The Curvy Thread

I completely disagree that clothes only look good on people who are thin. People who are unnaturally thin really do not look their best in clothes in my opinion. I am around someone constantly who has an eating disorder and she really doesn't look that great in clothes. I think being at your personal best is when you feel most comfortable and look the best.

I also want to remind everyone that this is not a thread about weight, and I'm not saying anyone has crossed any boundaries yet but if you have concerns regarding weight and want to discuss being curvy versus being thin, please discuss it in The Weight Thread in Body and Soul.

I think this is a really good thread.
I have to get comfortable with my curves 'cause at the moment Im really not. Im very curvy, I have like marilyn monroe curves, wich can be pretty ennoying concidering Im only 15 and an indie kid. and all other indie kids are super skinny.
so it's nice with a thread for curvy people, it makes me feel less alone ... :b

Awww, welcome thovety! I totally understand you, I used to be a Monroesque 15-year old and felt self-conscious :ninja:. It's hard wearing a voluptuous body when you don't want to feel "sexy" :(. But with time I'm sure you'll learn to love your curves (I'm sure the boys do already!), and you won't have it any other way! :flower: With hints in this thread I think you'll be able to think up cool styles that only YOU can pull off, and others will be envying you.

Hello everyone!

I am looking for skirt style for someone who is hour glassed shaped (me!). I have plenty of A-like skirts and I am sick of it. I'm looking for something a bit sexy for NYE. I have the fabric so I'm going to make it myself but I need some ideas that will good on me.

baRose, just off the top of my head...if you want sexy...maybe a below-the knee pencil skirt w/slit? A tulip-shaped or irregular hemmed below-the-knee skirt...?

Nice to see you, baRose. What about a long narrow godet? Or pencil that hits your knee in the right place?

PS I have been out of pocket due to my hard drive crashing while I'm on Christmas vacation :(

Try a pencil skirt with a slit or a bit of flounce-- always fun.

Note: the worst place for a skirt to hit is midcalf. Try either floor-length or to the bottom of the knee (or narrow mini, which can be shockingly flattering)

See for me it's really bad because I cannot get cute jeans that fit right because I'm not only curvy, but have a 24" inseam (I'm 5'6") and a lot of jeans sized for juniors start at 27 or 28.

Turtlenecks are a no-no for me as well as anything high-necked because it drags me down.

You can always get jeans hemmed

How to dress if you full-figured?

OK, I been debating for long time before posting, but I really need help...
Getting older (mid 30s) and gaining some weight in certain areas (hips and bust) making me change my style - nothing fits/flatters as it did before... :(
Any advice on what to wear for full figure? (DD, equal hips, smaller waist; petite?)
I am stuck with shirts/jeans or pants/jacket - how about dresses? I love wearing dresses, but... Deep "v"s, halter, wrap - nothing fits well.... :( Any advice on style for dresses and tops?

I am sure I am not the only one struggling - help!

I'm not a heavy girl but I have some big hips and some definite junk in my trunk....makes it hard to find clothes that fit!

Even when I was a size 2 I was pear-shaped and long-waisted, plus I have always thought separates made for a more versatile and longer-lasting wardrobe, so I just don't do dresses as a rule.

When you get to the D-DD range, knits become a staple. I layer knits all the time (including the occasional knit dress).

I also wear skirts most of the time. A-line, godet, flare, tapered, straight ...

Am I helping at all here? :flower:

I have a curvy shape, but I'm petite. My problem is finding shirts to compliment my large bust without looking pregnant. I have a small waist, so I get fitted (not tight ) tops to kind of find a happy medium. I don't wear high necklines because it makes my bust look larger, so a lower neckline is best. I have read that a V neckline is flattering on all bodies.
It's very frustrating, I end up buying larger tops and tailoring down, or make something of my own. It's a shame because all the hot fashion is not really geared to curvy women, thin or not. I'm a size 4!

Tailoring may cost more extra money on your part, but it's not as much as the cost of the garment hanging in the closet not being worn.

Birdlady, Educo, I totally understand...I recently made the very happy discovery that drapier, perhaps even asymmetrical, tops (with simple, slightly lower necklines) are very flattering to hourglass types. Batwing sleeves, kimono sleeves, maybe off-shoulder, and soft, loose but clingy knits in general are fabulous. I love them, alone or layered.

I have an extremely hourglass shape. I mean my hips are 13" bigger than my waist. (I'm not giving the top, but I'm not pear shaped.) Anyway, I find that sometimes it really is easiest to bite the bullet and buy something a little bit more expensive than you wanted, and then pay more to have it tailored. If you have trouble justifying it, think about how long and often you can wear a pair of perfect pants vs pants that you settled for. I also need pants that have a straighter line from my hip. Because my body is so curvy, I've found that nothing soft and draping is as flattering as a hard line here and there. If I add angular lines through my wardrobe, it enhances the lines of my body and firms them up.

Oh, and with the boots, I just go to a shoemaker and have them stretch the leather in the calves.

fashionista-ta and Melisande, thank you for help!
I went out shopping today, got some separates, and jackets and skits are fitting well - even managed to get good pair of pants that do not need tailoring! Happy! To my surprize, a-line skirt looked awesome on me, I am so used to pensil skirts all the time
I am still bummed about dresses, but i will keep trying them on - lol...

How do you get jeans tailored so the waist is taken in? Is it easy/difficult to do right? Does it entail extra seams in the waistband?

I'm getting tired of my jeans falling down...

TIA
