The Curvy Thread

a uk 12 is more like a us4 probably. american sizes run very big. that is why so many are size 0 and double 0. they claim the difference between here and the uk is only 4, but that is a lie.i am a eu 34/36 but i am also as us0 in almost every store

I've always been an hourglass, and recently I'm also plus, so dressing to flatter my shape is one of my main concerns. The fit of things is very important: anything baggy and shapeless looks sloppy, and exactly what I don't want. The only thing worse is women in clothes that are too small. Think about what a difference it would make if Mariah Carey wore clothes that were the right size!

Recently I discovered how flattering wrap dresses are, even as a plus. I only have one but plan to add more to my wardrobe as I find them. I also prefer straight-legged (instead of flared, bootcut, or heaven forbid, tapered) pants and jeans and tops that are open at the neck. High neck, turtleneck, can't stand them on me.

And just as an aside to a previous comment, celebs like Halle Berry and Hilary Swank who are curvy have said in interviews that they actually tend to be on the thin side and stay fit to look healthy instead. For them it's not a mtter of working to keep their weight down, but the opposite.

Great thread! I hope people will keep posting.

I always have a confusion about size and height... kinda stupid

Does being taller mean your dress size should be larger?

Let us use an example, a girl 5'4 size US4 versus a girl 5'8 size US4, both has medium frame, 25% body fat, and young. Is the 5'4 girl larger than the 5'8 girl? Does extra bones take more size?

Couture_Tribe, I don't think there's really a way to know just going by that info. Whatever muscle mass they're each carrying would be a big factor too. The whole 'big-boned' thing is a bit of a myth.

I disagree. When i had to get my heart checked, I was told my ribs were so close togeather, they had difficulty sensing my heart. I have a30 inch back---- despite being about 6ft. that is small boned.

I cannot stress how a good bra can eliminate alot of work when it comes to dressing to flatter our curvy selves. I use to wear minimizers so i can wear those cute tops, but minimizers made me look bigger.

^ I have never worn one as I have never felt that minimizing was a goal  but I have noticed on other people that they just make them look ... odd. Mashed. I think good support is all anyone needs.

lately i have had a more positive attitude. I found a great combo. A bright. festive mens sweater with these royal purple shorts. I wear a belt to cinch my waist, and lanvin-esque, black, platform heeled, ankle boots. I figure i could wear tights or leggings if its cold.

and i agree--minimizers are awful. supposedly they cause decreased firmness with time. (saggy breasts)

Bra Fitting

I really need to do a bra fitting. Is it possible to do it yourself? I sew so I have tape measures. Or do I need to have a "pro"?

Do places like Bloomingdales do them or am I better off going to a boutique?

I go to a boutique & recommend that. They do free alterations on the spot too ... The service is also great, you don't have to look for anything yourself, they do all that. And you just pay MSRP for standard brands, so why not get all the bells & whistles :flower:

Apropos of not much, I just happened to remember something & thought I would complain about it here :innocent:There's a woman who works in this dept of our primo Nordstrom's who wears my size. She immediately grabs everything pretty in "our" size for herself so that only ugly ones are left. How annoying is that??? :yuk:

Thanks fashionista! Ill check Yelp for some local places. Its about time I had a fitting - It normally takes 2 hours for me to find a bra that fits.

There was another thread about clothes looking better on you when you're smaller, and I was reminded of this time I went shopping with my sister. She was previously bigger than me, then lost a significant amount of weight so that we now wore the same size. We'd gone shopping and she'd bought a couple dresses, and I asked if I could try one of them on when we got home--I was just curious, I hardly ever wear dresses. (Scaasi, btw.) When I did, I looked much better in it than she did because I had curves. Boy, was she mad  Some designers *do* make their clothes to flatter a woman's body. I haven't worn him lately, but I've previously been really impressed with Michael Kors' fit. Last I knew anyway, he uses three different true-to-life fit models, and drapes in the actual target fabric, no matter how expensive it is. All that work really shows when you put it on.

that is why I hate wearing dresses. I am a thin person (bmi 17) and I would love to wear a dress, but all dresses look like a sack on me. to wear dresses you need curves IMO

^ Either that or a designer whose work is meant for your body type  Like Proenza Schouler should work for you ...

if you want bras on the cheaper side that actually look good and fit a big BOSOM, try frederick's. sounds tacky but most of my every day bras are from there and i'm a double D.

and elle mcpherson is grrrreat but pricey!
