The Acne Thread

My skin used to be in such horrible condition, but now it's flawless. I went on accutane and even though it made me sick, my skin now has zero spots. So if you are having trouble with your skin, stop wasting all your cash on over the counter products and see a derm. it's worth it.

my skin went from this

to Lily Cole-porcelein perfect skin

teh only regret i have is putting the derm-visit off for so long and suffering for nothing.

also cut out the fatty foods(chocolate, fried foods, anything dripping with oil/fat)

another thing I've noticed is that in many cases you tend to overtreat your skin and use too harsh products. Often women may be using a face scrub, face mask, a harsh astringent and treatment gel daily! Usually a gentle face wash and oil free moisturizer is enough, plus efoliating once or twice a week

^ how did it make you sick? Sounds a little worrying.

Its an incredibly strong drug. I was on Roaccutane. I'm not sure on the science of it all, but it permanently changes something in your body.

Its given people depression (to the point where a couple of people have succefully commited suicide), it can give diabetes, liver disease, high colesteral (sp, I know ) as well as the expected things, such as very dry skin and my lips bled.

When I was on it (a very high dose mind you) my hair started thinning out and I started seeing dots in my eyes (not unlike when you see things when you have a migraine).

You also have to have pregnancy tests taken every month as it can cause defects to an unborn child, and you need blood tests to keep check on your liver and lipids function.

You're also not allowed to give blood.

Again, I was on a very high dose so I'm not sure if it was this extreme for others, but yes, caution does need to be taken and you have to have a clear understanding of all the risks.

Apple cider vinegar?! Really?! How cool. I've got to try this. Not to sound dumb, but do you really just use the stuff from the grocery store?

yes that's what I use. Around 3 times a day after I wash my face I use it just like a astringent:wink:

i need this thread, my skins going a bit  at the moment so ill start now before it gets worse...:flower:

I can feel a pimple coming on, wham bam in the center of my forhead :o...help how do I make it go away ??

try dabbing some tea tree oil on the spot.. (you can even buy it at walmart by the pharmacy). I'm trying to think, hopefully somebody else will have some tips for you. Good luck:flower:

^ Thanks. I just used some of the Body Shop's tea tree oil masque thing...I have a presentation tomorrow, hopefully I won't have a big red dot on my face

I just saw my dermatologist today and he told me I didn't have to buy any special facial cleanser and to just use Dove Soap on my face:shock:
Do you know how many different products I have tried and he says to use SOAP???? I don't know if i can do it

^ I wouldn't recommend Dove if you've got dry/sensitive skin, apart from that it should be fine.
But I don't use cleanser either because it doesn't suit my skin.

question: is there anything I need to look for when I'm trying to find a dermatologist? like certifications, etc... I mean I know there is I just don't know what they are:P Hopefully I can go to one soon:woot:

ok, so, not only am i a bit of a product junky, but i also study the body and health out of my own personal interest, and i went on exchange somehwhere this summer where i stayed w/ a holistic dermatologist.. so i can assure you i know a good deal about skin/body:wink: i am 17, and i have glowing, healthy skin (which I get comments on quite frequently).. w/ the occasional break out (which are always the results of very OBVIOUS causes.. and i have never had more than 4 pimples at a time, in my life). Considering the fact that most of all my family has suffered from acne (my mother still has the occasional pimple, and she's in her 40s!!), I am 17 (and suffer from those dreadful hormones), and I do have eczema (a sign that my skin is very sensitive, as is my immune system)... I'd say I definately know quite a few tricks to fighting acne. Before I share some tips, I will also reiterate that I have very sensitive skin, AND I will add that I eat very healthy, and have cut out wheat, dairy and sugar.. for the most part. If you chow down on wheat and sugar daily.. perhaps you should lay off the products and realize that your problems may be simmering beneath the surface:wink:

alright, here is the first batch of my tips:

1) What you put inside your body definately effects what comes out of your body (i'm referring to skin here ). I eat very very healthy and have come to find that the healthier i get, the more glowing my skin becomes. cutting out certain destroyers like wheat, sugar and arguably dairy really help! foods which can make your skin *GLOW* are ones w/ high omega like fish (particularly salmon) and flax seed oil; foods w/ high vitamin C like orange fruits and vegetables; green leafy vegetables and as many veggies as possible; millet (a type of grain which is delicious and can be cooked just like rice); fruits and veggies w/ high antioxidant content;fiber definately helps, which can be found in gluten-free whole grains like brown rice, millet, teff, amaranth etc.; green tea; water; avacados (if you're tolerant of them.. my body doesn't like them); olives and olive oil; water... the list goes on

