The Blonde Hair Thread

thank you Ida & teenagexvanity :D
i think with hair in general you just gotta go for it! people always try to pick one color that is the best for me and there is no consensus. to be quite honest i go with whatever i feel like doing at the time...im just the kind of girl who likes to experiment. im young now, depending on what job i have when im older i may not be able to do these colors without getting judged in the wrong way. ive been lucky to not have any dirty looks as of yet. and i know how people are, they may seem not to care but they snicker behind your back but i dont let that kind of stuff stop me. this current color took me nine months but i just rocked whatever i had in the meantime(as long as its not orange/brassy/fried looking of course!)

its definitely not a color for the faint of heart lol its the kind of color that makes me want to style my more! its cool because it can go so many ways depending on how i want to style like punky-extreme, gossip girl trendy, or soft and dreamy etc

thank you GasolineRainbow!
i promised myself that if my hair ever starts to feel un-sexy thats my cue to stop coloring for sure then i'll be like *au revoir* my blonde beauties!

i'll still have my love for blonde hair(i like other colors too) but i'll just admire from the sidelines ;)

^Yes, that's actually what happened to me. I had this creamy, light color that I loved, but after a while it felt like straw. Kind of unfair, because my hair is supposedly light enough to go that blonde without too much damage. I do wonder if hair texture has anything to do with it; mine is medium wavy, and yours seems thicker and straighter, so maybe it can handle more wear and tear?

hmm that maybe it. but i think there are so many factors. the more i do to the my hair colorwise, the more 'guidelines' i have for myself but i dont find them restricting. then again i was never the kind of girl who feels the need to style my hair everyday lol my idea of styling is tossing my hair around *tada* ~just let the wind style it~

GR, did you straighten or blow dry regularly?

i do think my current salon has way way way better products not only styling but like the bleaches/dyes than my former salon. its like they get you light enough fast enough but not in an overly harsh way. they are a higher end salon so they are always trying newer stuff as 'technology' gets better. my hair doesnt feel bad despite the bleach, manageable when wet(when she combs it) and still okay when they finally get it dry. they do use more products than i do on a normal basis but i dont have a hard time at home. it depends on how my hair is feeling that day, i use products accordingly. sometimes none is necessary so i'll do that too. shoot! i make my own rules! i do keep in mind what the bottles say or what is recommended but really you just gotta know your(<-im generalizing) own hair. product abuse and build up will do your hair no good.

my hair still feels slick in the shower. i do stick to my tried and true moisturizing JF Sheer Blonde Lustrous Touch stuff. to me shampoo is almost a bigger deal than that conditioner although im not trying to downplay how amazing i think the conditioner is. i dont go for normal/color hair shampoos because they get it squeaky clean to the point i feel like i have no more natural oils in my hair and i hate that feeling in the shower. so super gentle or moisturizing shampoos are best for me. 1) you should never try to dry out your hair in the first place with harsh shampoo 2) then you wont need a hair mask on the daily or even weekly...although obviously i pay a lot of attention to my hair so i know if its in need of some masque love. i 'play it by ear'

despite my color changes i pretty much live like a hippie lol i avoid all kinds heat like blow drying unless i have to look perfect(not that it looks bad damp/near dry but 'time & place' of course sometimes i have to look extra polished). my hair usually looks dry when i get to school or wherever but if you feel it its still cool to the touch because im still airdrying. i dont brush/comb it very often either...i do my once over to let it dry then its mostly finger combing throughout the day. since its very straight i dont buy into straightening iron hype. curling i would say i do like once every few weeks when i want to look cute ;) but i do plan for it. ill wash hair the night before and air dry then wake up and curl. so that way i can skip the blowdrying and not have to do so much heat stuff all in one day.

my hair is really really straight so i have a natural distaste for straightening irons especially on the ends...i dont like what they call 'dagger' hair where the ends are super pointy. so i use a big curler on low heat to coax my ends in, not a full curl at all just softens it. i split my hair to four big sections and just lightly touch the ends with the curler.

