You know what though, it must take some damn guts to wear a dress like that surrounded by the people she's surrounded by (Marjorie) and kudos to her for that. It's not even like she's in regular society with size 0,2,4,6,8,10,12,14, etc. etc. The majority of her social outings she is surrounded by 0-2 max. And to not only be bigger than that, but plus size and still not shrink is incredibly difficult.

From what I've read about Marjorie, she truly does not give a about being surrounded by very thin women. First of all, she's wealthy, seems well-liked and is what I'd call a "friend of the house" to many designers. But she was also quoted as saying if you're going to get bigger, have fun with it. In that sense, she reminds me of Queen Latifah. Queen, particularly for her public appearances, does take chances with color and such.

^ I agree, she seems to have accepted herself as she is long ago. I love how one of the women in the picture is trying not to make her guy look short, but Marjorie is standing tall with her usual gorgeous smile on her face.

On the plus side of the dress above, the bustline up looks great.

sorry - I wasn't implying that she cared desperately about what these people thought of her - I'm sure she doesn't though I don't know anything about her. I'm just saying - it still takes effort. Being a strong person isn't something that happens over night, and everyone has weak moments. To be a different person in a crowd isn't always easy, not matter how strong you are and by extending this i was saying i appreciate her choices in fashion, she's not willing to shy away from figure hugging dresses.

You know Antigone i was talking with a friend of mine the other day ( who has a wonderful style btw ) and she's the skinny type with a lot of curly hairs,and what she said really clicked on me,she said that as long as you feel comfortable and trust yourself you can wear practically everything,i guess is true

That is so true. I just arrived here in America three months ago, and where I came from I am huge at size 14 - Asian women are typically waifish and petite. I was probably one of the very few big women back home who dared wear mini skirts and such.

What's interesting about your comment is that Marina Rinaldi (a MaxMara brand that runs from sizes 10-24) seems to be fairly available in Japan. Since many Asian women are waifish and petite, I was surprised that MR sells there.

I know this because I've bought several MR pieces that were on clearance in Loehmann's and some of their tags have indicated the pieces were for Japanese sale. I know MR is a bit conservative for many posters here, but I'm in my 40s and don't mind sartorial conservatism.

Jordin does look sleek; I'd love to see more of her outfit as it looks like a great cut for her. I have to really admire Nikki Blonsky;she's very confident, poised and not at all trying to hide her size. Being a short/plus myself I know how difficult it is to look good in off the peg clothes and she does very well. I too am really looking forward to seeing her at the Globes.

I've been working hard these last three months to take off a few pounds. It's been work! But I've dropped to a 16/misses extra large on top and a size 14 on the bottom. Still plus size but able to fit in a few more regular lines which is fun. I'm concentrating on purchasing a few qualilty basics to add more refinement to my look. So far the pre-holiday sales have been good to me. I found a black wool slightly-above-the skirt by DKNY that can be styled for weekend, work or dress. I also found a single-breasted trench in a traditional "putty" by AK Anne Klein. The jacket has a very clean look with hidden pockets and buttons which give it verticlal lines; very important for a shorty.

i'm a plus-sized gal myself (uk 16-20/us 14-18, depending on the clothes) and i am glad i found this thread! i was starting to think that i am the only plus-sized woman on here, haha.just wanted to pop in here and say hello.

i'm currently looking for a dress to wear on new year's eve. i already have two dresses by torrid, but after posting photos of them on another comm asking for fashion advice, i was kind of thrown off because people kept saying how "horrible" and "homecoming 2-years-ago" they were. it was kind of a surprise to me because i like to think that i have a pretty decent sense of fashion but now i'm completely unsure about them and am on the lookout for something new. i went to the mall today, and spent two hours at h&m trying on dresses.

i found one that actually was flattering, despite it being sequined all over:

since i am short (5'4") it was a little below the knee for me, which is the perfect length, but unfortunately, they only had a size 44 (US 14) left and it was a little TOO snug-fitting for my liking. i'm going to another h&m tomorrow, hoping to find the dress a size larger there, but i have little hope seeing as it is already sold out online and in some of their stores.

Good strategy. Weather permitting, I'm going to start walking every other day. I have no weight-loss goal per se because I'm not one who denies myself food and I enjoy a smart cocktail. But I have a couple of sorority sisters/friends who have taken up walking and have lost weight.

well, unfortunately, a lot of popular brands (and just about all designer brands) stop at 12. So 14 is plus sized. I am about a 14-16 on bottom too.

and summer, i really like that dress. I hope you find it, it looks fun

Just as a gentle clarification: some designer RTW and bridge brands do go past size 12, but those are mainly for people in my age group -- 35 and up. I'm speaking of Oscar, Blass, Herrera, Rucci and some of the European brands. For instance, I have a Chanel blouse that's well past size 46 that I picked up at a consigner last year.

It is true that very few of what I'd call "contemporary" brands, those targeted at younger women, go past 12. That is definitely an untapped market.

Summer, I hope you can find a dress without problems. I usually like H&M - they've got their BiB-range with a lot of good everyday pieces but oddly enough not dresses.

And hello. I'm not quite sure what my sizes in in English/American sizes but usually I'm a 44/46 on top and a 42 on the bottom. I hope I can start working out more in the new year - I'm not good at dieting but I would really, really like to loose a bit of weight of my boobs - they don't look so good after two babies

Petite-plus is also an untapped market along with high fashion contemporary. Talbots is the only shop I'm aware of in the US which has a petite-plus line with sizes going up to US 24 (UK 26/28). I have purchased basic slacks from them because I can get the rise and length to fit but that's about it. I'd love to be able to purchase more exciting items that are better proportioned for me.

The only other petite plus I've seen is Jones New York, which is a basic, not a fashion brand, sort of on the lines of Talbots. INC Woman has a handful of plus-petite items, mainly their basic pants. It definitely is a less-tapped market when it comes to quality stuff.

LaurieAnn, congrats on the downsizing! It's rarely easy & you should be very proud.

I had a WTF moment @ the Las Vegas Outlets Monday afternoon. A pretty cowl-necked sweater @Neiman Marcus Last Call was talking to me, but unfortunately the largest they had in stock was a size 6. The WTF happened when I looked at the size tag on the garment: large/grande. I wish I could remember the designer. A 6 is a large now. That blew my mind.
