The 4-5 piece French wardrobe #6

Ah-ha!! So that's the crux of the matter. Very wise.

I started out like that when I came to Paris in two suitcases with a perfectly pared-down (non-black) capsule wardrobe...but then I wore out my favorite clothes faster than I would have liked, and things got out of hand...

Was it faster than you thought was reasonable? Sometimes I take it as input to my shopping process ... other times, when I look at how much I wore things, I think it was fine. Other times, I'm lucky & things really last. I've had my midi black wool crepe skirt for many years now.

I used to have this cute scotty dog doormat, and a friend commented that it would make a great collector's item someday & I should stop using it at that moment so that it could be one. I probably looked at her like she was nuts  Umm ... it's my doormat. I'll use it until it wears out, and then I'll buy another cute one

I definitely still miss some of my favorite things. But I think, so much better to wear them, love them, and then miss them than to stare at them hanging in the closet & be afraid to wear them. My closet is not a museum. Styles change, bodies change ... seize the day :woot:

I used to be very careful with wearing my favorite things, too... Until I realized that if you don't wear them when you like them, you might never wear them. Some things were suddenly not right for my body type anymore or they somehow looked dated or just not right after years in my closet. Nowadays I really enjoy wearing my best stuff. Since I started following this thread I've bought less but better quality. Since I only buy one piece a month I make sure it's as good as it gets. And suddenly I feel like I have a wardrobe full with favorite pieces. That makes me less afraid of wearing one to death... Because I know you have to enjoy it as long as it makes you feel great, even if that might mean you ruin it. But the feeling that a favorite piece gives you is definitely worth it!

I just finished my last exam and finaly have some time to think about my wardrobe again().

I've decided to return and gift some of the items I ordered. I bought a black corduroy Noa Noa skirt, but the belt loops were placed oddly and it made the entire skirt feel of balance. The length and shape was great, but I keept tugging at it and trying to turn it around to "make it right", but it was impossible! Took me ages to figure out it was because the belt loops were oddly placed...

I also decided to give a merino wool sweater I ordered away. The cut wasn't good on me, but I know someone who would look great in it.

This means I have only bought 4 items this far. * so proud *
- Wool coat
- Woll Scarf
- Cashmere sweater
- Baggu bag

I really like my new burgundy sweater, but I really miss having a very fitted sweater. It needs to be quite thin, yet warm (as it is winter...). Does anyone have any fabric combinations to suggest? I am thinking something with silk/cashmere, maybe some viscose.

eizhowa, congrats on finishing your exams, I know the relief  Would it be possible to remove the offending belt loops and/or sew them into different spots? As for sweaters, how about alpaca or merino wool? Both are warm, but tend to be a bit more durable than cashmere, so it's safer to get thinner knits.

Speaking of... I have just received 3 sweaters from Wrap London. In the pic below, the top two are 100% alpaca and the bottom one with elbow patches is 90% merino/10% cashmere. I think I'm keeping all three. ^_^ I think I mentioned this before, but I've changed sizes, so now my beloved All Saints skirts sit on my hips rather than higher on my waist as they did for the last couple of years, and this means I need longer sweaters, unless I want to do a lot of midriff-flashing at work whenever I raise my arms or reach for something across the desk. I was covered for regular cotton tops, but all my woollen winter sweaters were really too short. I've tried layering them, but that didn't really work (it worked fine for warmth, but not so well from the aesthetic point of view).

I'm still looking for warm boots, but other than that, I think I'm done for winter.

^ Do your older sweaters still work with pants? Maybe you can buy something with a higher waist that will work with them ...

I don't wear pants very often.. and the ones that I do have sit on the hips as well. But the loss is not so great anyway because it's only 2 sweaters and 1 cardigan that are now too short. The cardigan can still be layered, I just have to figure out a few combinations for it, and I'll probably use the sweaters for loungewear layering when it gets really cold. Those 3 were 75% of my winter sweaters for the past few years... the remaining 25% was demoted earlier because moths had nibbled on it.

My wardrobe was really somewhat in a disarray before this autumn, and I've spent so much time looking for things and analyzing and comparing and deciding in the past couple of months that I have shopping fatigue now. So now that I have some wearable warm sweaters, I think I can make do with what I have for winter. I'll look for a pair of warm boots still, but there's no hurry and I'll not have to go barefoot even if I don't find them.

