The Official Harry Potter Thread

I knew Captain America would do well. I'm not surprised.
And I'm pretty sure Cowboys & Aliens will make some money this weekend as well.

As for HP, I think this last one attracted a lot of people who haven't seen the previous films...weirdly enough.
All 3 times I saw it, I heard people whispering around me explaining the plot to their friends/family. :)

ITV just aired a special on the top 50 movie moments! I only caught the last bit of the special but it totally made me cry.
Arriving at Hogwarts by boat and the first time everyone sees the castle was voted #1.

^Yeah I saw something online about it, but I don't get ITV in the U.S. :(

Couple more BTS pics

Also, a new article about all the moolah the film is making worldwide.
Around-the-World Roundup: 'Potter' Still Magic Overseas
by Ray Subers
July 26, 2011

After destroying the foreign opening record last weekend, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 tumbled 62 percent in its second weekend, but that still translated to a massive $120.2 million estimated haul. In second, Transformers: Dark of the Moon's record-breaking debut in China helped it reach a handful of significant milestones and pulled it ever closer to the coveted $1 billion worldwide mark.

Deathly Hallows Part 2 remained No. 1 in all of its major markets, according to distributor Warner Bros. The United Kingdom was once again its top territory with $13.7 million for an impressive $70.6 million total. It also added $13.7 million in Germany, $12.1 million in France, $8.5 million in Japan and $8.4 million in Australia. Potter's overseas total reached $559 million, which made it the second highest-grossing movie of the year behind Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

Potter's worldwide total grew to an enormous $832.5 million. It reached the $700 million mark in its tenth day in theaters and passed $800 million on its 12th day, both of which obliterated the previous speed records held by On Stranger Tides (16 days to $700 million) and Avatar (19 days to $800 million). It's already passed Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban in both foreign and worldwide grosses and appears poised to eclipse Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone's $974.8 million in a week or so to become the top-grossing entry in the series. With China slated for Aug. 4, Deathly Hallows Part 2 is well-positioned to contest The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King's $1.12 billion total to become the highest-grossing non-James Cameron movie ever worldwide.

13 New facts on Harry Potter costumes, makeup, film sets in Deathly Hallows revealed

1. Bellatrix Lestrange in the Great Hall - One of the first ever sets created for the Harry Potter films, the Great Hall is, as the name would suggest, pretty huge. It could fit 22 double-decker buses in and took over 90 tonnes of plaster to complete, as well as the handiwork of 30 men over 18 weeks. The tables and benches were made specifically for the film. The tables stretch a whopping 121 metres, with double that from the benches. Over the past seven years, the actors have added their own graffiti to the furniture -- much encouraged by set designer Stuart Craig!

2. Every wand seen in any of the Harry Potter franchise has been created on-site -- including the 60 to 70 Daniel Radcliffe has worn out during the last seven films. Just like in the books, no two wands are alike, not even those of identical twins Fred and George Weasley. Although Radcliffe has been through a few, most of the wands have remained the same throughout the films, staying he same throughout the films, staying a consistent 13-15 inches (33-38 cm) long, like in the books. This means the characters have grown into their wands over years of filming. Dumbledore's wand has also stayed the same, although its elaborate design was imagined before the film company -- or the rest of the world -- knew of its significance as the Elder Wand.

3. Scenes in Hogwarts' Great Hall - Over 600 school uniforms have been created for Harry Potter. The battle scenes in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows have been the ones with the largest number of cast and extras to dress -- the finale saw 400 Death Eaters and Snatchers join 400 teachers and Hogwarts pupils in the Great Hall.

4. The Hogwarts Express is actually somewhat of a misnomer. In railway speak, the name of the train which makes the ritual journeys to school every September 1 is the 'Hogwarts Castle'. The Hogwarts Express is the name of the service route. The train engine measures just under 4 metres high and 2.7 metres wide, was built in 1937 and was brought in from Carnforth in Cumbria. There are four carriages which date back to the 1950s attached.

