The Acne Thread

I visited one of Sydney's top skin care clinics to have my skin thoroughly assessed today...I thought I'd let you guys in on the experience and what the doctor's advised in regards to acne ;) The main problem I am having with my skin at the moment is red skin congestion/blocked pores and nasty whiteheads :( After a few skin scans they assessed the problem areas (which indicated where most oil was being produced) and suggested a few products that will really deeply cleanse my skin...Apparently the current skin care I'm using is only working at surface level, and not really working to control the oil from underneath the skin...

So they suggested a new skin care regime, using products from an Australian line called "aspect" to control oiliness and new pimples forming...Apparently these products are medically tested and do not contain harsh ingredients which can cause further irritation to the skin...They also suggested skin facials and blue light laser! But I'm not too sure about going that far...A facial perhaps ;)

And finally, they also suggested switching to mineral make-up (as a few others have suggested on this thread), since it doesn't clog pores and contains no harsh ingredients. They suggested I use mineral make-up from Jane Iredale's (http://www.janeiredale.com/) range...Good news is, I have been wearing it all day and my skin does not feel itchy or irritated (like usual)...It really is quite lovely :)

I'll definitely report back on how the products/facial have worked for my skin...Here's hoping its positive news!

thanks cuiviénen! that was very interesting! I don't even know if we have skin care clinics over here... but let us know how it goes for you ;)

thanks for filling us in!
Ive never heard of aspect. Though my parents are willing to buy me a one of those machines that supposely gets rid of pimples.
What kind of facial? Have you ever been to ella bache?

^ Yeah neither had I...But I've been using them and the itchiness/irritation on my skin has gone completely which is a good sign...Here is a little run-down on the products:

Aspect

And naturally Aspect is never tested on animals.

We look forward to sharing this remarkably different view of skincare with you through this extraordinary range

They suggested a 'jungle-brew' facial which intensely unblock's pores and regulates the balance of oily skin...They already gave me a serum which I am using twice a day, but it was suggested I undergo the facial soon since the facial will unclog pores right away, as opposed to just using small applications which will take over 2 months to work...But I'm kinda scared about the facial becuase she said it probably will break me out even more...
The blue-light laser therapy apparently kills the acne bacteria from underneath the skin and heals acne/acne scars after 6-8 sessions...

It all sounds ok, but it is very expensive...And I'm sure that you would have to return for more laser post-treatment...I'm thinking of just doing a light facial in conjunction with using the products...Oh and switching to mineral make-up ;)

And no I believe I haven't heard of ella bache. What is that?

Oh they're associated with David Jones right? Yeah I'm afriad of that occuring...I have very sensitive skin so its more than likely to happen, hence the reason I am hesitant :innocent: My skin is really hyper-sensitive at the moment, so a harsh treatment is definitely not a good idea...

I've tried lots of drugstore acne products and none of them helped. So I got tired of wasting money and finally went to a derm, who prescribed me benzoyl peroxide creams. All of those burned and dried up my skin (and I only put them on for 5 hours a day). So then she let me try Clindet pledges (clindamyacin), which worked really well for about a year. But a few months ago I guess my skin developed resistance and the pledges no longer worked.

So basically I got fed up in general of putting chemicals on my face and decided to go gentle and natural on my face. Since then my skincare regimen consists only of:

L'occitane Shea Butter and Cotton Cleansing Milk
Lush Celestial Moisturizer
St. Ives Apricot Scrub 2x or so a week.
Makeup remover when needed

My skin is clear save for spots left over from old acne and tiny pimples that I get once in a while. I'm not saying the "abolish all acne products" way is for everyone, but if you have sensitive/dry skin then perhaps all the chemicals are doing more harm than good. Hope this helps. :flower:

I have to agree. since I stopped using all of those chemical products my skin is a lot better. although it took a long time to recover from all those treatments and it's still not perfect. I get pimples quite often still, but it's way better than when I put all kinds of creams on it...

Stress and diet really affects the skin as well. When I get really stressed like during exams, I break out, but I'm not going back to acne products. Bacteria always ends up developing resistance, so most medications will stop working after a while. I am eating much more healthily now, cutting down on sugar. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with my skin clearing up though.

yeah when i'm stressed i eat alot of junk and i break out....

so i don't know if it's the food or the stress...

or both

I am on Dory X the pills I have one 100 MGs daily.. So far its ok. Im sure when I am on it 3 months straight it will work wonders for me

you can buy the nelson's acne gel at any Whole Foods store, or at most natural health food stores. It's also readily available online.

^^ I concur...I find that what works for my skin is to dab on a small amount of tea tree oil on the scar and then a little vitamin e cream (at night)...However, it does take a little time...Scars are less visable within a month using this combonation! I have very fair, overly sensitive skin as well ;) For red spots, lemon juice is a working like a dream! It dries/clears up the area overnight! I'd like to thank those who had suggested it :flower:
