The Film Lovers Thread!

Speaking of Scorsese...I recently saw Infernal Affairs. The remake was The Departed, have to say I liked Infernal Affairs better. To me the acting is on par better, then the Hollywood cast could ever wish of replicating. :innocent: Although I thought Jack and Leo were great. ^_^

^I haven't seen Infernal Affairs, but I thought the acting in The Departed was phenomenal. Well, actually the only one I can remember very clearly is Leo; I do think his acting hit the big time with that movie though. It was his deepest performance and he finally seemed to have dropped those little actor-ly things he did in every.single.role before that.

I loved Leo in The Departed. I always felt he got a lot of flack about being a pretty boy, especially after doing Titanic. It's always been awkward admitting I like him. I seriously think he has talent.

As for his "actor-ly" things he did-everyone has them. Some are just more noticible than others. It's almost unavoidable. Even Daniel Day Lewis does certain things with his face that are in other movies. I couldn't even imagine having to drop those little things that aren't even noticable on a daily basis-that's why I think actors should be allowed to watch dailys and the best directors are the ones who aren't scared to tell their actors that they're doing something they shouldn't.

In other news, I finally say "Atonement" after not seeing it all when it was in limited release in theatres. I enjoyed it but some parts left me feeling a bit empty, if that makes any sense. I think it's because the book was written in third person pov, with different perspectives. A lot more is said about the characters and their motivations and feelings in the book. You get inside Cecila's head (a little anyway), Briony's, Robbie's, and even the girls' mother and Paul Marshall. Of course, it's understandable-if something with that many perspectives gets made into a film, a screenwriter and director would have to pick a story and kind of go with it.

I think comparing the book and film of Atonement has made reading the novel of an adapted film a requisite for me. [SPOILER ALERT] When I read the book, I thought that Briony did, indeed, visit Cecilia and Robbie at their apartment. When I watched the film, I was confused to whether they changed that part or not, but I was heartbroken.

I could totally see why it got snubbed come Oscar time despite of or because of all the buzz. The film was definitely a little too self-aware (if that makes sense), I got a sense of literary extravagance, probably caused by the approach to the story. Esp. the slow-motion flashbacks. It certainly wasn't what I was expecting. I know what you mean by not noticing it if we didn't watch the book, Kawari. But all the flashbacks and different point of views were interesting to contrast with how it was told in the book.

The fact that I chose to spoil the film myself in anticipation of the release by choosing to watch that long steadycam take of Dunkirk on the small video screen that is youtube definitely took away from the emotion of experiencing it in theaters. But, I started bawling during the close-up of Robbie when he advances toward the dead school children. It definitely got to me. And the score, the score! I need to get my hands on it.

The film wasn't necessarily a letdown, far from it.... It just won't go down as any of my favorites.

And as someone mentioned, that new film that Joe Wright has coming out, with Jamie Foxx, does seem like a disappointment. It's called The Soloist, according to IMDB:
A schizophrenic, homeless musician from Skid Row, Los Angeles dreams of playing at Walt Disney Concert Hall.

It does seem a little too biopic-y. I'm sick of all the 3-part-structured films where we follow (1) childhood struggles, (2) drugs or disease, (3) fulfillment of dreams with the help of a loved one.

And speaking of disappointments.... The Savages anyone? I had high hopes for this movie after listening to an interview with the director and reading an interview with Laura Linney. Philip Seymour Hoffman and Laura Linney (whom I both adore) play siblings who have to care for their dying father, it's both a bit of comedy and drama.

The Departed was amazing! Great performances all around. It made feel like I was watching an Al Pacino or Robert De Niro film during the height of their careers. As if I was witnessing another classic, but this time I'm there during the release. I have yet to see Internal Affairs, so I can't make any comparisons.

Me too. ^_^ And, to clarify, I agree that all actors do have little traits that appear in most of their roles, but with Leo I felt that it was too easy to see the wheels turning; it was clear he was acting and he stood outside of his roles (although I think he was pretty phenomenal in Catch Me If You Can, if you can look past the glossy finish they put on that obliterated his work... :ermm:). I think those acting habits are fine as long as they aren't too noticeable or they make the actor less believable in the role. I do actually love picking out the traits of each actor; they all have 'em.:p

LoveMyBoots, you must by the Atonement Soundtrack!! I bought it awhile ago and it is amazing. They way Dario used the typewriter as a part of the music is great and creative. I loved all of it and I listen to it when I study.

As far as the film goes, I actually really love the first "act" that takes place over one day. Amazing to watch and I got to see all the characters and how they interact with each other. Robbie's act was good too, but Briony's last one was kind of abrupt and rushed. They took so much time with the first two acts but the last part of the film (starting with the London Hospital scenes) was way too rushed and I wish they'd taken more time with it.

cestmagique-yea everyone has those little quirks when they act. My friends and I were talking about those Harry Potter kids earlier and whether or not they would be successful, creatively anyway, with later roles. They've played the same roles for years and will they be able to pull away from that? They've got a head start already, as the trio have done roles outside the film. But still....plus Emma Watson eyebrows just distract me.
And even if they don't have "acting" quirks, there's usually something about an actor/actress that makes them almost too memorable as a person rather than a performer. God knows I love him, but sometimes Marlon Brando's voice distracts me. It's so distinctive.

QUESTION: i've been wanting to see this movie forever but I can't remember the name of it....what is the movie this image is from? the girl is sooooooo stylish!

Has anyone here seen In Bruges? I loved it! The dialogue was so funny, and it was beautifully shot ^_^

Ohy I have grown to LOVE Leo again.:heart: I was totally obsessed with him in Titanic, and then the backlash began. Needless to say he's won my heart again. (Not that he cares.)

And that picture is from Clean (great movie), pretty sure. Maggie Cheung gorgeous, gorgeous woman. And talented too, a rare combination.

Oh and I adored Atonement! The book for me though is by far superior to the movie. It's just one of my favs of all time. Read it already about seven times, and my signature it's a quote from the book!

Yeah, it was very funny. Not utterly brilliant but really entertaining. And Colin Farrell giving a reminder that he can actually act.

"They're filming midgets!" The look on his face - sort of a childlike wonder - is fantastic.

Did it make you want to visit Bruges?

^Definitely. I loved the part where he tells the *large* American tourists not to go up the narrow, winding stairs.

Yeah and then at the end they are told the tower is closed because someone had a heart attack up there.

I didn't get to see In Bruges-it was only in my theatre for two weeks. That sucks....

I just watched Little Children and I feel like I would like the book more than the film.

I did it the other way round and must say I much preferred the book........not that they did a bad job with the movie and I thought Kate Winslet and Patrick Wilson perfectly conveyed the disillusionment of their characters. Hers boring unhappiness and his extreme lack of achievement and inferiority.
Also in the movie Jenifer Connelly's character although mainly passive anyway, barely registers.