my natural color is dark brown and i think medium thickness? so its not too stubborn against bleach/dye but strong enough to handle the bleach. my sisters have fine hair so they havent had very good experiences with bleach. its coo because they generally like darker hair. this last time i was in the salon they used 40 vol bleach on my roots and 20 vol over the 'lines'. the hairdressers checked on me of course. the blonde lady next to me was asking does it hurt? cuz she said she hates doing it. im like not really...is it supposed to?! i feel like root lifter/box color dyes(from back in the day) tingled more than the bleach...

damn this post is getting really long @_@

But informative;) I've picked up great tips from you. I do blow dry in cold weather, but I let it air-dry otherwise. And I never use straightening irons. The salon I went to had a good reputation, and I used gentle products. I could get my hair to look good, but I didn't like how it felt. My hair was naturally soft, so I guess I missed that. I'm almost rid of the damaged ends, and I can feel the difference in texture. I would like to go back to a lighter blonde someday, but I will try to achieve it with highlights, not a base color. Like I said, my hair color is light enough so that it will be believable. Still damaging, but less than a full dye job.

I really want to go blonde again... But I also hate having roots and I don't want to damage my hair now that I finally got a hair cut . If I go blonde, I'd use blonde spray and do it gradually myself. I have found the perfect toner that is very close to my real hair colour (kinda dark reddish blonde) so that I can go back.
But I really don't know. I don't want to ruin my "virgin hair", but at the same time I think it's boring and I miss being blonde. Especially after seeing kissablekae being pale and blonde and looking gorgeous!

Exactly my problem. Kissablekae, you're a bad influence!

Haha, I am the worst with roots. I never get them done as soon as I should, and usually go for about a month with really visible roots. But I think my natural hair color and my style kind of help me pull it off without looking too bad.

Right now I'm experimenting with John Freida's "Go Blonder" Shampoo, with their toning conditioner. I'm pretty happy with the results, and the toner seems to really keep me from getting brassy. I'm definitely going to keep using it (probably once a week, or even less) and see what happens long term.

right now i am just COVETING scarlett johanssons hair in "the island"

I think I have similar colouring to her (same pale, fair skin, same coloured eyebrows, and both light eyes) so I think i'm going to do my best to keep my hair in good shape and then make a trip to the salon with those two photos in hand!

Has anyone here used protein treatments on their hair? I've used the aphogee two step once, and i've heard so many raves about it that i think im actually going to buy the bottles rather than the sample packages and go to my hair! and then hopefully by mid june-july i can achieve the colour i'm dreaming of :)

no prob ^_^

i know lol i have like women in their 30's and 40's telling me they want to go back to blonde again after seeing my hair! i would never in a million years been able to tell that they even had blonde before. what can i say? lots of women crave change from time to time. it truly is fun for me and an overall mood booster! i stopped coloring my hair for ten months and whenever i got a compliment on it i said "thank you" but in my head i was thinking why? its so meh! i was felt like i was stuck in a rut. i had a bad summer so in August before Fall semester started i NEEDED a change so i thought why not cross Blonde off my to-do list? who knew it would take so long but im glad i hung in there. there are some people who were against it, a few family members...

speaking of which, one of my sisters totally doesnt get it. earlier at din din she asked me how much it cost and i was like why you wanna know  coming from her i cant imagine it to be a harmless question. whatevs im grown so i do what i want.

i feel that hair is like skin, it can change somewhat as you age. my younger sister had tons of hair as a kid but now not so much. now i somehow have the most hair out of my sisters. when i was younger teen my hair didnt behave like it was super flat, crazy baby hairs, and it would curl in on one side and curl out the opposite side like *hayyyyy* actually my solution for the baby hairs was to air dry! i get less split ends this way too so i stuck with that. volume i think its because i dont part it before air drying, i just comb it all back and itll fall/part on its own once its dry.

