The Curvy Thread

I agree--this is not a bizarre size--it's average or a bit less. I have honestly always had a relatively hard time finding clothes, though, not so much because of size, but because so many are just bland, boring, same old same old. (Although when I was a 2/4, the smallest size often wasn't small enough.) I want clothes that are interesting, not just a fig leaf equivalent. And of course matters are further complicated when you grow up and are no longer shaped like a human clothes hanger. The other thing I've noticed ... no matter what size I am, that size is very often sold out. We should have a new Murphy's law for this

Thank God for Lycra, though ... that's something that wasn't in circulation when I started buying clothes, and it's a wonderful thing for curves.

Really? That is strange...I am a size 8/10 and I have been told I look good in almost anything I wear...I always look better than 95% of the people I am w/or see on the street...but I am also quite tall...around 5'8...so that could be why...

i think curvy looks wonderful. i am a uk size 8-10, which i think is us4? i am more like larger on top and small on bottom...it's weird. i have long legs for my height and a short torso. not really curvy. jealous because all the curvy girls look best in fitted clothes.

Hey there! i am really short -4ft 11 and I'm topheavy. I usually wear 10-12 uk size on top and 8-10 bottom. I've always had a problem with shirts and tops cos I don't know what really suits me.I've always had a big waist (30 inches) and a protruding tummy. Longtops really drag me down and make me look shorter. My legs and thighs are ok so I never had probs with trousers or skirts. I've been going jogging for the past two years and that has only served to make me lose more weight bottom-wise.

Whilst I take a UK size 6 and an American size 0, my stats are 30-24-33 and I require a 30D bra, which actually makes me quite a curvy girl!

The worst problem I find is wearing clothing designed to be etheral and romantic, as my bust to waist ratio usually spoils this affect and skips straight to sl*tty.

Another issue I have is high-necked garments, which is rather irritating considering the number of pretty shift dresses and smocks available in the high street right now!

u lucky--i thin i may have a 30 inch back--- but 32 bras are hard to find in the states--in brit sizes i am a 32dd---impossible to find in america.

Seriously?!

I'm not lucky at all, 30Ds are impossible to find, unless youre willing to wear some hideous beige creation only available in specialist stores, so I often find myself in 32C instead, giving me a kind of shapeless effect on the bust. But I knew if I wasn't complaining about that, I'd only be complaining about something else!

I'm 20 , 5'11 and lost about 4 stone over 6 months ago , then put some weight back on because being under 10 stone didn't suit me at all. I'm quite perplexed though because it seems I now have "curves" or at least some shape. I'm 36 , 27 , 38.5 and what shape is that anyway , I think I'm more of a pearshape. And I'm finding it just as frustrating buying clothes as I did when I weighed more , I have to buy sizes to fit my chest rather than my waist. I was wondering do people ever buy clothes and have them altered ?

ApertureRomance you nearly have the same measurements as me! Except my hips are bigger. I find when I'm buying fitted shirts I have to wear a larger size to fit my chest and my broad shoulders. The strange thing though is that they fit in the front but the back of the shirt looks like a smock - its that loose. I think that's because clothes seem to be made for people who have no waists. I'm planning to put darts in the back of them so they fit better.

I don't view my measurements as a bad thing and I hope you don't either ! It's just frustrating and I'm glad someone else can share that frustration. For example my boyfriend bought me a VWestwood jumper for christmas which is lovely but I can't wear it because it fits me on the hips but is really baggy around my waist and it's only a medium it's not a huge size :S I think I might enquire about as to getting some darts put in , I studied textiles and did well but I don't trust myself haha.

I have the same problem with pretty much all of my tops as well. I don't know if it's my posture, or that anything that fits my chest is so large that it poofs in the back.

About bra shopping for folks who are well-endowed but have a small band size: I know it's a pain in the butt to buy stuff online since one is never really sure what size the garment is, but I've had a lot of luck shopping at Figleaves. They have a very wide range of sizes (both band and cup). Not everything fits perfectly, but their customer service is pretty great.

i found the biggest obstacle about dressing a curvy form is understanding all those doo-dads aren't necessary. a woman with an eye-catching figure can pull off a simple but tailored bodice sheath... a more boyish figure would have a much harder time---that is where all the layering, extra jewelry---and other distractions come in. look at the oscar style of nicole kidman vs. halle berry. is more nicole fashion forward or is she distracting spectators from noticing she's lacking everything that halle has?

i think if you havea naturally curvy build it will be hard to work it off--it has to do with your bone structure... look at jlo--she works out constantly--as does jessica biel, halle berry, hilary swank--but all are curvy

I've started doing pilates , it's really just my stomach I want to tone up but thankyou !

i must say wrap-dresses. the accenturate the great things of the female body (imo). also a-ine skirts and dresses, v-neck tops and a great fitted trench coat

That's the weird thing I look terrible in wrap dresses , however v-necks I love hehe.

what size would a Uk 12 be? I have these jeans from french connection but their are from the uk and im wondering what size it would be in comparison to american sizing.
