The Business of Magazines

^ Thanks so much for posting. Shocked at the MC numbers, like huh? But then i don't get UK Harpers appeal either, its always the same, dated, drab content! Not that they have impressive numbers!

UK Vogue seems to be doing well, but i feel like Edward could take it over 200K per issue, if he brings his A game, and doesn't repeat the Feb reprint fiasco!

Jillian Davison (Fashion Director) and Sasha Iglehart (Deputy Fashion Director) were both fired from Glamour US today. Deborah Needleman named Editor at Large of Harper’s Bazaar US.

OMG, Davison was one of Anna’s favorite. She’s so good. Why???

The other one, Idk. What does a deputy fashion director?

Can someone explain to me how on earth Marie Claire can average 157K per issue with messy art direction, reprints, and ??? Ok, so sometimes I find myself reading the content on a lazy Sunday afternoon, but it's hardly worth investing month after month! What does that say about our women?

I mentioned in another thread that Harper's got way more ad pages than Vogue for March. And not from fur traders, from actual bluechip brands. I can see why! The direction is concise and direct, issue after issue, the audience have cash to burn. I mean, they are showing a growth of 4%. A growth, any growth, is remarkable. The March issue also marked the inclusion of a more 'saucier' for choice of better words, editorial and I think at some stage their aesthetic won't be so 'conservative' anymore. I know it's not for you,, but I can see why other, older woman latch onto it.

As for Vogue, the true test of Edward's newsstand success can only be measured in August this year. This figure of 190K is not on him. Vogue fell to 190K for the previous half, so somehow Alexandra and the interim editor kept that figure steady. I'd like to know how February fared.

Meanwile, Vogue Paris for 2017:

Feb - Anna Ewers - 115,619.
Mar - Valentina Sampaio - 99,611.
Apr - Christy - 100,285.
May - Vittoria - 101,064.
June/July - Gisele - 145,978.
August - Gisele - 142,069.
September - Edie - 110,196.
October - Cara - 119,083.
November - Rianne van Rompaey - 93,914.
December/January - Rihanna - 138,352.

I'm not surprised that Rianne van Rompaey sold so poorly, that cover was terrible. Also not surprised that Rihanna turned a measly 138K for a dual month. But Gisele's fur cover turned 142K????? Crikey!

Wow... Back to back months and Gisele still had the top two sellers. I’m impressed tho I hate to admit it.

Yeah, omg!! In total shock at the MC numbers, i mean could that be a mistake? It has to be!!!:o:blink:

I can see the point you are making about Harper's attracting a certain reader, especially age group. I suppose those reader are not into more edgier stuff, so not sure if it would work for them? And i defo agree that being up 4% in this climate, is something!

Not surprised by Gisele numbers, she always sells for Vogue's, always a sure thing to have her on the cover. In fact I heard that, last year, Alt offered her a THIRD cover, but Gisele turned it down due to scheduling problems. I mean how insane is that? When i heard that, it was hard to believe, but seeing these numbers it makes sense. Kinda sad Valentina's issue didn't do better, but at least Rianne's awful cover did even worse.

And Rihanna actually did pretty well, what do you mean? Their holiday issues sell always around this much, unless previous issues sold much better, can't remember. Thanks a million for posting the VP numbers. :flower:

Thx or posting VP number, Benn

Is the september issue of VP always that bad in sales?

My least favourite Vogue Paris cover of 2017 was Rianne van Rompaey's and I'm not surprised it sold so poorly. It was bold and unconventional for the magazine but so was Gisele's for June/July... but obviously Gisele is Gisele and Rianne is Rianne. I hope Alt learns from those figures and NEVER does anything like that November cover again.

Come to think of it... no wonder the February and March covers of Vogue Paris have been so safe in 2018!

Many thanks Benn98 for fetching those figures over for us! :flower:

The Rianne cover was eye-catching, but not appealing. It looked like a bad dream.

I find it hard to believe that UK MC sells so well. What black magic are they working with those figures? They don't seem to come in multi-packs, they don't offer a free gift with every issue, they don't have a rock-bottom subscription rate... so where are the numbers coming from?

Agree, those December numbers are not determinative. They're a mix of (A) Alex's efforts, and (B) the Hype of #NewVogue

Let's see when the 2018 numbers come in.

Is Interview fold out? We are almost in the march and the Feb issue is not out yet

Interview is not dead, just saw the new cover at the shop. Completely re designed, smaller and new logo from the original Interview in he 80s. Better paper than before. Cover by David sims. Contributors include Demarchelier, Lindbergh, Baron, McDean, Sims, Slimane,, etc. Lots of Karl Templer

Omg. This is so good!
Davis sims and Karl Templer ❤️❤️❤️

Thanks for letting us know WeberFanatic. That's a relief, especially at a time where every other magazine seems to verge on self-implosion. I figured Fabien would have pulled one of these moves and just shelved a Feb issue (which is a little bit dodge).

Although the recent controversies around some of the people above...hopefully won't leave too much of a bad impression for the mag's image.
