The New Gothic / Neogoth

These pictures are from a Marie Claire ed photographed by Paolo Roversi in 1990. Even though they were taken 18 years ago, it all feels very contemporary and imo fits into this thread.

I think you are right, its kinda an oxymoron to think of goth and mainstream fashion in the same sentence. It's sort of a collective movement of defiance against mainstream fashion. I think for me as a designer, the inspiration of goth is more about how to break rules and be creative. I am not sure if my designs are really all that goth, but they are as different from mainstream as is goth.

well just rationally and anthropologically speaking, i think this is just happening because these designers that are doing it all are really young and probably were a part of the goth subculture or at least fundamentally influenced by it firsthand

im totally digging it though, i cant wait to see how it develops

I think the definition you use is more punk than goth really, where punk is anti-fashion, goth is very much a fashion-thing - a shared aesthetics - you get the picture ;)

you guys are in the wrong thread...

this is NOT about the 'goths'...like the kids you see in the mall..
it is about gothic influences...
as in turn of the century literature, architecture...etc....

*please see the beginning of this thread for more references and clarifications..

exactly! I havent posted before here despite my love for gothic, but since I read the previous comments I thought you were missunderstanding the idea.

maybe, It´s more appropiate to use the word "romantics"(some known examples: Goethe, Chopin, Lord Byron)

I think goth or neogoth, something along those lines, is more fitting. Gothic style doesn't always contain romantic elements. It can be tacky and harsh and sloppy, it can be anything. I love an elegant, understated gothic influence the most, but why insist on sanitizing the entire style? I'm humored by the idea that someday a fashion designer will be bold enough to reference Hot Topic/mallgoth style. Say what you will about it, but it takes balls to live in a small town in the middle of nowhere and go out dressed like that.

I think this collection comes close to the Hot Topic reference. The makeup and hair is so teenage goth angst, and the outfits are sort of hipster-goth; just trendy enough for mainstream taste. And there's a bit of grunge, punk and Stevie Nicks thrown in for good measure. I love it.:woot:

^agree with you that that's no real goth... i dont see the connexion between goth and grunge...

The cool thing about the term "neo goth" is that it is open for new definitions. Why not mix 10% goth with a little grunge or whatever? In the context of fashion in a conservative small town setting, you usually do find subdued influences which have as much contrast in a generic suburban shopping mall as pure Goth does in a big city environment.

Here's a shot of me in a small town of about 200 people. (it was halloween though) :)

I agree. Goth or neo-goth means different things to different people. Its aesthetic boundaries are not as defined as punk or grunge, and therefore it lends itself to many interpretations and hybridations. Goth has always contained a mishmash of influences, and if you look at just the subculture, it even did so in the early Batcave years. (The Batcave club is considered by some to be the "birthplace" of the gothic subculture.)