5. Pictured are just some of the 210,000 coins made for the Gringotts bank scene in the final two films alone. Other one-of-a-kind artefacts in the book which have been recreated on screen include Salazar Slytherin's locket, of which 40 versions were made to accomodate Harry and Ron's attempts to destroy it.

6. Harry Potter's famous face - Harry Potter's identifying scar has been applied by makeup teams an approximate 5,800 times. While Radcliffe makes up a meaty 2,000 times of that application, the rest have been on the foreheads of stunt doubles and film doubles, who all wear the scar. Although Radcliffe's favourite prop is his glasses, he has been through 160 pairs of them during the shooting of the franchise!, many of which do not feature glass as this reflected the cameras too often.

7. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Over 25,000 items of clothing have been used in the Harry Potter franchise.

8. The Hog's Head Tavern - The pub owned by Dumbledore's brother Aberforth in the village of Hogsmeade is home to another animatronic in the film. The hog's head inside the tavern is a full-size silicon-skinned animatronic which was operated through the wall by technicians. Created as an alternative to three computer-generated wolf heads, which director David Yates originally wanted, the hog's head took a month to complete. Every hair on it has been individually punched in by hand.

9. Gringotts Dragon - 200 mythical creatures have been created for the Harry Potter film series, including this dragon. Aragog the acromantula (giant spider) which featured in the second film, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, had a leg span of 5.48 metres. 250 non-robotic animals have been used in the films, the largest being a hippo and the smallest a centipede.

10. Shell Cottage - Bill and Fleur's home, where Harry, Ron and Hermione shelter in the final film, was 90 percent completed at Leavesden studios and then moved to Fresh Water West in Wales. It was transported by a tractor along the beach before being carried up the dunes by the crew. It's public location makes it the most photographed set by fans. 4,500 individual giant scallop shells were needed for the roof of the cottage, and even the surrounding dunes were not except from Hollywood styling: hundreds of tufts of grass were individually dressed into the sand. The set resisted the coastal winds thanks to over 10.9 tonnes of water used to weigh it down.

11. Snape and Voldemort meet at the boat house - This is just one of the 588 sets which have been created for the Harry Potter films -- the products of 58 full time art department staff. Many of the sets have been created in the old aerodrome-turned-magic land that is Leavesden Studios. The 80 hectare studio houses over a 46,500 square metres of stages. The sets on them include a broom rig for flying -- the brooms in the Harry Potter films are made out of aircraft-grade titanium.

12. Costumes and masks - While these are the transfigured army of statues to fight against Voldemort at Hogwarts, they are not the only characters who wear masks in the film. Indeed, it is the masks of the Death Eaters which demanded most skill from the crew. Created in conjunction with the art department and the prop makers, all the Death Eater masks were sculpted by the creature effects department from a cold alginate life cast of the actors' faces which took 2.5 minutes to set. The prop team then finished these to create an individual pewter design.

13. Ron and Hermione amongst the rubble - This scene showcases just some of the 5 29-tonne trucks' worth of polystyrene rubble used in the Deathly Hallows films.

ITV just aired a television special called "50 Greatest Harry Potter moments," which featured new interviews from the cast and JK Rowling.

^Thanks for posting!
I think my favourite scene might actually be Buckbeak's flight. I think Dan's acting in that scene is one of the best we've ever seen from him. It's also one of my favourite soundtracks. I cried when they showed Sirius's death but I don't know why because I've seen it plenty of times before without crying (although it always did break my heart they way he called Harry "James").

I'm re-reading the first book right now and I keep tearing up in the most random places!

What a great countdown,really.
I got teared up at them end, nostalgic. It might sound stupid but I am know suffering the post-potter depression, it saddens me to know that i wont be as excited as I have been for a movie never again, not like this. I feel like the ending of harry Potter is also the ending of the little girl inside me, the series has meant so much to me, its almost ridiculous.

