The Business of Magazines

For my magazine, our photographers have done photoshoots in advance so we're good to go for the next two issues but after that I haven't talked to my international teams on how we are going to deal with that. We'll probably wait til things cool down (no pun intended) before making or planning new photoshoots.

Our writers can work from home and interview people online and get their answers with lots of time so it works out well too.

As for model castings and layouts editions on the pages, it's all online via Skype or Google Hangouts.

As for the remaining 12 other editions of ``Cool´´ I know my team mates in other countries have decided to either stop publishing til things get better or they will produce shoots in zones where it's not quarantine just yet but yeah it's crazy to me.
I can imagine it’s crazy! Thanks for sharing this info. Very insightful.

This whole situation is f*cked up and weird. I’m glad TFS provides some distraction of it all. Hope everyone can stay safe, sane and healthy

There's also the small matter of advertisers, not sure how much you rely on them. They're either flatly not buying space, holding on, or decreasing their spend for now. It's like June has come early. The UK market is different in that ad spend picks up steam from March right through to autumn not only to target locals, but also incoming tourists. With no tourists in sight, they simply don't see the need to go big. In fact, I predict the June/July issues will definitely feel the pinch or come extra slim this year. Unless things revert to normal next month.

Personally for distraction, as I also work as a University teacher on top of fashion, when I am not giving online classes to my students I watch a hell of a lot of TV series on Netflix every single day aahahha.

Does the VI archive work for everyone? It is still locked for me, doesn't let me go inside the issues!

Odd! Just signed up and it works perfectly fine for me.

First issue I headed to was January 1999 and I'm amazed how all the ad campaigns are nearly identical. As though they were shot by the same photographer. But stunning nevertheless.
This archive will keep me occupied for days, lol.

I'm a dumba$$, didn't enter the code haha. Oh me too!! Obsessed with the archive!!

VP also giving access to March issue for free now, nice. US Vogue needs to step up!!!

^Yup, I don't see many survivng this. And it will probably push titles like US Vogue to combine months , i see them doing June/July this year, which i totally loathe!!

The Vogue Italia archive is great. I went straight to the few issues from 1991 that I didn't get at the time, and it felt like unfinished business finally getting sorted out almost thirty years later.
I been so over TFS andf it's constant negativity, but it's members like you, and posts like this that keep me coming back. Where else could i laugh AND nod at the same time over a comment?!!

But I want FULL ACCESS from US Vogue!!!! Imagine.
it's not even about the edits or HQ images for me, it's the ads, the snippets, the written content and so forth. The magazine as a whole.

Benn you do know Santa isn't real, don't you? :innocent::rofl::P if only... ahaha I would love to have this US archive too.

Oh god, the american ads... a dream come true! I really wish they'd open it. Even a month would be enough!

I want it so bad, at one point i almost paid the asking price to get it, i was sick at home.

Same here! Considered buying it so many times but since the re-design I don't even understand how. I remember that there was a comparison between offers and a form to fill out before, but now they keep re-directing me to subscribe to the damn magazine! Tried sending an email but got no response... the fact that it's so far out of my reach only makes me want it more lol

This is interesting
Playboy Is Shutting Down the Print Magazine
Jordan Crucchiola

Just as many other businesses are having to rapidly reevaluate structures and revenue streams in light of coronavirus-related isolation measures being put in place, so too is Playboy. The publication announced today that it will no longer be putting out its quarterly print magazine and going fully digital for the remainder of the year before recommencing more limited print runs in 2021. Here’s an excerpt from the long open letter by Playboy’s CEO:

“We have decided that our Spring 2020 Issue, which arrives on U.S. newsstands and as a digital download this week, will be our final printed publication for the year in the U.S. We will move to a digital-first publishing schedule for all of our content including the Playboy Interview, 20Q, the Playboy Advisor and of course our Playmate pictorials. In 2021, alongside our digital content offerings and new consumer product launches, we will bring back fresh and innovative printed offerings in a variety of new forms–through special editions, partnerships with the most provocative creators, timely collections and much more. Print is how we began and print will always be a part of who we are.”

So, it’s more of a pause in print than an outright stoppage. The “Rabbit Head,” as this letter bafflingly describes the Playboy Bunny logo, will return to the page, but another possible economic collapse sending 2008-PTSD waves through the publishing industry is certainly not what magazines needed right now.

I wonder how many others will follow Playboy's strategy!

Given the on-going Coronavirus situation, both Laura Brown of InStyle and Masha Fedorova of Vogue Russia have confirmed via Instagram that there will still be print editions of their magazines in the coming months.