I'm still looking for something in dark dark green. I remember Zara had a blazer of that colour, but I dont think they have it anymore.

My basic colours for my winterwardrobe will be: black, beige and burgundy. I love how these colours match. The dark green will be an extra colour.

I want this colour sweater/jacket. Does anyone know where to buy this?

i think you should try anthroplogie. :flower:

^^ Not exact colour matches, but some similar ones I have come across in my sweater searches:

Toast woollen cardigan (the cardi in your picture looks similar to some that Toast has this season, but not in that shade)

Wrap London merino/cashmere sweater (Wrap has several sweaters and cardis in similar shades actually)

I instantly checked out Wrap London after your post:lol: I really love the pink one. Such a gorgeous color.

I decided to wait untill the Sales to look for more sweaters. I am going to London in January and will probably find some then:)

Interesting idea about the skirt. I probably wouldn't move them, but remove them, if that is possible. I think belt loops just add unnecessary bulk anyway. I'll have another look at the skirt when I have the time. If I don't think I can fix it, I can return it untill January 7th:)

^ I have definitely removed belt loops before, should be possible ... however, depending on the fabric, you might or might not be able to see where they were. When I removed them before, it was invisible.

Finally received my new jacket today!! I like it ... I'm not fooled into thinking it's real fur, but it may be the best fake fur I've ever seen, and the color is flattering. The jacket is definitely warm ... I was getting too warm while trying it on in my living room. The lining rustles a little, but IMO it's just fine (there were several complaints about this in the reviews). Once when I had a new lining put in a skirt, I requested fabric that would make a little rustle ;) I also think I did the right thing sizing up ... the sleeves are a bit long (fine for warmth), but I needed it in the bust. I don't think I'd want to go smaller there. Overall, very happy, and can't beat the price! I consider it a bargain at full price.

Also my hand-knit ear warmer came today (ordered about 1.5 weeks after the coat & custom made for me last week!), but I have to go pick it up at the post office & sign for it.

PS Sure would be nice to be able to edit for longer like I can on other sites ... forgot to mention I got a nice compliment today. At lunch a coworker told me (English is not her first language) that all my things were 'very choosy' ... i.e., I think she meant carefully selected, curated, to my taste, that kind of thing. I thought that was very nice ;) Thought you other choosy people would like that

I really wanted a burgundy bag and now I found this one from zara. It's burgundy and darkgrey. So much easier to combine. I've made some selections with items of my winter wardrobe. What do you think?

Hi, is anyone here familiar with the pullover of Tommy Hilfiger/

debijenkorf.nl

I just want a simple sweater? But is the quality good/

^I think the logo disqualifies it from being a simple sweater, but that is just my opinion. I never cared much for logos...

J crew will have a sale soon, and they have a lot of pullovers in different fabrics and colors:flower: They also include taxes in the price, so you don't have to pay any duty fees when the item arrives:)

From what I can see, I like the bag:) You are looking for one smaller and another for work/school, am I correct? I would spend less on the one used for school. They get worn very fast...

Trenchcoat, I like the bag too, and I'd say it goes well with the items you've combined it with. Unfortunately, I have no experience with Hilfiger clothes.

eizhowa, the colours were what made me so attracted to those Wrap London sweaters! I need those muted, subdued sorts of colours near my face, bright-coloured tops can easily make me look like death warmed over. :ermm: Be warned though that their sizing runs somewhat large, in case anyone reading this is thinking of ordering. :flower:

ta-ta, glad to hear the jacket is a winner. :woot:

Yes, I have two bags in my wishlist. One big leather one and a small burgundy one. The bag is 50 euros and I love the colours.

I think the best idea is to invest in a smaller, more classic bag and spend less money on a school bag. Thats what I have done. I have a Balenicaga that is too small to carry school books and a large no-brand leather tote for school. When you carry around a bag full of books, it gets very damaged very quickly in my experience. I think your designer bag will last longer if you use it for days/occations when you don't need to bring books etc. Also, smaller bags tend to be more classic. How big is your Zara bag? Could it function as your school bag? I think it would look nice for everyday occations like school.

elle s'ennuie: In my recent experience, all knits are cut very big:rolleye: Size charts are no help anymore.

Ta-ta: I hope you get a camera for christmas:D I really want to see what the jacket looks like in real life (and that trench of yours;))