2) STAY AWAY FROM WEED haha ok i know this may seem humorous, but IM SERIOUS! smoking weed seriously distresses your body and weakens your immune system. smoking once in a while in the beginning may not produce any noticeable signs, depending on how tolerant your body is, but trust me, most all of the potheads i know either have acne, or break out everytime they smoke. Also, weed is coated w/ so many chemicals these days, you could literally be putting windex into your body- without even knowing it.

3) try to incorporate natural skin care products!
there's a saying that goes something like "never put anything on your skin that you wouldn't put in your body".. just think about it. i myself use neutrogena face wash, because i find that natural face washes aren't strong enough to compete w/ all the blush i put on i do use dr. hauschka face lotion and aubrey organics toner though! they really help to soothe all the distress of the damaging chemicals from my make up and face wash! just experiment w/ them.. after that initial breakout (if you get one), you'll most likely find that the natural skin care products will help to repair and soothe your skin, whether its nearly instantaneous or gradual. oh yes and.. if you dont wear tons of make up, like me, natural skin care products are SOOO much more effective and work in unison w/ one another when your whole regimen consists of natural skin care products..

4) exercise
for some reason (well actually, its quite scientifical but i cant get into that rightnow), exercise really helps the skin! sweating a bit does too.. SAUNAS are good

5) dont stress or obsess!!!!
never ever stress or obsess over your skin, even if you can't help it- JUST DONT! stress is a fairly silent killer- especially for your skin. This summer i got very bored and became a product junky in search of perfecting my skin. my obsession w/ my skin and overload of products led to distressed skin... causing me to obsess even more. finally, realizing that my stress was only aggravating the situation- i just gave it a rest and tried my best to forget about my skin, and went back to just a plain old wash twice a day, w/ a natural face lotion. my skin gradually became clear again, after i quit OBSESSING AND STRESSING!!!

6) (some) FOODS WHICH AGGRAVATE THE SKIN:
nuts (esp. almonds and peanuts), wheat and gluten, dairy (depends on your body type), sugar and other artificial sweeteners aside from natural ones like stevia, caffeine (mainly coffee), oils (olive oil and flax oils are harmless, unless you have eczema), and ofcourse... various food allergies.

7) vit supplements: certain vit. supplements such as green tea supps, alpha lipoic acid, vit c&E combo, multivitamins, milk thistle, zinc, multi enzymes and activated charcoal and all help you to achieve clear, glowing skin! make sure to look really good into what brand you're buying and what each supp does, before taking them!!!!!

8) apple cider vinegar- yeah it works relaly well for healing/ cleaing my skin! i saw someone post about it above... MAKE SUR EYOU DILUTE IT WITH WATER.. and use it as a toner. i'd say about 1.5/3 water 1.5/3 apple cider vinegar

hope some of this helps! i have LOADS of info on remedies, products .. the works on skin... private message me if you need any extensive advice.. id definately like to help:wink:

^Sorry, a stupid question, but should I stop eating also products made out of rye?

Has anyone tried Differin?

My doctor prescribed it for me and I couldn't commit to using it long term because it was making my skin worse (even though I guess it makes your skin worse before it gets better). I need some encouragement from someone who had good luck with it.

thank you for all your tips amorousluna!

do you have any tips to get rid of blackhead? :brows:

rye products have gluten.. most all bodies have difficulty processing rye. Nevertheless, rye is actually quite healthy, and i'm sure its fine.. BUT.. make sure the rye breads which you are eating dont contain other things... such as wheat and sugar:blush:

the best advice that i can give you is either microdermabrasion (there are home microdermabrasions such as epidermx, which most everyone has great results from, even though i didnt), or getting them extracted! certain toners help to alleviate them a bit... but yeah.. those are my best solutions. Also, a steam mask... perhaps the one by dr. hauschka... will help a bit! don't try those pore strips though... they just strip the protection from your skin... making it more vulnerable to bacteria, dirt and such  :flower:
