The Business of Magazines

Interesting thread!
I don't think this is a good choice. I would rather go for Fabien Baron and Karl Templer. After leaving Interview, I think they have some time left.

Cosmopolitan UK publisher to cut 100 jobs

Oliver Luft
Thursday 26 February 2009

National Magazine Company is to make nearly 100 staff redundant – almost 15% of its workforce – as it bids to cut costs after its chief executive claimed it was facing the worst business conditions during his 20 years with the firm.

The publisher, which produces 17 consumer titles including Cosmopolitan, Esquire, Good Housekeeping, and Harper's Bazaar, said the move was one in a series of measures designed to reduce its costs "in the face of unprecedented economic challenges to the business". NatMag is the principal business in the UK of American media giant Hearst Corporation.

"These are the worst conditions that we have faced in my 20 years at NatMag and the impact to the revenue side of our business is largely outside of our control," said Duncan Edwards, chief executive of Natmags.

"We are therefore acting now to reduce the cost base of the business to enable us to get through this period in the best shape we can. It is a matter of enormous regret that we will be parting company with so many colleagues and we will do everything we can to minimise the redundancies and to ensure that those that do go are treated well," Edwards added.

The latest round of job cuts follow quickly after the disclosure, earlier this month, that a number of NatMag's women's titles had suffered big drops in their circulation in the latest ABC figures for the second half of 2008.

very true, they are both phenomenal!

but Fabien wants to apparently concentrate on his company, Baron & Baron...
In the thread for 'Interview Magazine March 2009 Mary-Kate Olsen by Craig McDean', someone said that both might be planning for a new magazine of their own...
Only time will tell!

PARTING WAYS: The decks have yet again shuffled at Interview. First, the magazine appointed a new managing editor, Alexandra Mack, who was formerly assistant managing editor at Domino. Also, Russell Labosky was named art director to succeed Aurélie Pellissier, who left Interview earlier this month. Labosky was a former art director of Vogue and creative director of Men’s Vogue. Meanwhile, director of marketing Susan Cappa has also departed after only seven months. Her replacement has not yet been named. The departures follow the ouster of co-editorial director Fabien Baron and creative director Karl Templer in January.

TIME OUT The New York Times T Style Magazine: The recession eating into ad pages has forced the title to shave two issues off of its publishing schedule, for a total of 13 issues in 2009. The Women’s Summer Fashion and Design & Living editions will become sections in The New York Times Sunday Magazine in its May 3 and May 31 editions, respectively. The Times usually publishes four women’s fashion issues, one for each season. T is the latest New York Times glossy publication to succumb to recessionary pressures: the March 15 issue of biannual real estate magazine Key will also fold into the Sunday Magazine.

more on t from wwd...

Real Simple has hired Janet Froelich as creative director, responsible for the look of the magazine, Web site, products and other brand platforms. Froelich joins Time Inc. after 22 years at The New York Times, where most recently she served as creative director of The New York Times Magazine and of T: The New York Times Style Magazine. Froelich also helped launch the now defunct sports quarterly Play and the real estate title Key. She succeeds Vanessa Holden, who left Real Simple in December 2006; in October, Holden became the editor in chief of Martha Stewart Weddings.

^Thanks kimair... I skipped over that one on purpose since it was about her moving to Real Simple

Dasha Zhukova named editor-in-chief of Pop magazine

dashazhukova460.jpg

Dasha Zhukova, the co-founder of fashion label Kova & T and Roman Abramovich's girlfriend, is to be the new editor-in-chief of trend-setting style magazine Pop.

The magazine's owner, Bauer Media, has appointed Zhukova to head up a revamp of the influential fashion and art title in partnership with editorial director Ashley Heath, who is rejoining the magazine he helped found a decade ago.

Zhukova replaces Katie Grand, the founding editor of Pop, who jumped ship to Condé Nast last year to launch rival style title Love, the first issue of which hit newsstands last week.

Russian-born Zhukova has no previous magazine editing experience but she is well known in the fashion and art world. She recently founded the Garage Centre for Contemporary Culture, Moscow's largest exhibition venue, which opened in September.

Zhukova and Heath are recruiting a new freelance team, after Grand took most of her creative team with her when she moved to found Love at Condé Nast in September last year. Former Wallpaper executive Tom Bailey is also joining as associate publisher of Pop.

The first issue of the new Pop will be published on 1 September with a cover price of £5 and a large print format of 230mm by 300mm.

Pop's new editor-in-chief said she was excited to take on the challenge and would find extending the magazine's remit "stimulating".
"We are working hard on a complete revamp of the magazine in order to provide a broader point of view focusing also on art, contemporary culture and the globalisation of all things pop-related," Zhukova added.

Heath conceived and co-launched Pop in 1999-2000 with Grand and previously held the editorial director role at the title. He is also a former fashion director of The Face and editor-in-chief of Arena Homme Plus.
Pop was "one of a handful of truly iconic brands", said Heath. "I'm delighted to return to the magazine in partnership with Dasha Zhukova to revamp Pop. Together we have ambitious plans.
"These are challenging times and yet they are also extremely exciting. Dasha represents a fantastic combination of style, intelligence, youth and cultural clout. Her international perspective is key," Heath added.
Pop has established an editorial board to provide guidance and inspiration, to include design critic Alice Rawsthorn; artist and film director Sam Taylor-Wood; artist and art director Peter Saville; fashion icon Daphne Guinness; art director Julia Restoin Roitfield; Rebecca Wilson, head of development at the Saatchi Gallery; and David Davies, managing director of Pop, among others.

this is such, to say the least, an unexpected choice. what i do wonder is whether Dasha has the right level of credibility in fashion community to actually settle in to such position. apart from being a contemporary art-related person and an ultimate It-girl i've never really though of her as anything close to fashion publishing.
i wouldn't be surprised with such an appointment taking place in Russia, but really... it's London, it's international fashion scene... how come? at least there has to be SOME sense for this to happen. looking forward to news.

^ I am not sure in her abilities either, but I heard that she kinda help Shachri with russian Bazaar. Will not surprised if Amirchanova take her place in the Pop since she is a close friend to Dasha also.

i though of Shachri too... but i really doubt of both, because, let's be honest. it's totally other scale and another responsibility. i'm really intrigued with all this happening (yet a bit skeptical).

Dasha is the editor of Pop. Dasha who has no fashion experience outside of being incredibly pretty and wearing frocks.

oic.

So the girlfriend of incredibly wealthy man snags cushy fashion position.

Wonders never cease...

That's awhole lot of hot air.

I don't understand the logic of making Dasha the editor-in-chief on POP. I mean this is not some fun new magazine, this is POP, a magazine that has built up a reputation. I was wondering if they're trying to make it a success based on the back of her 'fame' but she's really not famous enough to sell solely because of her name. Has Dasha ever done anything remotely similar to this position? The only thing I can remember her doing is her pretty basic clothing range Kova & T.

Katie Grand is some very big shoes to fill, and appointing Dasha means they're not even attempting to fill those shoes. Could they really have not got anyone better?

So Ashley Heath is essentially the editor of POP with a freelance team making it happen, with Dasha as the 'name' to add some international glamour and contacts to the publication. In that capacity, she could work well, but I think everyone has their doubts that she'll be the one in the office working all hours ahead of deadline to make it happen. She'll be 'hard at work' at social events - is POP to be an 'alternative Tatler' now?

If anything, the news makes me curious as to the new direction of POP.