Jason Isaacs

Two new posters:

Also, as of Thursday, Deathly Hallows: Part 2 has brought in $296.5 million domestically, and $926.5 million worldwide - 19th overall for all-time. The film has broken yet another record: "Fastest film to reach the 900 million mark." Avatar was the current record holder at 18 days. DH2 got there in 15 days.

'Harry Potter' Hits $900M Worldwide in Record Time

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 crossed the $900 million worldwide mark on Wednesday, its 15th day in release. That made Harry's last stand the fastest movie ever to reach that milestone, breaking Avatar's 18-day record.
On Wednesday, Deathly Hallows Part 2 brought in $24.7 million worldwide ($5.2 million from domestic and $19.5 million from foreign), lifting its total to $906.8 million. It climbed to 19th place on the all-time chart, jumping past Goblet of Fire's $896.9 million final haul.
The first Harry Potter, Sorcerer's Stone, still ranks as the top-grossing with $974.8 million, while only Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Transformers: Dark of the Moon slot higher for 2011 with $1.03 billion and $926.1 million, respectively. Deathly Hallows Part 2 is on course to join the $1 billion club by early next week.
Domestic alone, Deathly Hallows Part 2's business was down 58 percent from last Wednesday to $5.2 million, falling harder but grossing more than the previous July Potters, Half-Blood Prince and Order of the Phoenix, at the same point. With a $291.7 million tally in 13 days, it also edged out the final gross of Goblet of Fire ($290 million) and will eclipse Order of the Phoenix and Deathly Hallows Part 1 on Thursday (though it will still rank last in estimated attendance).
Captain America: The First Avenger topped the Wednesday domestic box office with $5.8 million. With an $86.4 million tally in six days, the Marvel Comics adaptation extended its lead over the summer's other superhero movies through day six. Thor had $80.7 million by day six, and its latest total was $180.3 million.

^That's AWESOME! :D Potter fans are so creative!

Deathly Hallows is currently a little over 50 million away from crossing the billion dollar mark. :D

no, and it's a little annoying that after that disaster of the first day they still don't seem to have fixed their servers since it constantly says "due to overwhelming demand etc..."

also...should i refresh pottermore or wait for that invitation email first?

Pottermore doesn't open until July 31st though, right? It's still July 30th where I am.

On a lighter note, here's some news:

'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2' Hits $1 Billion at Global Box Office

It's the first in the franchise to pass the milestone, doing so only two weeks after its release.

In a fitting farewell to one of the most magical film series in Hollywood history, Warner Bros.’ Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 is the first film in the franchise to reach the $1 billion mark worldwide.

Deathly Hallows 2 will cross the milestone on Saturday, having grossed $296 million domestically and $630 million overseas through Thursday for a global total of $926 million. Another blockbuster weekend at the multiplex is forecast, allowing the film to easily pass the vaunted $1 billion mark.

The movie becomes only the 9th title in history to gross north of $1 billion worldwide, a club that includes Warners’ The Dark Knight ($1 billion), Disney’s Alice in Wonderland ($1.02 billion) and Disney’s 2011 summer tentpole Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides ($1.03 billion).

Deathly Hallows 2, benefiting from being released in 3D, is racing past the milestone in about two weeks, a remarkable achievement. Until now, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone overseas) was the top grossing pic in the franchise, having grossed $974.8 million globally in 2001-02.

The Harry Potter franchise has always been immensely successful internationally, with every title in the series earning substantially more offshore. So far, 68 percent of Deathly Hallows Part 2’s gross has been earned at the international box office, fueled by standout performances in the U.K., Japan, Australia and Germany.

By the end of this weekend, Deathly Hallows Part 2 should surpass Sorcerer’s Stone's domestic gross of $317 million, the best in the series. It also will have surpassed the $659 million earned last year internationally by Deathly Hallows Part 1.

Only one film has ever grossed north of $2 billion, and that’s James Cameron’s Avatar ($2.8 billion).
