention that I don't add too much bulk.

I'm was wearing the dress today at work and it felt great!

How curious? :) The sizing or the fur part? I think this jacket is a lot more versatile than the down one I was looking at ... but, no hood. So I'll probably need something for my ears. If so, will probably find something on Etsy. The sleeves bell, so I'll be able to wear my regular leather gloves (or my long red knit ones).

Very handily, Patagonia gives you a chance to pin your order to Pinterest at order completion, so I did ;)

Glad you're enjoying the dress. I understand what you're saying about streamlining ... I'm so used to wearing layers of separates that it doesn't bother me ;)

PS Just counted, and the jacket is piece #5 for the season, assuming I'm counting my walking shoes. It's possible I may need to get a pair of extra-warm pants as well for walking. Have some Patagonia ones pinned. Waiting to see how my legs feel ...

@Red: It is funny, when I saw the dress pinned to your wardrobe board I actually thought that it might be an older piece that you had had for a long time, since it is a bit different from what you normally buy. I love it though! The plaid is gorgeus.

@Ta-ta: Can't wait to hear how you'll like that jacket. You will be the chic'est woman out there walking ;)

I have fallen head over heels in love with a By Malene Birger dress. I think it would be a great LBD for both parties and every day (worn with boots and a leather jacket or my long, grey cardigan). I do in no way need it, so I am hoping the feeling will wear of in a couple of days. I will wait for sales if I am going to get i though, I think.

Betinapple: The dress looks beautiful! Is there some glitter in the fabric or is that the picture?

About my dress: Funnily enough, it feels perfectly me even if it's somewhat different. In general, my fall / winter wardrobe is often a bit more "classic" than my summer wardrobe. For summer, I already have my eyes on a yellow top, so I guess I'm not completely moving away from who I was. But I'm evolving ;)

Yes, it has a metallic thread in the fabric. I love how looking at the cut it could be just any little black dress but the fabric adds a little something. I have a black jersey dress in the same cut that I wear constantly.

I DO think that your new dress is very you despite the lack of colour, and I think that both evolving and having different preferences for summer and winter is completely normal and to be expected.

Ooh, I really like the jacket, ta-ta!

betina, lovely dress, in that picture it almost reminds me of space/sky at night with lots of stars. :flower:

I already mentioned many times that I was looking for leather boots. I found these in sale. The spurs are removeable thank god. What do you think?

Does anyone have a list of essentials of a french wardrobe? Can anyone list those products for me: leather boots, ballerinas etc etc.

There isn't an official list of essentials... It depends completely in your lifestyle and figure and personal preference. The "typical" French items are often claimed to be the Breton, ballerinas, trench and beret. I wouldn't even claim that leather boots are essential to a "french" wardrobe. None of the items mentioned are essential, really.

You can find several fun lists online, though.

Essentials List:
Something to cover your body
Something to keep you warm
Something to protect your feet
Something to keep your stuff in

You'll have to narrow it down depending on your lifestyle, figure and taste;)

Ok, what is your personal list? Mine is:
- Trenchcoat
- Wool coat
- Leather boots
- Ankle (dicker boots)
- Ballerinas
- Breton shirt
- Cashmere sweaters (navy and grey)
- White blouse
- Grey jeans
- Black jeans
- Black wool trousers
- Leather gloves
- Breton shirt
- Tees (black and white)
- French cami
- Taupe cardigan
- Blazer (black/navy)
- Golden watch
- Golden coin
- Day bag

But even though this is a long list. I still find my wardrobe boring. Thats why I wanted to ask what u should add to this. My wardrobe is now so colourless and boring if it would be completed with this list.

This is probably your version of a capsule wardrobe. You add color and interest by adding statement pieces and other pieces that you love, but aren't "basic".

I am in the process of adding color to my drab winter wardrobe too, so I know how you feel about the lack of color;)

When I see those lists of essential items, it often makes me want to scream ;) I don't have an LBD, haven't had a navy blazer in years, no camelhair (though it's lovely), etc.

I also try to buy a mix of fun/statement items and practical/basic items each season. The purpose of that is really to make me happy, but it also prevents my wardrobe from ever getting boring ;)

This season I've bought (you can see all this on Pinterest--key items *) ...

  • Leopard pumps *
  • Vintage ribbon to have my lambskin bag repaired (this turned out great btw)
  • Dusty pink ruched wallet
  • Black Mary Jane walking shoes *
  • Ivory fleece jacket *
  • Black/ivory polka-dot blouse *
  • Grey leopard sweater *
So really the only strictly basic item was the walking shoes, but the jacket will function as a basic as well. You can see that I made sure that each item had some interest to it.

I find that a really effective way to think about what you need is to use your wardrobe and find actual holes in it ... items you need to get dressed to do things you actually want to do. Those lists are someone else's theory about what should be in a closet, and their theory may not have anything to do with you.

The idea here is to pare it back to the essentials. In my view, other people's theories are essential for me only if they really add value ;)

I love that even though my style is minimalistic, it is nowhere near the list of essentials Trenchcoat posted. It would feel very forced for me to incorporate things like beige/camel trenchcoat, any kind of jeans, ballet flats or boots into my wardrobe, because I had never been wearing those things or wanting them.

Betina, as you already have a similar black dress and wearing it a lot, I think this sparkly little thing would come in handy for you, especially during holidays. :flower:

I was celebrating my 25th birthday this weekend and among other things I got 2 items from my list, with the ring from my boyfriend being the most covetable gift. :woot::blush:

^ Happy birthday!! Glad you're happy with your gifts!

Hey, I seem to recall your buying a trench recently ... Was it black? I thought it was light-colored ... am I smoking something??

I definitely wear ballets, but I haven't worn boots in years because the climate here is so mild. I like them, but they're non-essential for me. I wear jeans and jean-cut pants, but never a traditional blue jean as I just don't like them. So there you have a whole list of 'essential items' I live without ;)

PS Forgot to mention, ordered this weekend from Etsy a cable-knit headwrap (pinned). It will be custom-made for me in variegated purple alpaca yarn, slightly larger than usual to accommodate either my big head or my outsize brain :stuart:

Thank you! ^_^ And yes, the trench is black, bought in August.

 I have a big head too, every hat is too small for me, but this never represented a problem since I don't like wearing them (bad-hair-days-all-winter) so I am wearing my ear cuffs during the coldest season. Don't care if I look funny as long as they keep me warm.

Btw, I will soon have to ban myself from Etsy, there are more and more things I like there.
