The Film Lovers Thread!

I just watched The Passion of Jean of Arc on youtube, aside from the twenties knuckle-biting, the acting is truly astounding.
The direction is also remarkable - standing on the cross formed by the light through the window was truly a shock of realisation done in actions.
A truly stunning piece of film.

wow, i would never have thought that its on youtube! That's great, art to the masses!!! :)

i just watched V for Vendetta at first i wasnt sure if id like it but i stuck with it and wow all i have to say is natalie portman really made that movie. she was so captivating and really showed how great of an actress she is!

I caught The Secret last night on TV (starring David Duchovny and Olivia Thirlby).
I was weirded out first by the plot (mother dies and her soul enters her daughter's body) but it turned out to be a real nice poignant film.

It's funny, I think the opposite. Her accent was insufferable and she tends to rely too much on the pouty, tears streaming, baby faced thing too much, like the only reason people respond to her acting is because of her beauty.

^ I agree. I didn't like her performance and I didn't really like the movie.

^^ Me neither.......I think I just didn't get what they were aiming to achieve:unsure: the movie was a mish mash of different themes that didn't match up for me. I do know a lot of people who really rate it though.

Just watched Ben Affleck's directorial debut Gone Baby Gone, and a very impressive piece of film making it is:woot:
A gritty and smart thriller, with a remarkable script and fantastic cast.
Very thought provoking and ultimately cannot decide whether the central character did the right thing or not.
Because of the difficult subject matter, it is really tough to put oneself in his shoes.
Casey Affleck is nothing short of miraculous in this role, surely after this and his Oscar nomination for Jesse James he will step out of his brothers shadow.
But the stand out in an amazing cast is without doubt Amy Ryan who in an Oscar nominated turn is mesmerising as the junkie mother who's daughter has gone missing.
After this I am eagerly awaiting Ben Affleck's next movie as director.

I am currently obsessed with vintage Faye Dunaway movies...in the past few months I have seen Chinatown, Eyes of Laura Mars, Bonnie & Clyde, Network and last night I watched The Thomas Crown Affair.

She was amazing, a real icon...it's a shame she has faded so much over the years. Honestly though, the 70's was the best period for films, truly.

BEAU TRAVAIL! FTW
if any of you know what im talking about. i give you mad props cuz that movie is the sHIEEET!!!

has anyone seen Il y a longtemps que je t'aime (i've loved you so long) with kristin scott thomas? i just saw it 2 nights ago.. wow, beautiful film. so well done.

Me too, I love Faye Dunaway.. such a good actress and a beautiful woman. Did you see, The Champ? Fay was also good in the 80's movie, Barfly together with Mickey Rourke (one of my favorites movies at that time).

I haven't seen it yet but i really want to!

i'm going to bump it up on my netflix queue right now :shifty:

Gattaca, with Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman & Jude Law.

Watched it during AP Biology after the AP exams... I love the soundtrack and this movie is just thought provoking and for some reason makes me emotional. Probably the only sci-film I ever liked.

La Vie en Rose / La môme

Has anyone seen La Vie en Rose / La môme?

I just saw it last night and was very impressed. Occasionally, moments of the film were a bit lost in translation, (since it is a French film, and not in my mother tongue), but I still thoroughly liked it, and besides, if dialogue is to be lost in translation, at least it's French, which I like to just shut my eyes and listen to. I adore the sound of the French language.

Marion Cotillard definitely earned her best actress Oscar, as Édith, and the cinematography, sets, and costumes were all so beautiful, and atmospheric, at times, it nearly hurt to look (in the best of ways). The music, of course, was stirring, as well, I can't stop listening to "Non, je ne regrette rien".

If anyone has seen it, what did you think? :flower:

^ I've seen it a number of times because I love the music.. I thought the movie was excellent.. Marion Cotillard was superb, she really captivated me on screen, and her singing was excellent. It was much better than I thought it would be when I initially thought about watching it! :D

Wait, that Marion singing throughout the entire film? I thought they just had her lip sync to Edith's voice from recordings. But if not, than she does a very impressive impersonation of Edith's singing voice, because I downloaded some of Edith's songs after seeing the film, and Marion sounds very much like her then! :woot: ^_^

Though, I just looked up the film's soundtrack. It only credits Marion for singing one piece from the film, "Frou Frou". There's also two tracks by an actress named Jil Aigrot whose film credit is "(singing voice) Edith Piaf", but the rest of songs are said to be sung by Edith Piaf herself.

So, did Marion only do one of songs, in the film, or are these credits wrong?

^no, you're right, it was edith's voice..

Chrissy, we seem to have similar taste in films.. any suggestions? :flower:

i saw 9 songs the other night... controversial film directed by michael winterbottom (who also did A Mighty Heart.. very different, though, so don't take anything from that).. it was beautifully shot, i thought, and very tastefully done.. i know many were outraged but i'm not one of them.. and i can be sensitive to the way sex is portrayed in the media in general, but i thought this was very well done and very thoughtful actually.

i'm going to see Away we go tonight, directed by sam mendes. will report back!

I saw Eyes Wide Shut last night. Something about that movie had me so mesmerized, I don't know. I guess it was Kubrick's directing? The movie also gave me a haunting effect, I wasn't sure whether to be afraid or turned on by all the stuff going on in that house...

Be careful of the rabbit hole. There is a lot more to that movie than you may suspect.