^_^ thanks dearie! temporary blonde hairspray is quite fun for special occasions because ppl are like whoa how did you do that?! and you go back to normal after one washing. back then it was my blonde fix! the only thing is its very shimmery and it gets on collars/necks of shirts depending on your hair length. i left my hair straight because when you spray it you have to comb it through or else it doesnt look smooth & evenly colored/coated.

i know what you mean about virgin hair! i didnt color my hair till i was seventeen but a lot of people thought i needed lighter hair, they told me after i colored it hahaha so i had light brown hair for all of senior year and then some...it helped a ton because im NW15 right now with what i call a 'tan' but May '08 and before that i wasnt even beige toned more like paper white  and i didnt wear makeup till College so yeahhh

oo lawd i dont even wanna think about how vicious my roots will be :innocent: im considering a darker root next time. no highlights please cuz i hate the lines. i dunno i gotta talk to my HD about it. im sure we will figure something out.

the only protein treatment ive tried so far is Bumble and Bumble Deeep. my HD made a 'special concoction' for me last time with all Bumble masques : Deeep, Damage Therapy, and Creme de Coco(<-this one i have and like) and it worked out nicely. ive heard that you have to be careful with protein treatments like to not use too often and if it does build up then gotta back off for a bit/use clarifying shampoo. definitely not something you want to get accustomed to because then the hair will always need it. (this is stuff ive heard but havent experienced)

aparently dumb blonde by TIGI is really good
also has anyone tried the manic panic toner called "virgin snow" that supposedly gets your hair white?
someparts of my hair are already white but under my fringe my roots are ginge due to diy bleaching, what colour dyou think it would turn if i used this stuff?
i was thinking of also trying a wash in wash out colour in cool blonde which is blue as maybe itd counteract the orangeyness, its dead cheap though so im guessing it may not work. has any one else tried this?
xx

Oh, but it's not temporary. It's permanent. It's a very mild bleach that you spray on, then you blow dry your hair, et voila, you're about 1-2 shades blonder :magic: You can do your roots and your own highlights, and you can control how blonde you go. But of course, it's just as damaging as anything else, and I just got all my worn-out hair cut off :(

Some people get their roots highlighted so that the growing-out stage isn't too akward...and you can go longer between appointments  I actually kinda like roots, but only just showing. Max. 2 cm, I think. It's actually weird not having them.:lol:

I could, of course, just sit back and let the sun do the bleaching. Which is as damaging as doing it yourself, but it's cheaper.

Ida, i agree. its weird when people dont leave any roots or any subtle highlights for dimension. my HD calls it the 'stripper touch up' where they just dump bleach on their heads. i think next time i'll ask her to do a darker root by either less time with 40 vol or lower vol. whatever works. im gonna bring in pictures fa sho and see what her suggestions are.

the blonde spray reminds me of what my friend used called Sun-In because its like a DIY gradual hair lightening/bleaching thing. she blow dryed too and stayed out in the sun for it to work and it made a mess of her hair. very damaged and brassy...its been a while so she has trimmed most of it away but she says the bottom part of her hair with the Sun-in didnt pick up highlights well and wasnt as 'white blonde' like creamy anymore. she is a natural light ash blonde : her brows are super light/has a translucent quality against her skin but the hair on her head has darkened slightly as she has aged and her roots are more ash/greyer so she tried that stuff...now she just gets highlights i think about every four months.

Olivia Palermo
i see her as a perfectionist when it comes to her looks but somehow i dont mind the roots on her because she is always so groomed : hair, makeup, and clothes. its one thing to have roots on dirty greaseball hair and another to have roots on clean shiny hair.

Of course it depends on your hair, but I have never experienced any brassy tones when using it. I do it very very gradually, though, and I never go out in the sun with it. It takes me over a week to lighten my roots because I apply so little after every shampoo, and I make sure to deep condition every time I shampoo.

Olivia has PERFECT roots, but I actually hate her curls. They are too "done". Her face can take hair that doesn't sit perfectly on her haid. Sometimes I think her hair looks so unnatural that it looks like a wig :ninja:

^ i think what your using is different from my friend's. the product your describing sounds a lot safer and since you still like it from using it before it must be good.

i like her curls at that event because its more fallen out than usual for her but i do agree that sometimes its way too perfect looking = wiggy effect. i dont like it when she does the 'dagger' ends with the straightening iron *eep* i prefer a softer straight hair look on her. its funny how so many people are totally into the messy bedhead hair but she chooses to always look super polished. ~she is a robot, do what she says~

my friends used to make fun of my middle part because it would always fall perfectly no matter what, even if i slept in it or washed it. but if i wanted it jagged then i had to purposely mess it up myself.

the roots are nice because its not like straight blocks of color. i noticed some people's hair grows out more zigzag so it looks highlighty which is nice. im not sure about myself because i never let it grow out that much :ninja:
