Surprised I don't like St John, or surprised that's all they've got?

I live in St. Louis Mo and both Saks and Neiman Marcus here- even in their regular sizes are more toward classic peices.

But next time I go to chicago, I will look around there!

Surprised that's all they've got ;) Though St John claims to be getting cooler  The Salon Z here isn't that classic ... I used to help a friend shop there (pre-divorce), and we found some cool things there ...

luxx, your website is fantastic. i have to say lately ive been having some problems finding some great pants for fall. i like that stores like gap make bigger sizes, but there is no way im buying pants without trying them on.

my problem is that im bigger on bottom than on top and i want something to flatter. i basicallly do not want to try skinny, but maybe straight leg and definately wide leg. but its so hard to find not only something good, but something that fits into my budget

UGH, this is going to be a rant post, but maybe someone will understand

OK, so I'm plus-sized and pretty short (5'3"), and my biggest issue is that I'm not busty. Most tops for plus-sized women are made with large waists, busts and hips. I have larger arms, so I have to find clothes that fit those first. But when I do, there's always tons of excess fabric in the bust and waist area. I wish that someone could make plus-sized clothes with larger arms and hips, but a small bust and waist because I hate the way that the fabric bunches up in the back! A lot of girls have this problem and they safety pin their shirts, but I think that it looks SOOOO tacky!

Same with jeans. I find jeans that fit my butt and hips, but they're huge in the waist, thighs and legs.

I'm thinking of going to a tailor, but I'm really poor, so does anyone know how much these alterations would cost? Or, does anyone have any ideas or know of any brands that could help?

Thanks :D :flower:

^^
Although I am 5'9," I will try to answer some of your questions.

If you aren't that busty, perhaps you might want to do straight-size tops? I wear a lot of straight size L/XL (today, I have a J. Crew tissue T shirt on).

And if you can afford it, alterations work wonders. My waist is about 10-12 inches smaller than my hips, so I have to hit the tailors. Prices do vary, ask around in your city.

xmodel, you might try clipping the top in the back? Or having ties attached at the sides to achieve the same effect? You could perhaps sew a gathering/elastic thing at the back ...

I have always put quality over quantity ... you may need to just factor tailoring into your budget :flower:

Sigh, I wish I could find a short chubby to emulate!

Chandra Wilson of Grey's Anatomy. She is 5 feet tall...

I def. agree on Chandra. She looked amazing last night. Her entire outfit was age and figure appropriate, and it really lengthened her. I wouldn't have known she was that short if you hadn't of mentioned it classic.

Thanks for the suggestions guys! I think I'm just gonna have to suck it up and go to a tailor. Honestly, I usually compensate by wearing a C cup molded bra even though I'm very much a small B. It helps balance things out, but it's also odd, and I think that it's false advertising.

And yeah classic, I wear straight sizes in t-shirts and tank tops, but anything with sleeves, I have to go with a larger size, even if there is a yard of extra fabric.

Also, I was thinking about this, and although I can't find any easily linkable pics, check WireImage or Getty Images for Marisa Jaret Winokur of "Hairspray" fame. She is 4 feet 11 inches or 5 feet, somewhere in that range. I've seen red carpet and occasion photos of her, and she has a bit of funk and twinkle in her dress.

I like that dress on Chandra Wilson as well. Simple style with a little bias cut action around the middle in a strong color. Chandra looks held in in the right places without looking like she's trying to hide her body. Very well done!

anyone know of any plus brands/brands that have plus sizes that cater to girls who have hips/bum/thighs, but a small waist??

all of my jeans, if they fit me in the thighs, they're baggy/long in the crotch and way too loose in the waist.
old navy is notorious for that, i have a pair i liked, but they just don't work right...
right now, i'm sticking with lane bryant's jeans (which have the long/baggy crotch), but i want something different.

i hate how plus sized clothes are just big all over...like every plus sized woman is completely proportionate!! i can't cuff my jeans, cos the bottom leg part is too wide it looks like gauchos or something, lol....and the thighs fit, but the waist is too big that my belt gathers it and just looks sloppy

..my waist is currently about 14..but i wear a 20 because of my bum/thighs/hips (yeah, i'm VERY disproportionate...) lol, and i wear a large or medium in shirts...it's awful.
i just want to find jeans that work for me...:(

dont worry, im the same way to a certain extent. i am definately bigger on bottom than on top. i guess you could try tailoring the waist down if you want to put in the extra money. it reminds me of what they say on what not to wear, you fit the largest part of your body and you get the rest tailored down

ive never worn lane bryants, i have some z cavarricis from torrid that i like. maybe try there, they have a lot of different brands

Again, your tailor will be your best friend, if you can find one who works on denim. I've never gotten any jeans altered. As for brands, I bought a couple of Seven7s from LB before they went off-kilter. I am older than most, and prefer a dark trouser-cut with a slight bootleg.

I found this on ebay. Does it look too matronly/boring for a wedding?

ebay.com

I like the dress above. It's classic and could really be snazzed up with jewelery and good shoes. The dress looks like one I've seen recently on Nordsrtom.com in their plus-size department, dress section. I was on the website yesterday and they had several good looking dress styles in plus sizes.

Also, for those of you looking for trouser style denim, I found a styles on the talbots website. The pair comes in a wide variety of sized including womens-petite. I bought a pair though I needed a size larger than what I normally wear. They are a dark wash.

texastess- that dress won't look too matronly or boring if you wear a killer pair of heels

I think the model actually looks pretty young and spunky (probably partially attributed to her hairstyle too..)

^ It's the beach wedding, but I have since found out it is by the beach - on an overlook. So, I won't have to trek through sand.
